Curcumin-cisplatin radiation treatment: A manuscript technique in advertising radiation usefulness and also reducing negative effects.
PURPOSE Free radicals play an important role in the different complex course of carcinogenesis. Higher concentrations of reactive oxygen species are highly associated with the presence of tumors. The urinary bladder organ is also a target for many carcinogens. The major objective of this investigation was to measure the role of redox state or total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and antioxidant functions of vitamin E in patients with low-grade papillary cancer of the bladder (BC). METHODS The blood sample was used for measurement of the T-AOC by the Trolox-TAC assay kit. Thirty-five patients with BC and thirty-five healthy subjects that matched for age were entered in this study. The obtained data were analyzed using the Statistical Package (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA). The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS In healthy controls, the mean ± SD for T-AOC was 91.8 ± 16.6 (U/ml), that was significantly higher when compared to the mean value of 24.5 ± 28.9 (U/ml) in patients with BC (p = 0.00). The difference in concentration of T-AOC before and after prescription of vitamin E was encountered with a p value of 0.16. CONCLUSIONS By reference to the significant difference between T-AOC in patients and healthy controls, our results strongly suggest a low level of T-AOC in patients with BC. The obtained changes in T-AOC before and after management with vitamin E recommended additional consideration associates with different stages and grade of tumor in patients with BC.Overdrainage in upright position is one of the most prevalent issues in treating hydrocephalus with a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt. Anti-siphon devices (ASDs) are employed to reduce this problem. A novel microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based valve, termed Chronoflow device, aims to regulate CSF drainage indifferently of the body posture. With this study, the suitability of this MEMS-based valve is evaluated regarding its use for the treatment of hydrocephalus, particularly for the prevention of overdrainage and blockage. In total, four Chronoflow devices were tested. An established in-vitro hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test bed was used to investigate the valves regarding their pressure-flow characteristics, their behaviors towards CSF dynamics, and their capabilities to prevent CSF overdrainage in upright position. Additionally, a contamination test was conducted to evaluate the susceptibility of the device to blockage due to particles. All valves tested regulated the drainage rate at similar nominal flow regulation and prevent overdrainage in upright position. Specifically, their drainage behaviors during the posture changes are very effective. However, they also showed high hysteresis and sensitivity towards particle contamination, which resulted in initial increased and altering nominal flows after many test iterations. This result suggests that the MEMS design presented lacks robustness. Yet, an upstream filter and specific coatings on the fluid pathway may increase significantly its reliability.Circoviruses are small circular DNA viruses causing severe pig and poultry disease, recently identified in various bat species worldwide. We report the detection and full-genome molecular characterization of a novel bat-associated Circovirus identified in faecal samples of Miniopterus schreibersii bats (Schreiber's bent-winged bats) from Sardinia, Italy. Full-genomic sequencing revealed a new putative member of Circoviridae family, with a genome size of 2063 nt. this website Sequencing allowed the characterization of the two major ORFs, inversely arranged, encoding replicase and capsid proteins, as well as the finding of a polythymidine tract within the genome, and highlighted phylogenetic relationships of the novel virus. This is the first report of circovirus in European bats. Giving the high level of genetic diversity of bat circoviruses, it is paramount to further investigate the relationships between these viruses and bats.PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate stress shielding of anatomical tibial components (ATCs) in comparison to conventional symmetric tibial components (STCs) in Korean patients which may be related to medial tibial bone loss. METHOD 78 knees in 59 patients with ATCs (Persona™) and 74 knees in 58 patients with STCs (NexGen LPS-Flex™) were retrospectively reviewed. Radiographic parameters and clinical outcomes in both groups were compared. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for medial tibial bone loss. RESULTS Medial tibial bone loss was significantly greater in the ATC group (1.6 ± 1.3 mm) than in the STC group (0.4 ± 0.8 mm) (p  less then  0.001). The ATC group showed a shorter distance between the distal metal tip and anteromedial cortex and higher invading into the sclerotic bone lesion (ISBL) than the STC group (p = 0.034 and p = 0.044, respectively). Multiple logistic regression analysis suggested ATC, a shorter distance to the anteromedial cortex, and the presence of ISBL as risk factors for medial tibial bone loss. The odds ratios of medial tibial bone loss according to type of prosthesis, distance to anteromedial cortex, and presence of ISBL were 6.25 (range 2.86-13.63, p  less then  0.001), 0.69 (range 0.51-0.93, p = 0.015), and 3.79 (range 1.56-9.21, p = 0.003), respectively. Notwithstanding, there was no difference in clinical outcomes between the two groups. CONCLUSION In Korean patients, ATCs potentially causes greater medial tibial bone loss due to stress shielding than STCs. The design, however, does not yet appear to affect clinical outcomes at mid-term follow-up. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Retrospective cohort study, level III.Photochemical and oxidative damages in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells are key events in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and carotenoids are rich in retinal cells, and under oxidative stress leads to oxidation and release lipid mediators. We evaluated the impact of carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation on RPE cells under oxidative stress. ARPE-19 cells were exposed to H2O2 after pre-treatment with lutein, zeaxanthin, DHA, lutein + zeaxanthin or lutein + zeaxanthin with DHA. The data showed H2O2 reduced cell viability and DHA content, while promoted catalase activity and certain oxidized PUFA products. Treatment with DHA enhanced omega-3 PUFA enzymatic oxidation namely, anti-inflammatory mediators such as hydroxy-DHA, resolvins and neuroprotection compared to control; the effects were not influenced by the carotenoids. Omega-6 PUFA oxidation, namely pro-inflammatory HETE (5-, 9-, 12 and 20-HETE), and isoprostanes (5- and 15-F2t-IsoP and 4-F3t-IsoP) were reduced by lutein + zeaxanthin while the addition of DHA did not further reduce these effects.
