Despite increasing research on suicide, we continue to see rising rates, particularly among youth. In answering recent calls for critical suicidology and transdisciplinary approaches to research, I discuss expanding beyond the paradigmatic confines of suicidology by proposing two related approaches to improve our science intersectionality theory and socioecological theory. Following a discussion of social identity and its relation to suicide risk, I review the literature on these topics and highlight importance of paying attention to the unique experiences of youth through the study of intersectionality and using socioecological models in our research moving forward.Facing the truth of death in silence instead of fearing and denying it enables people to regain their freedom. This qualitative case study aimed to illuminate the meaning of a single person's experience of confronting death and living with cancer. The transcripts of unstructured interviews were analyzed using the hermeneutic phenomenological method. Data analysis led to extraction of four themes including "Confronting death, meeting nonbeing and longing for being", "Embracing existential loneliness, responsibility and freedom", "Taking over the mind, living mindfully, a meaningful life", and "Flourishing authentic self-love, moving in the path of caring and healing the self".Basing our argument on Terror Management Theory, we posit that retirement is an age-related transition, which could result in greater death saliency and anxiety, leading to increased depressive symptoms. An indirect-effect model was tested on a convenience sample of 574 Israeli Jewish older workers (mean age = 57), finding that the link between retirement anxiety and depressive symptoms is mediated through death anxiety. Anxious anticipation of retirement could imply that the individual perceives it as an "end," resulting in greater death saliency and death anxiety, which are related to poorer mental health. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Objective To investigate how change in nutritional status is associated with physical function and disability among community-dwelling older adults. Methods Baseline and 1-year follow-up data of 593 community-dwelling older adults were obtained from the Population Health Index survey in Singapore. The Mini Nutritional Assessment was used to assess nutritional status; the Late-Life Function and Disability Instrument was used to measure physical function and disability. Multivariate linear regression was applied to examine the association of change in nutritional status with physical function and disability. Results Compared to older adults with normal nutritional status at both baseline and 1-year follow-up, those who became undernourished or remained undernourished reported poorer physical function (B = -6.36 and -5.96, respectively; both P  less then  0.01), and had less frequent involvement (B = -3.95 and -2.84, respectively; both P  less then  0.01) and more limitation in performing life tasks (B = -13.24 and -16.02, respectively; both P  less then  0.01) at 1-year follow-up. However, older adults with improved nutritional status did not differ in physical function and frequency of involvement in life tasks compared to those with normal nutrition. Conclusion Undernutrition is associated with poorer physical function and disability in community-dwelling older adults regardless of whether it developed or was persistent over one year. Improving nutritional status could be an effective strategy to improve physical function in older adults.Cashew nut shells (CNS) is already used in the energy matrix of some industries. However, it is necessary to know the harmful health effects generated by exposure to pollutants of its combustion, especially in the workers exposed to industrial pollutants. In addition, it is known that the incidence of asthma grows among workers in industries, and due to its previously reported biological effects of anethole, these will also be objects of the present study. We used 64 Balb/C mice, randomly divided into eight groups. Groups were sensitized and challenged with saline or ovalbumin, then subjected to intranasal instillation of 30 µg PM4.0 (occupational exposure) from the combustion of CNS or saline, and then were subsequently treated with oral anethole 300 mg/kg or 0.1% Tween 80. Our results serve as a starting point for the development of public policies for the prevention of diseases in workers that are exposed to the pollutants coming from industries. Objective Nowadays, retinal microvascular structures can be investigated using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). selleck products We aimed to evaluate the probable vascular changes in the foveal and peripapillary regions of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).Methods A total of 20 patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and 24 healthy controls were recruited in this study. All participants' superficial and deeper retinal and peripapillary layers were evaluated using OCTA after a total ophthalmologic examination. Results In the superficial plexus, the whole image (49.53 ± 3.9% and 51.83 ± 2.1%, p = 0.009), superior hemisphere (49.44 ± 4.11% and 51.63 ± 2.3%, p = 0.018), inferior hemisphere (49.75 ± 3.9% and 52.03 ± 2.2%, p = 0.012), parafoveal (51.87 ± 3.9% and 53.08 ± 3.46%, p = 0.048) and perifoveal (50.41 ± 3.86% and 52.76 ± 2.1%, p = 0.007) vascular densities were statistically significant lesser in patients with RRMS than in controls. In the optic disc OCTA parameters, the vessel density of the inferior (50.15 ± 6.99% and 53.04 ± 3.63% p = 0.043) and temporal sector (48.09 ± 5.47% and 50.85 ± 5.24%, p = 0.045) were statistically significantly lesser in patients with RRMS than in controls. Conclusion The reductions in vessel density of the retinal or peripapillary area of patients with RRMS shown in this study should be investigated further to determine whether it is a secondary lesion to optic neuritis (ON) or a primary vasculopathic condition of MS.Glycoconjugate vaccines use protein carriers to improve the immune response to polysaccharide antigens. The protein component allows the vaccine to interact with T cells, providing a stronger and longer-lasting immune response than a polysaccharide interacting with B cells alone. Whilst in theory the mere presence of a protein component in a vaccine should be sufficient to improve vaccine efficacy, the extent of improvement varies. In the present review, a comparison of the performances of vaccines developed with and without a protein carrier are presented. The usefulness of analytical tools for macromolecular integrity assays, in particular nuclear magnetic resonance, circular dichroism, analytical ultracentrifugation and SEC coupled to multi-angle light scattering (MALS) is indicated. Although we focus mainly on bacterial capsular polysaccharide-protein vaccines, some consideration is also given to research on experimental cancer vaccines using zwitterionic polysaccharides which, unusually for polysaccharides, are able to invoke T-cell responses and have been used in the development of potential all-polysaccharide-based cancer vaccines.
