Overall, the diagnostic accuracy was 82% (95%CI 79-85) with the NICE system and 81% (95%CI 78-84) with the Kudo one (ρ = 0.78). The drastic changes during the COVID-19 pandemic may have anegative impact on the psychological wellbeing of children and adolescents.
COPSY is the first national, representative German study to examine mental health and quality of life of children and adolescents during the pandemic. Results are compared with data of the representative longitudinal BELLA study conducted before the pandemic.
Internationally established instruments for measuring health-related quality of life and mental health (including anxiety and depressive symptoms) were administered to n = 1586 parents with 7‑ to 17-year-old children and adolescents, of whom n = 1040 11- to 17-year-olds also provided self-reports, from 26 May to 10 June 2020. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and bivariate tests.
Seventy-one percent of the children and adolescents and 75% of the parents felt burdened by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to the time before the pandemic, the children and adolescents reported alower health-related quality of life, the percentage of children and adolescents with mental health problems almost doubled, and their health behavior worsened. Socially disadvantaged children felt particularly burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Two-thirds of the parents would like to receive support in coping with their child during the pandemic.

Schools, doctors, and society are called to react by providing low-threshold and target-group-specific prevention and mental health promotion programs.Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have a great regenerative and immunomodulatory potential that was successfully tested in numerous pre-clinical and clinical studies of various degenerative, hematological and inflammatory disorders. Over the last few decades, substantial immunoregulatory effects of MSC treatment were widely observed in different experimental models of asthma. Therefore, it is tempting to speculate that stem cell-based treatment could become an attractive means to better suppress asthmatic airway inflammation, especially in subjects resistant to currently available anti-inflammatory therapies. In this review, we discuss mechanisms accounting for potent immunosuppressive properties of MSCs and the rationale for their use in asthma. We describe in detail an intriguing interplay between MSCs and other crucial players in the immune system as well as lung microenvironment. Finally, we reveal the potential of MSCs in maintaining airway epithelial integrity and alleviating lung remodeling.Infectious mastitis is the major cause of early weaning, depriving infants of breastfeeding benefits. It is associated with an inflammatory condition of the breast and lowered resistance to infection. Drug administration during lactation often being contra-indicated, it is therefore important to consider safe therapeutic alternatives to antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapies, such as probiotics. In this study, we investigated in vitro the probiotic potential of thirteen Lacticaseibacillus (formerly Lactobacillus) rhamnosus strains isolated from the gut microbiota of breastfed healthy infants. Strains were assessed for their β-hemolytic activity, their resistance to antibiotics, and their antimicrobial activities against strains of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, most often involved in women mastitis. Their immunomodulating abilities were also studied using in vitro stimulation of human immune cells. None of the strains exhibited β-hemolytic activity, and all of them were sensitive to ampicillin, penicily or in a mixture, can be considered as a probiotic candidate for the management of infectious mastitis during lactation.The aim was to determine whether probiotics-feeding can affect the expression and localization of avian beta defensins (AvBDs) and proinflammatory cytokines in response to Salmonella minnesota lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the gastrointestinal tract. One-day-old male Chunky broiler chicks were fed with or without 0.4% probiotics for 7 days (P-group and non-P-group, respectively). Then, they were orally challenged with no LPS (0-LPS), 1 µg LPS (1-LPS), or 100 µg LPS (100-LPS) (n = 5, each), in experiment 1, and with no LPS and 1 µg LPS (n = 6, each) in experiment 2. Five hours after LPS challenge, the proventriculi and ceca were collected. A total of seven and eight AvBDs were identified in proventriculus and cecum, respectively. The density of ir-AvBD12 in the surface epithelium of proventriculus increased in the P-group in response to 1-LPS and 100-LPS stimulation. In experiment 1, the expression of two AvBDs in the proventriculus and six AvBDs in the cecum of 1-LPS chicks was higher in P-group than in the non-P-group. Results of experiment 2 showed similar tendency to experiment 1. These results suggest that probiotics-feeding may enhance the immunodefense system mediated by AvBDs but not by cytokine, against infection by Gram-negative bacteria.Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is an extremely uncommon, neurocutaneous disease, with a classical triad of ocular, skin lesions and central nervous system anomalies. We here report a case of ECCL in a newborn baby, characterized with naevus psiloliparus, choristoma, lipodermoids, cervical subcutaneous soft tissue mass, lowset ear, porencephalic cyst, polymicrogyria, arachnoid cyst, leptomeningeal angiomatosis and spinal lipomas. We here stress on the importance of early diagnosis to prevent misdiagnosis and employ a multidisciplinary approach in the management of these patients.
In its first 3 years, the Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric End Stage Renal Disease (SCOPE) Collaborative demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the likelihood of compliance with a standardized follow-up care bundle and a significant reduction in peritonitis. We sought to determine if compliance with care bundles and low peritonitis rates could be sustained in centers continuously participating for 84 months.
Centers that participated from collaborative launch through the 84-month study period and provided pre-launch peritonitis rates were included. Children on maintenance peritoneal dialysis were eligible for enrollment. Changes in bundle compliance were assessed using a logistic regression model or a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Changes in average annualized peritonitis rates over time were modeled using GLMMs.
Nineteen centers contributed 1055 patients with 1268 catheters and 17,247 follow-up encounters. The likelihood of follow-up compliance increased significantly over the study period (OR 1.05 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 1.07; p < 0.001). Centers achieved ≥ 80% follow-up bundle compliance by 28 months and maintained a mean compliance of 84% between 28 and 84 months post-launch. Average monthly peritonitis rates decreased from 0.53 (95% CI 0.37, 0.70) infections per patient-year pre-launch to 0.30 (95% CI 0.23, 0.43) at 84 months post-launch, p < 0.001.

Young children starting kidney replacement therapy (KRT) suffer high disease burden with unique impacts on growth and development, timing of transplantation and long-term survival. Contemporary long-term outcome data and how these relate to patient characteristics are necessary for shared decision-making with families, to identify modifiable risk factors and inform future research.
We examined outcomes of all children ≤ 5 years enrolled in the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry, commencing KRT 1980-2017. Primary outcomes were patient and graft survival. Final height attained was also examined. We used generalized additive modelling to investigate the relationship between age and graft loss over time post-transplant.
In total, 388 children were included, of whom 322 (83%) received a kidney transplant. Cumulative 1-, 5- and 10-year patient survival probabilities were 93%, 86% and 83%, respectively. Death censored graft survival at 1, 5 and 10 years was 93%, 87% and 77%, respectively. Most children were at least 10 kg at transplantation (n = 302; 96%). A non-linear relationship between age at transplantation and graft loss was observed, dependent on time post-transplant, with increased risk of graft loss among youngest recipients both initially following transplantation and subsequently during adolescence. Graft and patient survival have improved in recent era.
Young children commencing KRT have good long-term survival and graft outcomes. Early graft loss is no reason to postpone transplantation beyond 10 kg, and among even the youngest recipients, late graft loss risk in adolescence remains one of the greatest barriers to improving long-term outcomes.

The intensification in the dynamism and uncertainty of coastal processes and change in the past few decades have led researchers and coastal managers to explore new tools with the capability of undertaking a rapid assessment of coastal resources at a relatively lower cost compared with the conventional in situ data collection. The latest advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms and sensor technologies have made them useful environmental remote sensing tools due to the high temporal and spatial resolution and relatively inexpensive operating costs. This study reviews literature that explored UAV applications in five different areas of the coastal zone comprising the intertidal, coastal organisms and habitats, marine litter, coastal zone disaster management, and coastal zone land use and land cover mapping. The review provides evidence of the potentials and effectiveness of UAVs for coastal zone management (CZM).
