As the pandemic developed, increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients with neurological manifestations were reported, strongly suggesting a causal relationship. Indeed, direct invasion of SARS-CoV-2 viral particles into the brain can occur through the cribriform plate via olfactory nerves, passage through a damaged blood-brain-barrier, or via haematogenic infiltration of infected leukocytes. Neurological complications range from potentially fatal encephalopathy and stroke, to the onset of headaches and dizziness, which despite their apparent innocuous presentation may still imply a more sinister pathology. Here, we summarize the most recent knowledge on the neurological presentations typically being associated with COVID-19, whilst providing potential pathophysiological mechanisms. The latter are centered upon hypoxic brain injury, generation of a cytokine storm with attendant immune-mediated damage, and a prothrombotic state. A better understanding of both the neuroinvasive properties of SARS-CoV-2 and the neurological complications of COVID-19 will be important to improve patient outcomes.Investigation of electrochemical and spectroscopic characteristics of anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug provides important information related to the efficacy of the drug in relation with its interaction with several important biomolecules. In the present investigation we have developed an electrochemical and spectroscopic method for the detection of anti-HIV drug Darunavir (DRV) using the carbon paste as the working electrode. The analytical method has generated the detection limit of 1.86 µM (S/N = 3). The electrochemical investigations have also been carried out for the exploration of the interaction of DRV with double stranded deoxyribose nucleic acid DNA (dsDNA) and human serum albumin (HSA). Electrochemical investigations were supported from the spectroscopic measurements in evaluating the interaction. The results obtained from voltammetric and spectroscopic experiments shows strong interaction between the drug and the macromolecules. It has been observed that DRV forms strong complexes with HSA and dsDNA with the formation constants of 2.7 × 104 and 4.2 × 104 M-1 respectively. The formation constants are varied with the pH of the solution, which leads to the assertion of the mechanism of the interaction between DRV and dsDNA.Acetamiprid (ACE) belongs to the group of neonicotinoid pesticides, which have become the most widely utilised pesticides around the world in the last two decades. The ability of Phanerochaete sordida YK-624 to degrade ACE under ligninolytic conditions has been demonstrated; however, the functional genes involved in ACE degradation have not been fully elucidated. In the present study, the differentially expressed genes of P. sordida YK-624 under ACE-degrading conditions and in the absence of ACE were elucidated by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). Based on the gene ontology enrichment results, the cell wall and cell membrane were significantly affected under ACE-degrading conditions. This result suggested that intracellular degradation of ACE might be mediated by this fungus. In addition, genes in metabolic pathways were the most enriched upregulated differentially expressed genes according to the KEGG pathway analysis. Eleven differentially expressed genes characterised as cytochrome P450s were upregulated, and these genes were determined to be particularly important for ACE degradation by P. sordida YK-624 under ligninolytic conditions.The emergence and worldwide spread of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pose a threat to human health. While bacteriophages are recognized as an effective alternative to treat infections caused by drug resistant pathogens, some bacteriophages in particular the temperate bacteriophage may also influence the virulence of the host bacteria in distinct ways. In this study, we isolated a bacteriophage vB_Saus_PHB21 from an epidermal sample of Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) using an MRSA strain SA14 as the indicator. Our following laboratory tests and whole genome sequencing analyses revealed that vB_Saus_PHB21 was a temperate bacteriophage belonging to the Siphoviridae family, and this bacteriophage did not contain any virulence genes. However, the integration of PHB21 genome into the host MRSA increased the bacterial capacities of cell adhesion, anti-phagocytosis, and biofilm formation. Challenge of the lysogenic strain (SA14+) caused severe mortalities in both Galleria mellonella and mouse models. Mice challenged with SA14+ showed more serious organ lesions and produced higher inflammatory cytokines (IL-8, IFN-γ and TNF-α) compared to those challenged with SA14. In mechanism, we found the integration of PHB21 genome caused the upregulated expression of many genes encoding products involved in bacterial biofilm formation, adherence to host cells, anti-phagocytosis, and virulence. This study may provide novel knowledge of "bacteria-phage-interactions" in MRSA.In this study, a series of Mg-modified γ-Al2O3 sorbents have been introduced to simultaneously remove HCl and HF in a low-temperature environment. These sorbents were prepared by impregnation, and the effects of Mg loading amount and calcination temperature on the performance of the sorbent were investigated. The optimal sorbent (modified by 15 wt% Mg and calcined at 400℃, Mg15/Al2O3-400) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of all the sorbents tested, 37.89 mg(HF)•gsorbent-1 and 34.54 mg(HCl)•gsorbent-1, respectively. Taking into account an excellent HF(HCl) capacity of the Mg15/Al2O3-400, these sorbents are very promising HF(HCl)sorbents usable in a low-temperature environment. The role of MgO loaded on γ-Al2O3 was investigated by Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) method, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG). The results revealed that MgO acted as a 'leading role' to promote the adsorption activity of the sorbents. BET analysis demonstrated that the Mg modification process did not seriously change the pore type of the γ-Al2O3. CO2-TPD results revealed that the calcination temperature will significantly affect the number and strength of the basic sites on the surface of the sorbent. In addition, XRD and XPS analysis indicated that the consumption of MgO and the accumulation of reaction products on the surface and pores are the main reasons for the deactivation of the sorbent.
Studies have shown that inflammation plays a key role in etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, human studies which have evaluated association between PD and serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) have reported conflicting results. In this study, serum and striatum levels of these cytokines were evaluated in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) animal model of PD.

The neurotoxin of 6-OHDA was injected into medial forebrain bundle of right hemisphere and behavioral tests were carried out to eight weeks thereafter to evaluate severity of PD and its progress. Blood was collected before the toxin and in second and eight weeks after that. Survival of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons in substantia nigra was assessed by immunohistochemistry. TNF-α and IL-1β levels were determined using ELISA kits.

Severity of behavioral symptoms was gradually increased in 6-OHDA-treated rats. They showed a decrease in serum TNF-α level in the eight week and increase in IL-1β both in the second and eight weeks. They were divided into two subgroups, symptomatic and asymptomatic with severe and moderate degrees in DAergic neuronal death. Significant decrease in serum TNF-α was only observed in the symptomatic subgroup but IL-1β increased in both subgroups. Also, striatal levels of both cytokines were higher in the lesioned hemisphere.

To identify predictors of functional outcome in patients with an anterior circulation large-vessel occlusion (LVO) in a setting of long transfer distances.

Outcomes of LVO patients transferred for an endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) from North Karelia Central Hospital to Kuopio University Hospital between January 2018 and October 2019 were analysed using retrospective patient chart review.

Three months after the stroke, modified Rankin Scale (mRS) was 0-2 in 20 of the 41 transferred patients. They were younger (66.7 vs. 74.2years, p =0.032) and had less severe stroke symptoms (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, NIHSS, 11.5 vs. 16.5, p =0.029) than those with mRS 3-6. They also had the occlusion less often in M1 and more often in M2. EVT was performed in 32 patients (no differences between those treated with EVT and those not treated with EVT). Their median age was 73.0years (interquartile range 65.5, 79.8; range 32-86; 25% over 80), mean NIHSS score 14.0 (standard deviation 5.9) and mRS eventually 0-2 in 44%. Only NIHSS was associated with mRS (OR=1.16; p =0.016) in the EVT-treated patients. mRS was 0 in 38% of all EVT-treated octogenarians but 4-6 in 83% of those with an internal carotid artery and/or M1 occlusion.
