However, the trade-off phenomenon in permeability and selectivity constrained the membranes' usage. Recent advances made in fabricating membranes, especially thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes using functionalized nanofillers, have high performance in water purification and desalination. In this review, state-of-the-art thin film composite (TFC) membranes in water purification and desalination along with their drawbacks are discussed. Bafilomycin A1 The urgent demands as an alternative of TFC membranes are highlighted for high-performance membranes. Then, the fabrication and development of high permeability and selectivity of TFN membranes are discussed. Thin film nanocomposite membranes manufactured using rational nanofillers are systematically summarized. Finally, the applications of TFN membranes in water purification and desalination are reported. This mini-review describes the recent developments in chiral trivalent europium (Eu(III)) complexes with effective CPL. CPL has many potential applications in security tags, lasers, and three-dimensional organic electroluminescence devices, which is one of the most intensely investigated topics in molecular luminophores. Eu(III) complexes have attracted considerable attention as effective CPL luminophores for the above-mentioned applications. In this review, recent studies on the Eu(III) CPL, including the steric (dimer, tetramer, aggregates, and coordination polymers) and electronic control (mononuclear) of Eu(III) complexes for the construction of a luminophore with effective CPL, are discussed. The characteristic CPL applications employing the chiral mononuclear Eu(III) complexes are also described. Chiral Eu(III) complexes with well-designed organic ligands can result in the establishment of new research areas in the fields of photochemistry and materials science. Insulin resistance, increased inflammation and oxidative stress are the major pathogenic mechanisms involved in obesity-associated co-morbid conditions. Major efforts to curb the rising tide of obesity, including lifestyle modifications, anti-obesity medications and surgical interventions have shown minimal success. Therefore, introducing new methods to combat obesity, diabetes and associated disorders are desperately needed. Stevia rebaudiana, a natural, non-caloric sweetener has generated significant interest in the scientific community due to its effects on glucose homeostasis, blood pressure and inflammation, all known consequences of obesity. In this review, we assess the effects of Stevia on these parameters in humans as well as in animal models, highlighting its potential role as an effective intervention for the major cardiovascular risk factors associated with obesity.Purpose Intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC), delivered directly to the globe via the internal carotid artery is now an established treatment for retinoblastoma. We report a case of anterior segment ischaemia following treatment with multiple intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) infusions. Observations A 5 month old female presented with bilateral retinoblastoma and was treated with 12 infusions of IAC. Her right eye was enucleated at diagnosis. After her seventh IAC treatment, she developed ipsilateral sixth and third cranial nerve palsies. After the twelfth IAC, she developed an area of conjunctival and scleral ischaemia between 12 and 3 o'clock meridians in her left eye. However, she maintained visual acuity of LogMAR 0.34. Conclusions and Importance The median number of IAC treatments in large studies is three. It is possible that repeated doses of IAC have an accumulative negative effect on the ocular blood supply, risking anterior segment and neurologic sequelae. This case highlights the significant challenge of balancing the salvage of eyes and vision with the potentially significant morbidity associated with IAC. © 2020 The Authors.Date (Phoenix dactylifera L.) seeds are seen as good drug to cure rheumatoid arthritis and asthma in Moroccan traditional medicine. The present research aimed to study the anti-inflammatory effect, of methanol extract of different date seed varieties using membrane stabilizing effect, nitric oxide radical scavenging activity, inhibition of protein denaturation, carrageenan-induced paw edema and croton oil induced ear edema. The polyphenolic profile was examined using HPLC-DAD. Rutin, quercetin, p-coumaric and caffeic acids were the main among the analysed phenolic compounds. Concerning the anti-inflammatory activity, the analysed date seed were significantly effective in scavenging nitric oxide free radical, in stabilisation of erythrocyte membrane and possessed a high anti denaturation effect. In agreement with this finding, date seed exhibited a profound ability to reduce paw and ear swelling induced by carrageenan and croton oil respectively. The biochemical parameters showed that date seed are able to reduce the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ERS) and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration in rats used in Carrageenan-induced paw edema model. The predominant phenolic compounds are the potential candidates that drive these activities and the differences observed among varieties are related to their chemical composition. These data suggest that date seeds can be explored as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. © 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.Arsenic (As) is naturally occurring toxic metalloid which is considered as a serious environmental and health concern. Red blood cells are the prime target for any toxicants as their population is higher in systemic circulation. High prevalence of anaemia too has been reported from arsenic contaminated area, suggesting possible linkage between arsenic and the damaging effects on RBCs. The exact mechanism for these effects is still not clear, however, oxidative/nitrosative stress might be one of the causative factors to play a key role. The present study was planned to evaluate the protective effects of a metal chelator, MiADMSA either alone or in combination with a natural antioxidant (gallic acid) for the reversal of arsenic induced oxidative damage in red blood cells. We collected rat RBCs and cultured them in appropriate medium. They were incubated with MiADMSA and gallic acid and then treated with sodium arsenite at 37 °C. Hemolysates were prepared and assayed for various biochemical parameters such as oxidative/nitrosative variables, osmotic fragility, acetylcholinesterase activity, and cellular metal accumulation. We found there was reversibility of oxidative/nitrosative stress variables, elevated cellular antioxidant power, and decreased osmotic fragility of red blood cells both in MiADMSA alone as well as in combination with gallic acid treated group compared with arsenic treated group. In conclusion, MiADMSA efficiently participated in the reversal of arsenic induced oxidative/nitrosative damage in red blood cells where as Gallic acid improved its reversal when given in combination with MiADMSA. © 2020 National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Raebareli. Background Self-care helps maintain health, prevents complications and improves the quality of life of patients living with heart failure (HF). Self-care is critical to HF management but has received limited attention in Nepal. Identification of the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with self-care is crucial to tailoring appropriate self-care programs to improve health outcomes including patients' quality of life. Aims The aims of this study were to describe self-care including the factors influencing self-care and the relationship between self-care and health-related quality of life in patients living with HF in Kathmandu, Nepal. Methods We used a cross-sectional observational study design to measure self-care maintenance, self-care management, and self-care confidence using the Nepali Self-Care of Heart Failure Index. To analyze data, we used descriptive statistics, bivariate associations and regression modeling. Results We recruited 221 patients with HF mean age 57.5 ± 15.76 years, 62% male. The results in this sample indicated poor self-care maintenance (38.5 ± 11.56), management (45.7 ± 15.14), and confidence (40.9 ± 16.31). Patients with higher education were associated with higher self-care maintenance and management. Living alone and a better New York Heart Association functional classification for HF were related to higher self-care confidence. Higher social support was associated with better self-care. Self-care confidence was an independent predictor of self-care maintenance, management and health-related quality of life on adjusted analyses. Conclusion Self-care was limited among patients living with HF in Nepal yet was associated with better quality of life. The study identified various sociodemographic and clinical factors related to self-care, which could be crucial while developing self-care interventions. © 2020 The Authors.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1016/j.heliyon.2019.e02412.]. © 2019 The Author(s).Jordan imports 94% of its oil and gas (fossil fuels) to meet its energy needs, leaving it vulnerable to variations in fuel price. Jordan's demand for energy is growing at a rate of 3% annually. In response, the government set a target of obtaining 10% of its energy needs from renewable energy resources by increasing electricity generation share from the present 1.13 GW-1.8 GW by 2020. The sources of generation include abundant solar, wind, and biomass resources, which also enhance economic growth and reduce pollution. This article analyzed the current energy situation in Jordan and assessed the available renewable energy resources potential for direct investments. The actual contribution of clean energy is still moderate at roughly 7% of total energy demand, despite the efforts placed on the development of alternative energy resources. The national electricity supply and demand are presented, and the government initiatives, financial incentives, and tax exemptions to encourage investments in clean energy are also discussed. The renewable energy policy generates future opportunities for investors with an ambitious $20 billion energy plans as does its strategy to improve energy efficiency. This article will benefit interested clean energy investors and developers and plans for 2,000 MW investments in wind and solar energy are ready for bidders. Such an endeavor and model will also benefit neighboring countries in the region. © 2020 The Author(s).Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a condition of neuropathic pain, which is characterized by significant autonomic and inflammatory features. CRPS occurs in patients who have limb surgery, limb fractures, or trauma. Many patients may have pain resolve within twelve months of the inciting incident; however, a small subset progresses to the chronic form. This transitional process often happens by changing from warm CRPS with dominant inflammatory phase to cold CRPS, in which autonomic characteristics or manifestations dominate. Several peripheral and central mechanisms are involved, which might vary among individuals over a period of time. Other contributors include peripheral and central sensitization, autonomic alterations, inflammatory and immune changes, neurochemical changes, and psychological and genetic factors. Although effective management of the chronic CRPS form is often challenging, there are a few high quality randomized controlled trials that support the efficacy of the most commonly used therapeutic approaches.
