Scientific electrophysiology in the optic neurological and retinal ganglion tissues.
Parents reported experiencing stigma and disempowerment within their networks, yet continued to embrace their valued parental identity and drew strength from involvement with self-advocacy organisations. The research informed arts-based performance pieces and resources aimed at training professionals and raising public awareness.Left main coronary artery atresia (LMCAA) is a rare congenital anomaly of the coronary artery that may have an unfavorable prognosis if left untreated. Surgical revascularization by either coronary artery bypass grafting or coronary reconstruction osteoplasty is unanimously recognized as the treatment of choice for this condition. Here, we first report a case of LMCAA treated with revascularization by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) through a retrograde approach. Intravascular ultrasound revealed an unusual coronary structure for the left main artery. PCI appears to be a feasible and effective alternative to surgery for the treatment of LMCAA, particularly if a minimally invasive method is desired.Anthropogenic climate change is expected to have major impacts on domesticated livestock, including increased heat stress in animals in both intensive and extensive livestock systems. We estimate the changes in the number of extreme heat stress days per year for animals raised outdoors that can be expected in the major domesticated animal species (cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, and pigs) across the globe during this century. We used the temperature humidity index as a proxy for heat stress, calculated using temperature and relative humidity data collated from an ensemble of CMIP6 climate model output for mid and end century. We estimate changes in the proportions of different livestock species that may be at increased risk of extreme heat stress under two contrasting greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Results are discussed in relation to changes in the suitability of different climate conditions for domesticated livestock during the current century. We find that by end century, extreme heat stress risk is projected to increase for all livestock species in many parts of the tropics and some of the temperate zones, and to become climatically more widespread, compared to 2000. NMS873 Although adaptation options exist for both intensive and extensive livestock production systems, the increasing pervasiveness of extreme heat stress risk in the future will seriously challenge the viability of outdoor livestock keeping, particularly in the lower latitudes in lower and middle-income countries where the costs of adaptation may be challenging to address.
Degenerative myelopathy (DM) in dogs shares similarities with superoxide dismutase 1-associated human amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Brain microstructural lesions are quantified using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in ALS patients.

Characterize brain neurodegenerative changes in DM-affected dogs using DTI.

Sixteen DM-affected and 8 control dogs.

Prospective observational study. Brain DTI was performed at baseline and every 3months on DM-affected dogs and compared to controls. Fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity were calculated on specified regions of interest. Gait scores (0, normal to 14, tetraplegia) were assigned at each scan. Diffusion tensor imaging values in DM-affected dogs were compared to controls, gait scores, and evaluated over time.

Mean age was 5.7 years (SD 3.2) in controls and 9.7 years (SD 1.4) in DM-affected dogs. In DM-affected dogs, mean baseline gait score was 4 (SD 1), and mean score change from baseline to last scan was 4.82 (SD 2.67). Nine dogs had ≤3 scans; 7 had >3 scans. Accounting for age, no differences in DTI indices were identified for any brain or proximal spinal cord regions between DM-affected dogs and controls (P > .05). Diffusion tensor imaging values poorly correlated with gait scores (R
< .2). No significant changes were identified in diffusion indices over time (P > .05).

Diffusion tensor imaging indices did not differentiate DM-affected from control dogs, detect longitudinal changes, or differentiate disease severity. Findings do not yet support brain DTI as an imaging biomarker.

The pond wolf spider (Pardosa pseudoannulata) is an important natural enemy of rice field pests. To facilitate large-scale gene functional research in this spider species and others, we developed an RNA interference (RNAi) method via ingestion of bacteria expressing dsRNA. The dsRNA targeting a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (cyp41g2) was expressed in Escherichia coli HT115 (DE3). And then the bacterial suspension was fed to 14-20 days old spiderlings. The mRNA abundance of the target gene was significantly reduced after 3-day's ingestion of bacteria expressing dsRNA, and between day 5 and 7, RNAi efficiency remained stable. Thus, we selected 5 days as the optimum interference time. Furthermore, the bacteria resuspension containing 20 ng/μl dsRNA was selected as the optimum concentration. To evaluate the applicability of this method, three other genes with different tissue expression pattern were also selected as targets. And the mRNA abundance of all the four target genes was significantly reduced with RNAi efficiency between 66.0% and up to 86.9%. The results demonstrated that the oral delivery of bacteria expressing dsRNA would be an effective RNAi method for the gene functional study in P. pseudoannulata.Mechanically programmable, reconfigurable micro/nanoscale materials that can dynamically change their mechanical properties or behaviors, or morph into distinct assemblies or swarms in response to stimuli have greatly piqued the interest of the science community due to their unprecedented potentials in both fundamental research and technological applications. To date, a variety of designs of hard and soft materials, as well as actuation schemes based on mechanisms including chemical reactions and magnetic, acoustic, optical, and electric stimuli, have been reported. Herein, state-of-the-art micro/nanostructures and operation schemes for multimodal reconfigurable micro/nanomachines and swarms, as well as potential new materials and working principles, challenges, and future perspectives are discussed. This brief review provides insights into the recent advances made by the Unity game engine into education and the ways that learning resources can be used to teach novice bioscience students to use the VR/AR affordances of the platform. We present our own practises for implementation of a novel gamification task for final-year bioscience students and reflect on the changes we have had to make in order to overcome challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The present study aimed to analyze the association between healthy sleep duration of children and the parental perception of the social/built environment.

A cross-sectional study was done and a sample of 8273 children (4183 females) aged 6-9 years was observed. Height (cm) and weight (Kg) were measured, and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Participants were classified as normal weight or overweight/obese. Sleep habits, sedentary behaviors (i.e., TV viewing) and environmental variables were assessed by questionnaire. Logistic regressions were used, with adjustments for age, sex, BMI, and sedentary time.

Children whose parents reported a positive perception of the built environment in the residential area were 1.21 times more likely to have regular sleep habits during weekdays. Furthermore, children whose parents reported a negative perception of the social environment and safety were 81% more likely to have irregular sleep habits during the weekdays.

The present study revealed a positive association between regular sleep during the weekdays and the parental perception of the social/built environment (land use and urban design).

Knowledge of the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of intracranial Coccidioides infection in dogs is essential for prompt diagnosis to limit disease-associated morbidity and death.

To describe the MRI appearance of intracranial coccidioidomycosis in dogs, identify associated clinical and clinicopathologic findings, and report outcomes of medical treatment.

Forty-five client-owned dogs with presumed intracranial Coccidioides infection.

Retrospective case series. Medical records and images were reviewed. Clinical history, examination findings, serology, imaging characteristics, treatment, and outcome were recorded. Included cases had an abnormal brain MRI and positive Coccidioides serology by agar-gel-immunodiffusion (AGID).

Median age was 7-years. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures were the most common presenting sign (25/45). Two lesion categories were identified a granulomatous form with 1 or more distinct, intra-axial, contrast-enhancing foci (37/45), and a second variation with diffuse, bilateral, symmetrical lesions of the caudate nuclei and frontal lobes (8/45). Serum IgG titers ranged from 11 to ≥ 1256; 2 dogs had positive IgM titers at 12. All dogs with follow-up serology (34/45) had a reduction in titer. Mean duration of follow-up was 22.4± 20.5months (median 16 months). Six dogs were lost to follow-up <1-year after diagnosis (median 9months). Five dogs were clinically well but had yet to be followed for >1-year. Of the remaining 34 dogs, 28 (82%) were alive ≥ 1-year after diagnosis. Thirteen of these dogs had follow-up times ≥ 2-years.

The prognosis for intracranial Coccidioides infection is generally more favorable with medical treatment than in earlier reports.

A comprehensive literature search was performed through MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus and Webscience. Only cohort studies examining semen parameters in workers or general populations exposed to pyrethroids or organophosphates were included. Ejaculate volume, sperm count, concentration, motility, viability, normal morphology and seminal pH alterations were pooled using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel Method with the random effect model and expressed as weighted mean difference, risk ratios, 95% confidence intervals and p-values. Seven cross-sectional studies regarding pyrethroids were included. Four of them were eligible for meta-analysis. The only parameter affected by pyrethroid exposure was normal sperm morphology (WMD-7,61%, 95%CI -11,92 to -3,30;p = 0,0,005). Nine studies were selected to evaluate the impact of organophosphates on semen parameters with six of them eligible for meta-analysis. A significant reduction was detected for the following ejaculate volume (WMD -0,47ml, 95%CI -0,69 to -0,25; p less then 0,0001), sperm count (WMD-40,03, 95%CI -66,81 to -13,25;p = 0,003), concentration (WMD-13,69 x10⁶/mL, 95%CI -23, 27 to-4,12;p = 0,005) and motility (WMD -5,70%, 95%CI -12,89 to 1,50;p = 0,12).
