This study employs a critical quantitative lens to model intersectionality in quantitative analysis and examine how inequities are perpetuated in U.S. schools. Using the U.S. sample from nationally representative PISA 2015 data, Latent Class Analysis was used to identify intersectional student background groups based on indicators of race/ethnicity, social class, immigration background, language spoken at home, and measures of cultural capital associated with cultural reproduction theory. A regression auxiliary model combined with latent class regression was then used to determine if intersectional group membership moderated the relationship between a covariate, gender, and two distal outcomes sense of belonging to school and opportunity to learn (OTL) inquiry-based science. Differences between intersectional background groups on the two distal outcomes were also examined. The findings from this study reinforced the use of LCA as a promising method for incorporating intersectionality frameworks in quantitative research designs. Six distinct intersectional background classes were identified and findings revealed evidence of a wealth gap between classes of similar affluency based on parent occupational status and education. In addition to this evidence of systemic inequality, significant gender disparities within classes were found for OTL and sense of belonging.
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the often-debated association between physical disorder and crime exists longitudinally and operates through a specific spatial process.

We combine four administrative and official databases to analyze patterns of crime occurring each month in New Orleans, LA, between 2012 and 2018at the block group level. We adopt a generalized additive model (GAM) framework to efficiently account for potential spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal autocorrelation to investigate this association.

The resident-driven self-report measure of physical disorder (i.e., 311 calls) consistently predicts neighborhood criminal activities in New Orleans. The spatial effects of 311 calls in adjacent areas on drug violations, property crime, and violence in a focal neighborhood are also observed. In contrast, official reports of physical disorder, captured with code violation, is either weakly related to crime or lacking an empirical relationship.

Overall, our findings suggest that the association between physical disorder and neighborhood crimes is robust over time. In addition, this association is conditioned by how physical disorder is operationalized, with dimensions such as residential report and official report of physical disorder playing a unique, and occasionally important role in understanding overall patterns of neighborhood criminal activity.

In this paper, we test these hypotheses by examining the long-term labor market returns to track choice in upper secondary education in Denmark using an instrumental variable approach that relies on random variation in school peers' educational decisions. We report two main findings. First, VET diverts students on the margin to the academic track away from higher-status but not higher-paying occupations. Second, VET protects students on the margin to leaving school from risks of non-employment and unskilled work, also leading to higher earnings. These results suggest that in countries with a highly compressed wage structure, a strong VET system benefits students unlikely to continue to college, while causing few adverse consequences for students on the margin to choosing academic education.Crime rates respond to age shifts in the population and to changes in current social conditions. A flexible generalization of the characteristic solution to the age-period-cohort problem shows that they also respond to differences in birth cohorts. I used age-arrest data for a representative panel of 16 states to estimate annual differences in cohort effects, then regressed them on 21 covariates spanning a wide range of social, economic, and environmental conditions. Cohort effects explained both the 1960-1990 crime increase and the post-1990 crime drop about as effectively as current conditions; the covariates explained about half of these effects. Cohort criminality was primarily affected by three conditions relative cohort size; the prevalence of crime during childhood; and the capacity of families and neighborhoods to socialize children. Because all of these characteristics are trending in favorable directions, cohort effects - and crime rates - will probably continue to decline.Access to affordable childcare is crucial to mothers' employment. Yet, childcare costs and access to Head Start, childcare subsidies, and state-funded preschool vary dramatically across U.S. states. Using data from the 2016 American Community Survey five-year estimates, we apply hierarchical logistic regression models to show mothers are more likely to work in states with inexpensive childcare, higher Head Start enrollment and childcare subsidy participation, and increased availability of state-funded preschool. mTOR inhibitor Childcare subsidy access is associated with higher maternal employment amongst those with lower levels of educational attainment, whereas state-funded preschool is associated with higher employment primarily among the college educated. Additionally, our analysis revealed that Head Start has a stronger association with maternal employment in states where childcare costs are high, reducing the negative relationship of employment with expensive childcare. As national discussions continue to center on the importance of childcare, our research adds evidence that public programs support maternal employment through reducing out-of-pocket childcare costs.Cohabitation has become a normative experience for American young adults and a common setting for childbearing in recent decades. However, the high dissolution rate of cohabitation exposes young adults to the potential stress of intimate relationship dissolution and single parenthood during early adulthood. Drawing on data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, we apply growth curve models to analyze how cohabitation dissolution associates with trajectories of depressive symptoms and binge drinking behaviors for young adults (aged 17 to 35). We investigate how the presence of children moderates this association for men and women. We find that cohabitation dissolution is associated with increased depressive symptoms for both men and women. However, cohabitation dissolution is only positively associated with binge drinking behaviors for men, and a significant gender difference is observed. The presence of children when cohabitation dissolves strengthens the positive association between cohabitation dissolution and depressive symptoms among women, and this positive moderation fades away as young women age. These findings suggest that gender differences in the association of cohabitation dissolution with psychological distress are contingent on the types of psychological distress under consideration and also reveal that cohabitation dissolution intertwined with non-marital parenthood is harmful to mental health, especially for young women.
With the advancement of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM), digital setups that simulate the outcome of orthodontic treatment are frequently used. Incognito appliance system is a lingual orthodontic system that uses digital setups. A limitation to previous studies evaluating CAD-CAM simulated outcomes is the lack of stable reference points to superimpose on. The purpose of this study was to compare the simulated vs actual outcomes with the Incognito Lite appliance system.

Thirty-four final models were compared with their corresponding setup models exported from the Incognito Web site. Final surface 3-dimensional imaging software was used to digitally measure differences between the simulated and actual treatment outcomes using a digital registration and superimposition method that utilizes the unmoved posterior teeth as reference points.

Differences between simulated and actual tooth movement were significant in the translational parameter, with a maximum average discrepancy in the maxillary central incisors of 1.0±0.6mm(P<0.0001) and 0.8±0.4mm(P<0.0001) for mandibular central incisors. Discrepancies between simulated and actual tooth movements decreased from anterior to posterior. The first bicuspids moved the least for both maxillary and mandibular teeth (range of 0.4 mm-0.7mm). The differences for rotational parameters were statistically insignificant with a mesiodistal tip of 1.6°-3.6°, buccal-palatal torque 2.3°-4.4° and rotation around the tooth axis 2.3°-5.0°.

Incognito Lite simulated tooth movements were achieved for rotation, tip, and torque (±3°). However, significant discrepancies were found between simulated and actual tooth position for translation (0.6-1.0mm).

The management of chronic thoracic aortic aneurysms includes conservative management, watchful waiting, endovascular stent grafting and open surgical replacement. The Effective Treatments for Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms (ETTAA) study investigates timing and intervention choice.

To describe pre- and post-intervention management of and outcomes for chronic thoracic aortic aneurysms.

A systematic review of intervention effects; a Delphi study of 360 case scenarios based on aneurysm size, location, age, operative risk and connective tissue disorders; and a prospective cohort study of growth, clinical outcomes, costs and quality of life.

Thirty NHS vascular/cardiothoracic units.

Patients aged > 17 years who had existing or new aneurysms of ≥ 4 cm in diameter in the arch, descending or thoracoabdominal aorta.

Endovascular stent grafting and open surgical replacement.

Pre-intervention aneurysm growth, pre-/post-intervention survival, clinical events, readmissions and quality of life; and descriptive sbut cost comparisons were unfeasible. The choice of intervention is well established, but the timing of intervention remains challenging.

Further research should include an analysis of the risk factors for growth/rupture and long-term outcomes.

Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN04044627 and NCT02010892.
