Although race and economic status have been linked to increased insulin resistance in children, these have not been explored as predictors of hyperglycemia in children with ALL. The objective of this study was to analyze race and income as predictors of hyperglycemia in a diverse sample of children hospitalized with ALL in the United States in the year 2016. Methods We performed a secondary analysis of 18,077 hospitalizations of White, Black, and Hispanic children under the age of 21 years with ALL contained in a nationally representative database. Multilevel binary logistic regression models were constructed to estimate the relationships between race, median household income, age, sex, and obesity and the odds of hyperglycemia in hospitalized children with ALL. Results Hyperglycemia occurred during 5.3% of the hospitalizations. Black children were 37% more likely to develop hyperglycemia than White children. The risk for hyperglycemia did not differ between Hispanic and White children. Residing in areas where annual median income was below $54,000 was associated with 1.4-fold increased odds of hyperglycemia, compared to the wealthiest areas. Older children, females, and those diagnosed with obesity were also at increased risk for hyperglycemia. Discussion An association has been found between treatment-induced hyperglycemia and increased mortality. For this reason, the racial and economic differences in the risk for hyperglycemia identified in this study deserve further consideration.
The purpose of this study was to determine self-reported knowledge, attitudes, prior experience, and perceived needs for the management of overweight and obese patients within a General Internal Medicine Practice.

An emailed cross-sectional survey was sent between June 20, 2019 and September 12, 2019 to 194 healthcare workers (93 primary care providers (PCPs) and 101 nurses) which focused on management of patients with weight issues.

In total, 80 of the eligible 194 participants completed the survey (nurses = 42, PCPs = 38). Up to 87% were white, 74.7% female (74.7%). Most of the responders were either in the age group of 30's (30%) or 50's (30%). Among the responders, 48.8% reported some type of specialty training in weight management since their medical training with lectures being the most common form of training (36%). When asked about their interest in either weight management training or strategies to initiate weight conversations, 79% of the respondents reported an interest in education on weight management or strategies to initiate weight conversations, while 65.8% indicated they would be interested in both topics.

The study enrolled 12 subjects scheduled for a split-skin graft transplantation, where the donor site was used as a model of an acute wound. The treatment time was 75 s, given on 6 occasions. A total of 7 adverse events were regarded as related to the treatment; all registered as pain during the procedure for 2 subjects. One subject had a wound infection at the donor site. The mean colony-forming unit (CFU) decreased by 41% after the treatment, and the mean epithelialization was 96% on both days 14 (standard deviation [SD] 8%) and 21 (SD 10%). The study provides preliminary support for the safety, well-tolerance, and efficacy of HOCl + buffer for acute wounds. The pain was frequent although resolved quickly. Excellent wound healing and satisfying antimicrobial properties were observed. A subsequent in vitro biofilm study also indicated good antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with a 96% mean reduction of CFU, when used for a treatment duration of 15 min (P  less then  .0001), and a 50% decrease for Staphylococcus aureus (P = .1010). Future larger studies are needed to evaluate the safety and performance of HOCl + buffer in acute wounds, including the promising antimicrobial effect by prolonged treatment on bacterial biofilms.The reconstruction of defects of the lateral malleolus involving the exposed fibular bone or tendon is challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical application of the peroneal artery perforator flap with or without split-thickness skin grafting for soft tissue reconstruction of the bony defect of the lateral malleolus of the ankle joints. Reconstruction using a peroneal artery perforator flap with or without split-thickness skin grafting was performed for 15 patients (10 men, 5 women) between January 2007 and December 2018. The mean age was 53.7 years, and the mean size of the flaps was 40 cm2. The flaps were elevated in the form of a perforator flap, and split-thickness skin grafting was performed over the flaps and adjoining raw areas. The flaps survived in all cases; however, partial necrosis was observed in 3 cases. In cases of small-sized defects of the lateral malleolus of the ankle joints where a flap is required for the exposed bone or tendon, reconstruction using the peroneal artery perforator flap is advantageous, since the morbidity rate of the donor site is low and soft tissue is reconstructed.
Bilateral T2 hyperintensities in the medial part of the globus pallidus (GP) are sometimes incidentally observed in patients without a known history of diseases that present with such lesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of this finding and the association between this finding and age, lifestyle diseases and GP calcification.

We retrospectively investigated the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 742 patients, which included between 104 and 108 consecutive patients from each decade of life between the 20s and 80s. The signal intensity ratio of the medial part to the lateral part of the GP in T2-weighted images (T2 medial/lateral ratio) was evaluated. For cases in which brain computed tomography images were available (
=437), GP calcifications were also evaluated. The associations between the T2 medial/lateral ratio and age, sex, history of lifestyle diseases and GP calcification were investigated.

Bilateral T2 medial/lateral ratios >1.10, 1.30 and 1.50 were observed in 29.
