To compare the efficacy, safety and recurrence rate of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) grafts and limbal conjunctival autografts (LCAs) following pterygium excision.

A total of 108 patients (108 eyes) with primary pterygium were included in this study and were divided into group A (56 eyes) and group B (52 eyes). Patients in group A underwent excision of the pterygium followed by LCA while patients in group B underwent PRF grafts following pterygium excision. The PRF was produced using the patient's own whole-blood sample by centrifugation and extrusion. The surgery time, intraoperative complications, postoperative complications, recurrence rate, intraocular pressure (IOP) and follow-up period were recorded and evaluated between the two groups.

The mean surgery time was significantly shorter in group B (25.0±4.2min) than in group A (36.5±6.3min) (P<.001). Recurrence was observed in two cases (3.6%) in group A while no recurrence was observed in group B. No graft loss was observed in either group. No other intra/postoperative complications such as a tear in the graft, injury to the medial rectus muscle, excessive bleeding, scleral necrosis, graft oedema, graft necrosis, pannus formation or symblepharon appeared in either group.

This study presented with a promising outcome of PRF graft applications in primary pterygium surgery. The use of PRF following pterygium excision is a simple, easily applicable, and comfortable method for both patients and surgeons, with less time consumption, recurrence rate and complications, which could be widely used in pterygium management.

Many online interventions for paediatric chronic pain have been developed and evaluated. In accordance with the biopsychosocial model, the recommended treatment approach for chronic pain is multidisciplinary. Despite this, multidisciplinary components within existing online interventions have not been examined. The objective of the present review was to summarise and evaluate the content of existing online interventions for paediatric chronic pain by mapping intervention content to evidence-based guidelines for chronic pain management.

Interventions were identified using an updated systematic review. Nine chronic pain management strategies that reflect evidence-based guidance for multidisciplinary chronic pain management were defined by the authors, examples of which include 'pain education', 'activity pacing' and 'physiotherapy'. Identified interventions were then coded against the target strategies. These codes were compiled descriptively to provide an overview of how well each chronic pain management sultidisciplinary practices in pain management to be translated into online interventions. Improving the availability of pain management resources is essential for many families who cannot attend specialist pain clinics, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is potential for new resources, as well as for established resources, to be further developed to deliver a broader range of pain management content.

The most common symptoms of adenomyosis include heavy menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea. A variety of medical or surgical techniques are utilized for the treatment of adenomyosis, but there are currently no specific treatment guidelines and best practice recommendations for management. The aim of this study is to summarize current treatment strategies for women with symptomatic adenomyosis in a single-center university hospital in order to provide reliable information for developing treatment algorithms.

We conducted an observational cross-sectional study using data from the adenomyosis cohort study from January 2008 to December 2020. Detailed information, including demographic, clinicopathological, and imaging data, were collected from 220 pathologically confirmed patients with adenomyosis.

First, we identified clinical and imaging characteristics in women who underwent surgery or hormone therapy, especially dienogest (DNG) treatment, as first-line treatment. Surgery was generally recommended for multiparous women over the age of 43, especially for patients with intrinsic adenomyosis. Next, we identified the parameters that allowed the continuation of DNG treatment. Oral DNG was given to certain patients with a myometrium thickness of 35 mm or greater and coexisting with endometriosis and/or uterine fibroids. To prevent serious bleeding, DNG treatment can be limited to women with extrinsic adenomyosis with a uterine length of 125 mm or less.

Our findings may provide useful information in developing an evidence-based treatment guideline for patients with symptomatic adenomyosis, nevertheless, further investigation is needed for the validation of treatment algorithms.

Heart failure (HF) is a risk factor for the development of pulmonary embolism (PE). Few studies have examined sex differences in risk of PE among HF patients.

(a) To examine the incidence, characteristics and in-hospital outcomes among patients hospitalised with PE according to HF status; (b) to compare the in-hospital mortality (IHM) after PE between HF and non-HF patients and (c) to identify variables associated with IHM. All analyses were stratified by sex.

We included all adult patients hospitalised for PE from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018. Data were collected from the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database. Poisson regression models were constructed to quantify the difference in the incidences between HF and non-HF populations. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to obtain comparable subgroups by sex and HF status.

We identified 46,835 PE hospitalisations, 11.4% with HF. Adjusted incidence of PE was higher in HF patients than in those without HF (Incidence Rate Ratio 1.11; 95% CI 1.08-1.13). Crude and PSM adjusted IHM were significantly higher in men and women hospitalised with PE suffering HF than in men and women without HF (P<.001). Women with HF who suffered a PE had lower IHM than men with this condition (P<.001) after adjusting.

We report herein that catalase (CAT) DNAzyme can potentiate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living cells by knocking down catalase expression, which could further activate a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive pro-protein, RNase A-NBC, in situ. Using an optimized lipid nanoparticle delivery system to simultaneously introduce CAT DNAzyme and RNase A-NBC into cells, we show that the pro-protein, RNase A-NBC, could be activated in a significantly enhanced manner to prohibit tumor cell growth in different types of cancer cells. We believe the methodology of regulating pro-protein activity using DNAzyme biocatalysis to differentiate intracellular environment could further be extended to other functional proteins, and even fundamental investigations in living systems to develop pro-protein therapeutics.Patients with subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) are prone to the development of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). It is not known whether small infections in SPTCL patients can trigger the development of HLH. The clinical data were collected from 21 SPTCL patients admitted to our hospital from January 2006 to October 2019. Among 21 cases of SPTCL, six cases had HLH as the first manifestation (SPTCL/HLH), seven cases had intrathoracic infection (ITI), five cases were SPTCL/HLH, 13 cases had no ITI or HLH (SPTCL/no HLH). Two patients with SPTCL/noHLH healed spontaneously. We found that 28.6% of the SPTCL patients had HLH as the first presentation. ITI may cooperate with SPTCL to trigger HLH and a small number of SPTCL/noHLH can fully recover without treatment.
Abnormal fertilization (1PN/3PN) and its accompanying polar body (PB) conditions have been less discussed in poor ovarian responders. By observing the PBs, we analyzed the mechanisms of abnormal fertilization and aimed to explore the role of intracytoplasmic sperm injection/in vitro fertilization (ICSI/IVF) in POSEIDON group 4 patients.

An observational study. All fresh IVF/ICSI cycles from January 2018 to December 2019 were evaluated. The inclusion criteria were POSEIDON group 4. A total of 1005 oocytes and 939 embryos were assessed. The mean female age was 40.8 years, and the mean AMH level was 0.6 ng/mL. The normal fertilization rate was 69.7%. The zygote distribution was 18.7% 0PN, 3.9% 1PN, 66.9% 2PN, 9.5% 3PN, and 1.0% ≥4PN. For 1PN zygotes, 59% were denoted as 1PN2PB. The mean 3PN rate was 8.9%.

In POSEIDON group 4, most of the monopronucleated zygotes were 1PN2PB. Digyny (3PN1PB), due to failure to extrude the second PB, was the major cause of triploidy in which ICSI could not circumvent. The distribution of abnormally fertilized zygotes was similar in IVF and ICSI. To investigate the mechanisms of abnormal fertilization and assess whether ICSI is necessary, analysis of PB will provide important clues.
