The Most Common Kids Beds Bunk Mistake Every Beginner Makes
Kids Beds Bunk

Bunk beds can add drama to kids' rooms and provide a sense of adventure. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf for books or a reading light in every sleeping nook to make bunk beds more appealing to children.

Many of our kids beds bunk are convertible to two beds that are complete, perfect if you plan to have your children move to their own bedrooms in the near future. Pick from finishes such as brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.

Ladders and Stairs

When choosing kids beds bunk there is the option to pick between stairs or ladders. Ladders can be installed easily and are cheaper. They also offer an easy way to climb into the top bunk bed. They are also considered to be safer than staircases, as they have a wider area for children to step on and a built-in handrail. Ladders also tend to have grooves in the steps which prevent slippage when climbing up or down the bed.

If you prefer the style and appearance of stairs, they could make an elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases can also be utilized in rooms that are small as they aren't as imposing as ladders. They can be constructed of metal or wood, and they can match the wide variety of bedroom designs. Some staircases have integrated storage drawers which can be an excellent way to expand the space of bunk beds.

Another thing to consider when choosing between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that children under 6 years old not sleep on the top bunk. Children older than 6 years old who can climb vertically may do better with stairs rather than climbing a ladder. If you intend to use your bunk bed for guests, like older children or adults who have limited mobility, it's best to choose stairs.

A straight staircase along the side of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you don't have this much space, you can choose a u-shaped staircase which doesn't require as much space but still offers a secure and safe method of getting to the top bunk. Some beds have the option of distancing the stairs when they're not being used, which reduces their footprint and makes them more suitable for rooms that can be used in multiple ways. There are also kids bunk beds that connect to the bottom of the bed. This eliminates the need for separate handrails and makes it easier to climb to the bottom for kids.

Guard Rails

Guard rails provide children with the confidence and independence to climb in and out of bed on their own. However, they must be set correctly, ensuring that no gaps or movement occurs between rails that guard the bed frame. If you decide to use guard rails, follow the instructions of the manufacturer and inspect them on a regular basis for any holes or looseness which could cause an entrapment.

Keep bunk beds clear of electrical appliances and other items that could become projectiles when your children are playing or sleeping. Place bunk beds away from windows to avoid the risk of falling in the event that your children are on the upper level.

A safety feature you may think about is a night light for the ladder; this can help to illuminate the ladder's path up and down in case children awake at night to go to the bathroom, or wake up during a storm, and need to make their way out of their rooms safely.

A safety net could be installed on the top of the bunk to keep children from falling off while they're sleeping or playing. This is a great idea, especially for older children, who tend to sleep on the top bunk.

Guardrails must be firmly attached to the bunk bed structure and not removed without the use of tools. The openings in the guardrails over the mattress foundation should not be greater than 3.5 inches to avoid entrapment and strangulation. The wedge block is placed on Figure 1 in each of the openings in the topmost guardrail member and above the mattress foundation. Then apply 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the largest end of the block and maintain it for a period of 1 minute.

It is a good idea to tell your children not to hang any objects on the guardrail or ladder like belts, clothes, or sporting equipment. Instead, you should use an organized rack to keep the objects from creating a strangulation risk for your child. Also, make sure that more than one kid does not sleep on the top of the bunk as this could cause an unsafe imbalance that could lead to falls.

Mattresses

When choosing a mattress to use for bunk beds, think about the size and age of your child. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years, or until siblings are no longer sharing a bedroom, so you'll want to pick one that's designed to expand with your child while still providing adequate support as they get older.

Bunk mattresses are usually twin or full-size, and there are plenty of options that can accommodate either. If your child suffers from asthma or allergies, opt for an allergy-free mattress that has a dust-mite barrier as well as a moisture-wicking cover. Kids are likely to experience a lot of spills and accidents, so mattresses with an antimicrobial layer will to shield the foam from harmful bacteria and germs.

Another factor to consider is the feeling of your mattress. Kids generally weigh less than adults, which means they need mattresses that feel firm but also comfortable. A lot of hybrid and latex mattresses have a firm and a soft side to meet the needs of both children.

Memory foam mattresses can be great for children However, they're not our first recommendation as they can hold heat and are too difficult on spines of young children. Consider a hybrid or latex mattress instead, which will provide strong support with cooling infusions that will keep your child or guest sleeping cool and comfortable.

Low-profile mattresses are usually the ideal choice for bunk beds for children. These mattresses are designed to be smaller than regular mattresses, and increase the safety rail height of the top bunk. They reduce "filler" material to offer premium quality with a slim design.

Consider an innerspring model or hybrid that has upper comfort layers that can be removed and replaced as your child develops. These models will give you a clear idea of how the mattress will stand up as your child grows, and you can always put in an extra mattress pad or bed skirt to stop it from sliding off the frame. Some beds have a built-in lip or side rails to stop this from happening.

Storage

Bunk beds can be the ideal way to make space in shared kids rooms. They can also be a cost-effective alternative to buying two separate, full-sized single beds. Many bunks also provide the option of adding a trundle bed that can be tucked away beneath the bottom bunk when it is not in use.

Consider installing a kids bedroom furniture set that has bookcases, desks, and/or dressers to maximize storage and space in a room that has bunk beds. This will allow you to keep all of your child's personal belongings, clothing and toys in one place without cramming them into overstuffed chests or closets. These sets of bedroom furniture are available at a variety of retailers. They are safe to use and meet federal standards.

Stacked bunks can become an imaginative playground as kids can turn the spaces underneath into cosy hideaways and secret play zones. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room for the ultimate kids space that can be used for playing, sleeping and even twirling superhero capes. The room features a bubble wallcovering by Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate getaway.

If you aren't able to build a staircase for your bunk bed that is stacked with kids the ladder could be a simple solution. The ladders are constructed with a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings and can be easily adjusted to alter the distance between ladder rungs to make it easier for children to climb. The ladder rungs are also placed flush with the ground, rather than higher to aid in climbing.

Installing loft beds that can be lowered to just above the ground is another way to maximize space in a bunk bedroom. This allows you to move desks, dressers or toy chests directly under the elevated beds. This is a true way to maximize space and can be a great option for smaller bedrooms, or in a large family home where the beds need to be able to accommodate a lot of people sleeping.
