Diabetes represents a growing public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa, where diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major cause of permanent visual loss. We reported the results of a remote screening of DR among urbanized Mozambican people with diabetes.
We retrospectively collected retinal images and clinical characteristics from 536 patients screened for DR in Maputo (Mozambique), over a period of 2years (2018-2019). Retinal photographs were captured, digitally stored, and scored locally and by an expert ophthalmologist in Italy remotely.
The overall prevalence of DR was 29% with sight-threatening forms accounting for 8.1% of that number. Inter-reader agreement between the local and the Italian ophthalmologists was poor (k < 0.2). Patients with DR were older, had a longer duration of disease, worse glycaemic control, and a higher prevalence of comorbidities. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, HbA1c, diabetes duration, and coronary heart disease (CHD) were associated with DR.

Open fractures in the elderly are distinct compared to younger populations. The purpose of this study is to follow a series of open fractures of the lower extremity in the geriatric population to better prognosticate outcomes.
We performed a retrospective chart review of patients over the age of 65years old who were treated for an open, lower extremity fracture across two level I trauma medical systems. Patients were included if they had documented wound healing problems in the postoperative period, or 6months of follow-up, or if they had a definitive radiographic outcome. Sixty-four patients were included of an average age of 76.23, of whom 73.4% were female.
The fracture types were midshaft femur in 3, distal femur in 9, patella in 2, proximal tibia in 3, proximal fibula in 1, midshaft tibia in 14, distil tibia in 8, ankle in 23, and talar neck/calcaneus in 1. Forty-two fractures were the result of low energy mechanism and 22 fractures were from high energy mechanism. Fourteen fractures were type 1, 3y fracture, as well as informs treatment in terms of wound surveillance and care in the postoperative period.Many trees depend on symbiotic ectomycorrhizal fungi for nutrients in exchange for photosynthetically derived carbohydrates. Trees growing in peatlands, which cover 3% of the earth's terrestrial surface area yet hold approximately one-third of organic soil carbon stocks, may benefit from ectomycorrhizal fungi that can efficiently forage for nutrients and degrade organic matter using oxidative enzymes such as class II peroxidases. However, such traits may place a higher carbon cost on both the fungi and host tree. To investigate these trade-offs that might structure peatland ectomycorrhizal fungal communities, we sampled black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.)) seedlings along 100-year-old peatland drainage gradients in Minnesota, USA, that had resulted in higher soil nitrogen and canopy density. Structural equation models revealed that the relative abundance of the dominant ectomycorrhizal fungal genus, Cortinarius, which is known for relatively high fungal biomass coupled with elevated class II peroxidase potential, was negatively linked to site fertility but more positively affected by recent host stem radial growth, suggesting carbon limitation. In contrast, Cenococcum, known for comparatively lower fungal biomass and less class II peroxidase potential, was negatively linked to host stem radial growth and unrelated to site fertility. Like Cortinarius, the estimated relative abundance of class II peroxidase genes in the ectomycorrhizal community was more related to host stem radial growth than site fertility. Our findings indicate a trade-off between symbiont foraging traits and associated carbon costs that consequently structure seedling ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in peatlands.Previous studies have paid special attention to the relationship between local features (e.g., raised dots) and human roughness perception. However, the relationship between global features (e.g., curved surface) and haptic roughness perception is still unclear. In the present study, a series of roughness estimation experiments was performed to investigate how global features affect human roughness perception. In each experiment, participants were asked to estimate the roughness of a series of haptic stimuli that combined local features (raised dots) and global features (sinusoidal-like curves). Experiments were designed to reveal whether global features changed their haptic roughness estimation. Furthermore, the present study tested whether the exploration method (direct, indirect, and static) changed haptic roughness estimations and examined the contribution of global features to roughness estimations. The results showed that sinusoidal-like curved surfaces with small periods were perceived to be rougher than those with large periods, while the direction of finger movement and indirect exploration did not change this phenomenon. Furthermore, the influence of global features on roughness was modulated by local features, regardless of whether raised-dot surfaces or smooth surfaces were used. Taken together, these findings suggested that an object's global features contribute to haptic roughness perceptions, while local features change the weight of the contribution that global features make to haptic roughness perceptions.The sensory mismatch commonly observed in patients with neck pain disorders could alter intra-trial reliability in simple implicit smooth pursuit eye movement tasks. This could be more pronounced when neck is in torsioned position (SPNT). The aim of this study was to explore the effects of neck torsion, target movement velocity and amplitude on intra-trial reliability of smooth pursuit eye movements in patients with neck pain disorders and healthy individuals. SPNT test was evaluated in 32 chronic neck pain patients and 32 healthy controls. Ten cycles were performed using video-oculography at three different velocities (20° s-1, 30° s-1 and 40° s-1) and at three different amplitudes (30°, 40° and 50°) of target movement. Intra-trial reliability and differences between average gain and SPNT difference from the second to fifth cycle and from the sixth to ninth cycle were assessed using ICC3.1 and factorial analysis of variance, respectively. Intra-trial reliability for gain and SPNT difference at all target movement amplitudes and velocities proved to be good to excellent in both observed groups. Patients with neck pain disorders presented with a trend of inferior gain performance between the sixth and ninth cycle at 30° s-1 of target movement as compared to healthy individuals which was only evident when neck was in torsioned position. Although intra-trial reliability of smooth pursuit neck torsion test is good to excellent, the effects of learning are not as pronounced in patients with neck pain disorders.Colletotrichum camelliae is a widespread filamentous phytopathogenic fungus. In this study, a novel mycovirus designated as "Colletotrichum camelliae botourmiavirus 1" (CcBV1) was isolated from strain ZJQT11 of C. camelliae, and its complete genome sequence was determined. CcBV1 has a genome of 2,506 nucleotides and contains a large open reading frame (ORF) that encodes an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) with 672 amino acids and a predicted molecular mass of 75.23 kDa. A BLASTp search showed that RdRp encoded by CcBV1 is closely related to that of Pyricularia oryzae ourmia-like virus 1 with 73.22% identity. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that CcBV1 clustered in the penoulivirus clade within the family Botourmiaviridae. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a penoulivirus in C. camelliae.Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious and economically important viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. Routine vaccination is one of the preferred methods of protection against this disease in endemic countries. For protective immunity against FMD, repeated immunizations with frequent administration are required. Intradermal immunization has many advantages over intramuscular administration of vaccines. In this study, a commercial tetravalent FMD vaccine adjuvanted with Montanide ISA 206 was administered to cattle via the intramuscular (2 mL [n = 10] and 0.5 mL [n = 9]) and intradermal (0.5 mL [n = 11]) routes. Booster doses were administered 28 days later using the same vaccine and routes. Serum samples were collected on days 0, 7, 14, and 28 post-vaccination (pv) and at 30 and 60 days post-booster. Homologous and heterologous virus neutralization tests and liquid-phase blocking and isotype ELISAs were used to measure the antibody response. However, findings of dual task postural studies have been inconsistent with many studies even reporting improvement in postural stability during dual tasking and thus raising questions about cognitive involvement in postural control. A U-shaped non-linear relationship has been hypothesized between cognitive task complexity and dual task postural stability suggesting that the inconsistent results might have arisen from the use of cognitive tasks of varying complexities. To systematically review experimental studies that compared the effect of simple and complex cognitive tasks on postural stability during dual tasking, we searched seven electronic databases for relevant studies published between 1980 to September 2020. 33 studies involving a total of 1068 participants met the review's inclusion criteria, 17 of which were included in meta-analysis (healthy young adults 15 studies, 281 participants; Stroke patients 2 studies, 52 participants). Narrative synthesis of the findings in studies involving healthy old adults was carried out. Our result suggests that in healthy population, cognitive task complexity may not determine whether postural stability increases or decreases during dual tasking (effect of cognitive task complexity was not statistically significant; P > 0.1), and thus the U-shaped non-linear hypothesis is not supported. Rather, differential effect of dual tasking on postural stability was observed mainly based on the age of the participants and postural task challenge, implying that the involvement of cognitive resources or higher cortical functions in the control of postural stability may largely depends on these two factors.
