This study examined whether syntactic awareness was related to reading comprehension difficulties in either first language (L1) Chinese or second language (L2) English, or both, among Hong Kong Chinese-English bilingual children. Parallel L1 and L2 metalinguistic and reading measures, including syntactic word-order, morphological awareness, phonological awareness, vocabulary, word reading, reading comprehension, and cognitive measures of nonverbal intelligence and working memory, were administered to 224 fourth-graders. Five groups of comprehenders were identified using a regression approach (1) 12 poor in Chinese-only (PC), (2) 18 poor in English-only (PE), (3) six poor in both Chinese and English (PB), (4) 14 average in both Chinese and English (AB), and (5) seven good in both (GB). The results of multivariate analyses of covariance showed that (1) the PB group performed worse than the AB and GB groups in both L1 Chinese and L2 English syntactic awareness; (2) the PC and PE groups performed worse than the AB and GB groups in Chinese syntactic awareness; (3) the PE group had lower performance than the PC, AB, and GB groups in English syntactic awareness; and (4) no significant group difference was found in L2 morphological awareness or vocabulary across both languages. By suggesting that weakness in syntactic awareness can serve as a universal indicator for identifying poor comprehenders in either or both L1 Chinese and L2 English among Hong Kong Chinese-English bilingual children, these findings demonstrate the fundamental role of syntactic awareness in bilingual reading comprehension.Ischemic tolerance is a phenomenon in which resistance to subsequent invasive ischemia is acquired by a preceding noninvasive ischemic application, and is observed in many organs, including the brain, the organ most vulnerable to ischemic insult. In this article, we review the essential roles of microglia and astrocytes in the acquisition of ischemic tolerance through neuron-non-autonomous mechanisms, where the two types of glial cells function in a concerted manner to induce ischemic tolerance.
Increased nasal resistance (NR) can augment upper airway collapse in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Posture change can lead to altered nasal resistance. Our study aimed to investigate the influence of posture changes on NR in patients with OSA.

Healthy controls without subjective nasal obstruction (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) < 5 events/h), patients with OSA and subjective nasal obstruction, and patients with OSA and no subjective nasal obstruction were recruited. NR was measured by active anterior rhinomanometry in sitting, supine, left-lateral, and right-lateral postural positions. Total NR and postural change-related NR increments were calculated and compared among groups.

In total, 26 healthy controls and 72 patients with OSA (mean AHI 39.7 ± 24.8 events/h) were recruited. Of patients with OSA, 38/72 (53%) had subjective nasal obstruction. Compared with controls, patients with OSA and no subjective nasal obstruction had lower total NR (inspiration, p = 0.037; expiration, p = 0.020) ichanism. This study provides a new exploratory direction for the compensatory mechanism of the upper airway to collapse during sleep.
Panoramic radiographs, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are traditionally used for imaging temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its pathologies. Besides these radiographic techniques, the recent use of ultrasonography (US) in diagnosing joint diseases has been introduced. However, there is no prospective clinical study examining the application of US in imaging of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) patients. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the features of the joint and surrounding structures in the US in TMD patients.

320 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria, and 100 of these individuals accepted to participate in the study. This study evaluated 200 TMJ; including the right TMJ and left TMJ of 100 patients. The study was designed as a clinical single-blind observational device trial.

Unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a poor prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) for locally advanced HCC compared to transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE).

A propensity score-matched cohort study was performed in patients with locally advanced HCC with ≥ 4 tumors or portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) who underwent either HAIC using oxaliplatin plus raltitrexed or TACE at three institutions between June 2015 and December 2021. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rates (ORR), and adverse events (AEs) were compared between the groups.

After propensity score matching, 62 pairs of patients were evaluated. The HAIC group had longer OS (15.0 [95% CI 12.1-17.9] vs. Tacedinaline cell line 9.0 [95% CI 5.1-12.9] months; P = 0.034), better PFS (6.7 [95% CI 5.1-8.3] vs. 4.0 [95% CI 2.6-5.4] months; P = 0.020), and a higher ORR (RECIST 1.1 54.8% vs. 11.3%; P < 0.001) than the TACE group in the intention-to-treat population. Compared with the TACE group, Grade 1-2 nausea and vomiting occurred significantly more frequently in the HAIC group.

Due to lack of pediatric-specific data, the management of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in pediatric, adolescents, and young adults is guided by adult CML evidence-based recommendations. Pediatric CML presents differently than adult CML and is often a more aggressive disease with different biological and host factors, yet there is sparse literature on how to address those differences.

Over the past two decades, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have changed the way CML is treated. There are currently three FDA-approved TKIs (imatinib, dasatinib, and nilotinib) for pediatric patients. When choosing which TKI to begin treatment with, there are many factors that should be considered on a case-to-case basis to obtain optimal outcomes. The safety profiles for long-term TKI use in pediatrics require further study. Unlike adults, children are still actively growing during TKI use, and the effect on development can be detrimental. To this end, a diverse group of scientists undertook a comprehensive effort to define current best practices in head kinematic measurement, culminating in a series of manuscripts outlining consensus methodologies and companion summary statements. Summary statements were discussed, revised, and voted upon at the Consensus Head Acceleration Measurement Practices (CHAMP) Conference in March 2022. This manuscript summarizes the motivation and methods of the consensus process and introduces recommended reporting checklists to be used to increase transparency and rigor of future experimental design and publication of work in this field. We explored the relationship between Xist RNA and chromatin silencing during iXCI in vole Microtus levis. We performed locus-specific activation of Xist transcription on the only active X chromosome using the dCas9-SAM system in XO vole trophoblast stem cells (TSCs), which allow modeling iXCI events to some extent. The artificially activated endogenous vole Xist transcript is truncated and restricted ~ 6.6 kb of the exon 1. Ectopic Xist RNA accumulates on the X chromosome and recruits Xist-dependent modifications during TSC differentiation, yet is incapable by itself repressing X-linked genes. Transcriptional silencing occurs upon ectopic Xist upregulation only when repressive marks spread from the massive telomeric constitutive heterochromatin to the X chromosome region containing genes. We hypothesize that the Xist RNA-induced propagation of repressive marks from the constitutive heterochromatin could be a mechanism involved in X chromosome inactivation.

Glycosyltransferase from Petunia hybrida (PhUGT) was introduced to synthesize hyperoside from quercetin through the regeneration system of UDP-galactose. Co-expressing with molecular chaperones GroEL/ES successfully enhanced the catalytic efficiency of the recombinant strain, which assisted the soluble expression of PhUGT. By using a fed-batch approach, the production of hyperoside reached 863.7mg L
with a corresponding molar conversion of 93.6% and a specific productivity of 72.5mg L
