Lignin is an abundant and sustainable source of aromatic compounds that can be converted to value-added products. However, lignin is underutilized, since depolymerization produces a complex mixture of aromatic compounds that is difficult to convert to a single product. Microbial conversion of mixed aromatic substrates provides a potential solution to this conversion challenge. Recent advances have expanded the range of lignin-derived aromatic substrates that can be assimilated and demonstrated efficient conversion via central metabolism to new potential products. The development of additional non-model microbial hosts and genetic tools for these hosts have accelerated engineering efforts. However, yields with real depolymerized lignin are still low, and additional work will be required to achieve viable conversion processes.Phosphorus, as a non-renewable element, is flowing out too fast in the past decades. To sustain the development of this globally scarce resource, efficient measures were taken to recover more phosphorus in the struvite form from wastewater. However, heavy metals in the wastewater might produce an inhibitory effect on phosphorus recovery, and even worse, pollutants might be incorporated in/onto the crystals precipitated. Impurities on struvite will reduce the quality of struvite as a potential slow-release fertilizer and affect the safe application of struvite in agriculture. selleck kinase inhibitor This review aims to identify the trends in the literature to present the residues of heavy metals in struvite. It summarizes the current status in the residues of main metal elements on crystals and its response to wastewater properties, composition, and oxidation state of metals. The adsorption process and potential adsorption mechanism of heavy metals during the struvite crystallization are deeply explored, which might determine the latter release rate of metals when applying into the soil. Possible solutions are further provided to minimize the amounts of heavy metals mainly through adjusting operational conditions or employing pretreatment methods. Finally, this review critically analyzes the limitation gap between theory and actual generalization and potential application of struvite products in the market, and corresponding perspectives in the future are given to safely utilize the phosphorus resource from wastewater in the form of struvite.Bacterial alginate-like exopolymers (ALE) gels have been used in this work as a model for the extracellular polymeric matrix of biofilms. Aim was to relate the mechanical properties and strength of this matrix that make biofilms as persistent to cleaning as they are, to the complex cohesive molecular interactions involved. Mechanical properties of the gels as a function of CaCO3 concentration were investigated using dynamic and static rheology. Gels with relatively low CaCO3 concentrations, between 100 μmol and 300 μmol per g ALE, were found to exhibit similar viscoelastic behaviour as real biofilms, with elastic moduli between 50 Pa and 100 Pa and dissipation factors between 0.2 and 0.3. Increasing CaCO3 concentrations resulted in an increase of the elastic modulus up to 250 Pa, accompanied by an increase in brittleness. link2 At a CaCO3 concentration of 1250 μmol per g ALE this trend stopped, probably due to disturbance of the continuous ALE network by precipitation of salts. Therefore, overdosing of Ca salts can be an adequate approach for the removal of biofouling. All gels exhibited permanent strain hardening under medium strain, and their mechanical properties showed dependency on their strain history. Even after application of an oscillatory strain with 200% amplitude that caused the gel structure to collapse, the gels recovered 65 to 90% of their original shear modulus, for the major part within the first 20 s. Recovery was slightly less for gels with high CaCO3 concentration. In creep tests fitted with a Burgers model with multiple Kelvin elements at least three different interactions in the ALE gels could be distinguished with characteristic retardation times in the range of 10, 100 and 1000 s. Further identification of the mechanisms underlying the gel mechanics will allow the development of targeted strategies to undermine the mechanical strength of biofouling and aid the cleaning process.Vanadium has been classified as a potentially toxic metal and has been given limited attention in comparison to similar trace metals. Similarly, worldwide and continental vanadium pollution and risks remain contested. Here, we synthesized the worldwide concentration of vanadium in marine ecosystems with the relevant ecological and human health risks. We found that vanadium in biota and seawater collected from Asia shows significant increases over the temporal analysis, with rates similar to those reported for vanadium consumption and production. Furthermore, invertebrates have a higher concentration of vanadium than fishes. link3 Similarly, we demonstrate that sediments classified as polluted have concentrations that are not directly correlated with the highest concentrations across continents. Finally, ecological risks were higher from seawater, with potential impacts to 55% of aquatic species in Asia estimated from chronic species sensitivity distribution (SSD). The concentration endangering only 5% of seawater species (HC5) was estimated as 1.13 (0.05-21.19) μg L-1. Estimated daily intakes revealed that overall, there are none to low health risks from aquatic product consumption, yet high risks are plausible to children with consumption patterns in the 95th percentile.Recently, studies have increasingly focused on the occurrence of plastic leachate and its effects on aquatic environments. However, few studies have aimed to identify microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) from environmental samples that are often enriched with natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, three MP-DOM (EPS-DOM, PVC-DOM, and PET-DOM) and eight aquatic NOM samples, and their mixtures, were used to identify a unique optical surrogate for MP-DOM within background NOM. Three major fluorescence peaks (peaks P, H, and L) were identified in the excitation emission matrix (EEM) spectra of both DOM sources (i.e., MP-DOM and NOM). The first two peaks were more pronounced for MP-DOM than for aquatic NOM, whereas peak L showed the opposite trend. The summed intensity ratio of the ranges of the first two peaks relative to peak L, namely, (H + P)/L, clearly distinguished between MP-DOM and NOM samples. The MP-DOM source discrimination capability was compared for several selected spectroscopic indices by tracking their changes in the mixtures of two source groups with increasing fraction of MP-DOM via end-member mixing analysis. This was further evaluated based on the three criteria built on the significance of the difference between the two groups, the correlation coefficients of the regressions, and the minimum fraction of MP-DOM in mixtures that can be distinguished from 100% NOM samples. Irrespective of the plastic type and leaching conditions (i.e., UV-irradiated or not), the new optical index, (H + P)/L, was superior at distinguishing MP-DOM from the mixtures when compared to other commonly used optical indices. The new index can serve as a sensitive, robust, and reliable fluorescence indicator with minimal interference from NOM for detecting plastic leachate in aquatic samples.
This study investigated the role of coping strategies in mediating the relationship between the 7-factor model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and alcohol misuse in veterans.
Data were analyzed from 615 veterans from a nationally representative study of U.S. veterans who met criteria for probable full or subthreshold PTSD. Path analyses examined the role of self-sufficient, socially-supported, and avoidant coping strategies in mediating associations between PTSD symptom clusters and alcohol use disorder (AUD), alcohol consumption, and alcohol-related consequences.
Negative affect PTSD symptoms were associated with AUD through increased use of avoidant coping. Additionally, dysphoric arousal PTSD symptoms were associated with AUD; avoidant coping was associated with AUD and increased alcohol consumption; self-sufficient coping was associated with reduced AUD likelihood anhedonia symptoms with decreased use of self-sufficient coping; and negative affect with decreased use of socially-supported coping and increased use of avoidant coping.
Results underscore the importance of avoidant coping strategies as potential mediators of the relation between PTSD symptoms and AUD. Interventions designed to mitigate engagement in avoidant coping strategies, and to bolster engagement in self-sufficient and socially-supported strategies may help reduce alcohol misuse in veterans with full or subthreshold PTSD.

Understanding and improving outcomes for people with anxiety or depression often requires large sample sizes. To increase participation and reduce costs, such research is typically unable to utilise "gold-standard" methods to ascertain diagnoses, instead relying on remote, self-report measures.

Participants from the UK-based GLAD and COPING NBR cohorts (N=58,400) completed an online questionnaire between 2018 and 2020. Responses to detailed symptom reports were compared to DSM-5 criteria to generate symptom-based diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Participants also self-reported any prior diagnoses from health professionals, termed self-reported diagnoses. "Any anxiety" included participants with at least one anxiety disorder. Agreement was assessed by calculating accagnoses classified most participants as having GAD, whereas symptom-based diagnoses distributed participants more evenly across the anxiety disorders. Further validation against gold standard measures is required.
To qualitatively explore the consequences of soft tissue sarcoma and its treatment experienced by survivors, the self-management strategies they use to deal with these consequences, and any factors that may act as barriers or facilitators to their self-management.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven soft tissue sarcoma survivors who had completed their primary treatment. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed.
Physical, psychological and social consequences of soft tissue sarcoma and its treatment were identified, with side-effects, physical restrictions, body image issues, fear of recurrence, feeling depressed, familial relationships and sexual activity being the most frequently reported. Nine different types of self-management strategy encompassing eighteen specific strategies were identified, including cognitive strategies, lifestyle changes and utilisation of resources. Personal, social and environmental facilitators of self-management were identified; being in a relationship, being at an appropriate life stage, and having support from family, friends and medical staff were most commonly reported.
