During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
