Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums and was a more powerful, constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
