Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without difficulties. Record companies put the band on the place with the directive "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their previous experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

This album starts off hard with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into your mind. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distorted AOR which could seem like a complete blunder, but works extremely well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

The band has performed around the globe to an audience of millions, with sold-out shows across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia and New Zealand. The band's repertoire is vast and their catalogue has accumulated over one billion streams on streaming services worldwide. The band's iconic music has influenced multiple generations of fans.

Steve Lukather has forged a colorful, deep friendship with Joe Williams that is flourishing professionally around the world. In 2018, the duo celebrated 40 Tours Around the Sun with a wildly successful tour across the globe. The album with the same name was ranked #5 on Billboard 200. The new tour by the band features their greatest hits and rarely live cuts, along with some of the songs from Lukather and Williams' individual catalogs.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the traditional sextet style, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency on the drums, as well as an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later, and went on a tour around the world to help promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band that did not include a single song with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
