Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet structure, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
