Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
