A combination of stable carbon (δ
C) and hydrogen (δ
H) isotope ratios and carbon content (% C) was evaluated as a rapid, low-cost analytical approach to authenticate bioplastics, complementing existing radiocarbon (
C) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analytical methods.
Petroleum- and bio-based precursor materials and in-market plastics were analysed and their δ
C, δ
H and % C values were used to establish isotope criteria to evaluate plastic claims, and the source and biocontent of the samples.
C was used to confirm the findings of the isotope approach and FTIR analysis was used to vertify the plastic type of the in-market plastics.
Distinctive carbon and hydrogen stable isotope ratios were found for authentic bio-based and petroleum-based precursor plastics, and it was possible to classify in-market plastics according to their source materials (petroleum, C3, C4, and mixed sources). An estimation of C4 biocontent was possible from a C4-petroleum isotope mixing model using δ
C whimislabelled bioplastics. Out of 37 in-market products labelled as bioplastic, 19 were found to contain varying amounts of petroleum-based plastic and did not meet their bio-based claims.Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor with a dismal prognosis. Current standard of treatment is safe maximal tumor resection followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Altered cerebral microcirculation and elevated blood-tumor barrier (BTB) permeability in tumor periphery due to glioma-induced vascular dysregulation allow T1 contrast-enhanced visualization of resectable tumor boundaries. Newer tracers that label the tumor and its vasculature are being increasingly used for intraoperative delineation of glioma boundaries for even more precise resection. Fluorescent 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and indocyanine green (ICG) are examples of such intraoperative tracers. Recently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based MR thermometry is being employed for laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) for glioma debulking. However, aggressive, fatal recurrence always occurs. Postsurgical chemotherapy is hampered by the inability of most drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Understanding postsurgical changes in brain microcirculation and permeability is crucial to improve chemotherapy delivery. It is important to understand whether any microcirculatory indices can differentiate between true recurrence and radiation necrosis. LITT leads to peri-ablation BBB opening that persists for several weeks. Whether it can be a conduit for chemotherapy delivery is yet to be explored. This review will address the role of cerebral microcirculation in such emerging ideas in GBM diagnosis and therapy.Echinops-like bimetallic CoNiP-CoNi alloy is synthesized from a metal-organic framework (MOF) and serves as an efficient catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with a low overpotential of 300 mV in 1 M KOH at 10 mA cm-2 (η10 ). The cooperative effect of Ni and Co metal, as well as the interfacial properties of the integrated semiconducting phosphide/metallic alloy and electronic conductivity of the MOF-derived carbon regulate the performance of the catalyst. Moreover, the bimetallic CoNiP/CoNi alloy catalyst is interspersed with N-doped graphene, forming a triad catalyst that demonstrates superior activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (η10 =150 mV) and excellent durability, owing to interfacial effects of the triad catalyst, large electrochemical active surface area, and enhanced conductivity from N-doped graphene. The stability of the carbon-containing catalyst during OER (oxidation) is altered by the high reactivity of heteroatom dopant. The assembled CoNiP/CoNi/N-RGO||CoNiP/CoNi water electrolyzer delivers a reasonable cell potential of 1.76 V at 10 mA cm-2 . The synthesized bimetallic CoNiP/CoNi alloy-based triad catalyst thus demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic activity and high durability suitable for efficient alkaline water splitting.A novel Pd0 -catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective [3+2] spiroannulation reaction has been developed for rapid assembly of a new class of [5,5] spirocyclic carbo- and heterocycles. Notably, the regioselectivity could be dominated by fine-tuning of the Pd-π-allyl intermediate. An array of coupling partners could be well-tolerated with excellent regio-, and enantioselectivities. Moreover, the potential application of this reaction was exemplified by several further transformations.Fatty liver disease is one of the main hepatic complications associated with obesity. To date, there are no therapeutic drugs approved for this pathology. Insulin resistance (IR) is implicated both in pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and in disease progression from steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. In this study, we have characterized effects of an α2 -adrenoceptor agonist, dexmedetomidine (DEX), which can alleviate IR in hepatocytes in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced NAFLD mice. The NAFLD mice received a daily intraperitoneal administration of DEX (100 μg·kg-1 ) after 16 days exhibited lower body weight, fewer and smaller fat droplets in the liver, markedly reduced the plasma triglyceride levels, accompanied by improvement of liver damage. This inhibition of lipid accumulation activity in obese mice was associated with a robust reduction in the mRNA and protein expression of the lipogenic enzyme stearyl-coenzyme A desaturase 1 (SCD1), which was probably mediated by the inhibition of C/EBP β, PPAR γ and C/EBP α through suppressing α2A -adrenoceptor (α2A -AR) via negative feedback. Additionally, DEX can also improve IR and inflammation by inhibiting the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and nuclear factor kappa beta (NFκB) signaling pathway in vivo. Our findings implicate that DEX may act as a potential anti-steatotic drug which ameliorates obesity-associated fatty liver and improves IR and inflammation, probably by suppressing the expression of SCD1 and the inhibition of MAPK/NFκB pathway and suggest the potential adjuvant use for the treatment of NAFLD.Utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as electrodes for energy storage/conversion is challenging because of the low chemical stability and poor electrical conductivity of MOFs in electrolytes. A nanoscale MOF, Co0.24 Ni0.76 -bpa-200, possessing ultrahigh stability with uncommon semiconductor behavior (σ=4.2×10-3 S m-1 ) was fabricated. The MOF comprises a robust hydrophobic paddlewheel and an optimized Co/Ni ratio, with consequent control over MOF size and the degree of conjugation of the coligand. A DFT study revealed that appropriate Ni2+ doping reduces the activation energy of the system, thus providing a higher carrier concentration, and the strongly delocalized N-donor ligand notably increases the metal-ligand orbital overlap to achieve efficient charge migration, leading to continuous through-bond (-CoNi-N-CoNi-)∞ conduction paths. These structural features endow the MOF with a good cycling stability of 86.5 % (10 000 cycles) and a high specific capacitance of 1927.14 F g-1 among pristine MOF-based electrodes.Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and extreme weight loss. It has the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric disorders. Recent research indicates that malnutrition in AN patients induces various kinds of functional brain damage, but the pathophysiology of AN remains unclear. We report here the neuropathological findings of a 31-year-old Japanese woman. At age 24, she had a fear of gaining weight and reduced her dietary intake; she had extremely low body weight associated with overeating then self-induced vomiting. Compstatin She was clinically diagnosed as having AN and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital with severe depression and suicidal thoughts. At age 31, she died despite intensive physical care and psychotherapy. Neuropathological examination revealed increased capillary blood vessels and slight fibrillary gliosis in the mammillary bodies, with similarities to Wernicke encephalopathy. The brainstem exhibited the characteristic features of central pontine myelinolysis, characterized by a sharply demarcated region of myelin pallor and relative sparing of axons. Senile changes, including neurofibrillary tangles/senile plaques, were not significant. Severe fibrillary gliosis was prominent around periventricular regions, including the caudate nucleus and nucleus accumbens, which are associated with cognition, emotion, and emotional behaviors via the dopaminergic pathways. These findings indicate that prolonged malnutrition in AN patients may induce brain damage, leading to dysfunction of the reward-related dopaminergic pathways. Furthermore, they represent the first pathological evidence that dysfunction of the cortico-limbic-striatal circuitry is involved in the pathophysiology of psychiatric symptoms in AN patients.A standard two-arm randomised controlled trial usually compares an intervention to a control treatment with equal numbers of patients randomised to each treatment arm and only data from within the current trial are used to assess the treatment effect. Historical data are used when designing new trials and have recently been considered for use in the analysis when the required number of patients under a standard trial design cannot be achieved. Incorporating historical control data could lead to more efficient trials, reducing the number of controls required in the current study when the historical and current control data agree. However, when the data are inconsistent, there is potential for biased treatment effect estimates, inflated type I error and reduced power. We introduce two novel approaches for binary data which discount historical data based on the agreement with the current trial controls, an equivalence approach and an approach based on tail area probabilities. An adaptive design is used where the allocation ratio is adapted at the interim analysis, randomising fewer patients to control when there is agreement. link2 The historical data are down-weighted in the analysis using the power prior approach with a fixed power. We compare operating characteristics of the proposed design to historical data methods in the literature the modified power prior; commensurate prior; and robust mixture prior. The equivalence probability weight approach is intuitive and the operating characteristics can be calculated exactly. Furthermore, the equivalence bounds can be chosen to control the maximum possible inflation in type I error.
To assess a secular change in proportion between lower limbs and torso, we analyzed the evolution of cormic index in schoolchildren attending summer camps organized by the Spanish National Pedagogic Museum between 1887 and 1924, also comparing to later studies up to the present.
Unpublished primary data for height and sitting height were collected from 805 individuals of both sexes. Data were pooled in cohorts according to age and year of measurement. Additionally, the analysis included comparison with published data from both national and international populations.
Among males, a noteworthy decrease of the cormic index is perceived from the first to the last camps, while in females this is only seen for the group under 11 years old. link3 With data from published Spanish references (1900-2019) a decrease is observed for the male series but is not evident for females. Cormic index values from the camps overlap among the international references, despite the former being from much earlier years.
The cormic index decreased among Spanish male children along the decades.
