Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy


Pragmatism places emphasis on experience and context. It may not have an enlightened ethical framework or foundational principles. This can lead to the loss of idealistic goals and a shift in direction.

In contrast to deflationary theories pragmatic theories do not deny the notion that statements are connected to actual states of affairs. They simply explain the role truth plays in everyday endeavors.

Definition

The word pragmatic is used to describe things or people that are practical, rational and sensible. It is often used to differentiate between idealistic which is an idea or a person that is based upon ideals or high principles. A person who is pragmatic considers the real-world situations and circumstances when making decisions, focusing on what can realistically be achieved as opposed to trying to find the most effective theoretical course of action.

Pragmatism is a new philosophical movement that emphasizes the importance of practical implications in determining the truth, meaning, or value. It is a third alternative to the dominant analytic and continental philosophical traditions. Founded by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James with Josiah Royce as its founders, pragmatism grew into two distinct streams, one tending towards relativism and the second toward the idea of realism.

One of the major problems in pragmatism is the nature of truth. Many pragmatists agree that truth is a valuable concept but they differ on the definition or how it works in practice. One method, inspired by Peirce and James, concentrates on the ways in which people tackle issues and make assertions. It also prioritizes the speech-act and justification tasks of language-users in determining whether truth is a fact. Another method, that is influenced by Rorty and his followers, focuses on the relatively mundane functions of truth, namely its ability to generalize, admonish and avert danger. It is also less concerned with a full-fledged theory of truth.

This neopragmatic interpretation of truth has two flaws. It is the first to flirt with relativism. Truth is a concept with an extensive and long tradition that it's unlikely that its meaning can be reduced to a few commonplace applications as pragmatists do. Furthermore, pragmatism seems reject the existence of truth in its metaphysical form. This is reflected in the fact that pragmatists such as Brandom (who is owed an obligation to Peirce and James) are mostly silent on questions of metaphysics and Dewey's lengthy writings contain only one mention of the issue of truth.

Purpose

The purpose of pragmatism was to provide an alternative to the analytic and Continental styles of philosophy. The first generation was started by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James along with their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1855-1916). These classical pragmatists focused on the theory of inquiry, meaning and the nature of truth. Their influence was felt by many influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied these theories to education as well as other aspects of social improvement, as well as Jane Addams (1860-1935) who founded social work.

In recent years the new generation has given pragmatism an expanded debate platform. A lot of these neopragmatists are not traditional pragmatists, but they believe that they belong to the same tradition. One of the major distinctions between the classical pragmatists and the neo-pragmatists is their understanding of what it means for an idea to be true. This isn't a huge problem, but it does highlight one of the biggest flaws in pragmatism: it can be used to justify nearly anything, and this is the case for many ridiculous ideas.

Significance

Pragmatic refers to the practical aspect of a decision, which is related to the consideration of actual situations and conditions when making decisions. It could be used to refer to a philosophical position that emphasizes practical implications in the determining of truth, meaning or value. William James (1842-1910) first used the term "pragmatism" to describe this perspective in a speech at the University of California, Berkeley. James was adamant that the word was coined by his colleague and mentor Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), but the pragmatist outlook quickly gained a name of its own.

The pragmatists rejected the stark dichotomies in analytic philosophy, like fact and value thoughts and experiences, mind and body, synthetic and analytic, and other such distinctions. They also rejected the notion that truth was something fixed or objective, and instead treated it like a constantly-evolving socially-determined concept.

Classical pragmatics primarily focused on the theory of inquiry, meaning, and the nature of truth, however James put these themes to work by exploring the truth of religion. A second generation shifted the pragmatist approach to education, politics, and other aspects of social improvement, under the great influence of John Dewey (1859-1952).

The neo-pragmatists from recent times have tried to place pragmatism in a broader Western philosophical context, and have traced the affinities of Peirce's theories with Kant and other idealists of the 19th century and the emerging science of evolutionary theory. They also sought to define truth's role in an original epistemology of a priori and developed a Metaphilosophy of the practical that includes views of the meaning of language, as well as the nature and the origin of knowledge.

Despite this, pragmatism continues to evolve and the a posteriori model that it developed remains an important departure from conventional approaches. The pragmatic theory has been criticized for a long time however, in recent years it has received more attention. Some of them include the notion that pragmatism doesn't work when applied to moral questions, and that its assertion of "what works" is nothing more than relativism that has an unpolished appearance.

Methods

For Peirce his pragmatic understanding of truth was a crucial part of his epistemological approach. He saw it as a means to undermine metaphysical concepts that were false such as the Catholic understanding of transubstantiation, Cartesian certainty-seeking strategies in epistemology and Kant's concept of a 'thing-inself' (Simson 2010).

For many modern pragmatists, the Pragmatic Maxim is all that one can reasonably expect from the theory of truth. They generally avoid the deflationist theories of truth that require verification before they are valid. Instead they advocate a different method which they call "pragmatic explication". This involves explaining how a concept can be used in the real world and identifying the conditions that must be met in order to determine whether the concept is truthful.

It is important to note that this approach may still be viewed as a type of relativism, and indeed is often criticised for doing so. It is not as extreme as deflationist alternatives and can be an effective way to get around some of the problems of relativist theories of reality.

As a result of this, a number of liberatory philosophical projects, such as those associated to feminism, eco-philosophy, Native American philosophy, and Latin American philosophy, look for inspiration in the pragmatist traditions. Quine, for example, is an philosophical analyticist who has embraced the pragmatist tradition in a way Dewey could not.

While pragmatism is a rich tradition, it is crucial to recognize that there are important flaws in the philosophy. Particularly, pragmatism does not provide a meaningful test of truth and is not applicable to moral issues.

A few of the most influential pragmatists, such as Quine and Wilfrid Sellars, also criticised the philosophy. Yet it has been reclaimed from obscurity by a wide range of philosophers, including Richard Rorty, Cornel West and Robert Brandom.
