Pragmatism is an emerging philosophical movement that focuses on the importance of practical consequences in determining value, truth or value. It is a third alternative to the dominant analytic and continental tradition of philosophy. It was established by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James with Josiah Royce as its founders, pragmatism evolved into two competing streams, one tending towards relativism, the other towards the idea of realism.

One of the major problems in pragmatism is the nature of truth. While many pragmatists agree truth is a key concept, they are not sure how to define it and how it operates in practice. One approach, influenced heavily by Peirce and James, concentrates on how people resolve questions and make assertions and gives precedence to speech-acts and justification projects that people use to determine the truth of an assertion. Another method that is influenced by Rorty and his followers, focuses on the comparatively simple functions of truth, namely its ability to generalize, commend, and caution--and is less concerned with the full-blown theory of truth.

The main flaw of this neo-pragmatic view of truth is that it flirts with relativism since the notion of "truth" has been a part of a long and rich tradition that it seems unlikely that it could be reduced to the nebulous purposes that pragmatists give it. In addition, pragmatism seems to dismiss the existence of truth in its metaphysical aspect. This is evident in the fact that pragmatists such as Brandom (who is owed an obligation to Peirce and James) are largely silent on questions of metaphysics and Dewey's lengthy writings have just one reference to the question of truth.

Purpose

Pragmatism is a philosophy that aims to provide an alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical traditions. Its first generation was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James along as well as their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1855-1916). These classical pragmatists focused on the concept of meaning and inquiry, as well as the nature of truth. Significance

Pragmatic means practical, relating to the consideration of actual world conditions and circumstances when making decisions. It can also be used to describe a philosophical position that focuses on the practical consequences when determining meaning or truth. William James (1842-1910) first used the term "pragmatism" to describe this viewpoint in a speech at the University of California, Berkeley. James swore he coined the term with his mentor and colleague Charles Sanders Peirce, but the pragmatist viewpoint soon gained its own name.

The pragmatists opposed the sharp dichotomies in analytic philosophy like mind and body, thoughts and experience, and synthesthetic and analytic. They also rejected the notion of truth as something fixed or objective and instead saw it as a continuously evolving socially-determined notion.

James utilized these themes to investigate the truth of religion. A subsequent generation applied the pragmatist view of politics, education and other aspects of social improvement under the great influence of John Dewey (1859-1952).


In recent years, Neopragmatists have tried to put the pragmatism in a larger Western philosophical context. They have analyzed the affinities between Peirce’s ideas and the ideas of Kant, other 19th-century idealists, and the emerging science of evolution theory. They also sought to define truth's role in an original epistemology of a priori and to develop a metaphilosophy that is pragmatic that includes theories of language, meaning, and the nature and origin of knowledge.

However, pragmatism has continued to evolve and the a posteriori epistemology it developed is still regarded as a significant departure from more traditional approaches. The people who defend it have had to grapple with a number of arguments that are as old as the theory itself, but have gained more attention in recent years. Additionally many philosophers of the analytic tradition (such as Quine) have adopted pragmatism with a level of enthusiasm that Dewey himself was unable to attain.

Although pragmatism has a long tradition, it is crucial to note that there are also some important flaws in the philosophy. Particularly, the philosophy of pragmatism is not an objective test of truth, and it fails when applied to moral issues.

Quine, Wilfrid Solars and other pragmatists have also criticized the philosophy. Richard Rorty and Robert Brandom are among the philosophers who have reclaimed the philosophy from its obscurity. Although these philosophers aren't classical pragmatists but they do owe a great deal to the philosophy of pragmatism and draw on the work of Peirce, James and Wittgenstein in their writings.
