There is a paucity of information on access to care barriers faced by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) community. This study utilized the 2014 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander National Health Interview Survey (NHPI NHIS) data to evaluate access to care barriers among NHPI population and their effect on general health status. Access to care barriers were categorized as financial barrier (affordability) and non-financial barriers (availability, accommodation, acceptability, and accessibility). Overall, 13.7% reported of the fair/poor general health and over 30% reported at least one access to care barrier. Logistic regression model was used to evaluate how financial and non-financial barriers affect general health status, adjusting for socio-demographic variables such as age, poverty threshold, and marital status and health-related variables such as smoking status and chronic health conditions. Those who reported financial barrier (21.2%) were more likely to be in fair/poor general health (odds ratio 2.25, 95% confidence interval 1.43-3.56). Non-financial barrier, reported by 20.0% of the study population, was found to be not associated with general health status after adjusting for socio-demographic and health-related variables. Improving access to care among NHPI community could be achieved by identifying and addressing the barriers, which in turn could lead to improvement in the general health status among NHPI community.Progeria is a rare genetic disease which is characterised by accelerated ageing and reduced life span. There are differing types of progeria, but the classic type is Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS). Within a year of birth, people suffering from it start showing several features such as very low weight, scleroderma, osteoporosis and loss of hair. Their life expectancy is highly reduced and the average life span is around 14.6 years. Research is going on to understand the genetic and molecular level causes of this disease. Apart from that, several studies are also going on to discover therapeutic techniques and drugs to treat this disease but the success rate is very low. To gain a better understanding about research developments of progeria more experimental models, drugs and molecular technologies are under trial. Different important aspects and recent developments in epidemiology, genetic causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options of progeria are discussed in this review.Caveolae are organizing centers for cellular signal transduction in endothelial cells (ED) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the blood vessels. Myography was used to investigate the effects of a caveolar disruption using methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MBCD) on maxi-K channels in rat carotid arteries. Incubation of carotid segments with MBCD augmented contractions in response to BaK (chemical channel agonist) but not those induced by depolarizing high potassium physiological saline (KPSS). In contrast, incubation with cholesterol-saturated MBCD (Ch-MBCD) abolished the effects of MBCD. Mechanical removal of endothelial cells by MBCD triggered a small contraction in response to BaK. Incubation with nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME) inhibited nitric oxide (NO) release, causing increased contractions in response to BaK, and this effect was reversed by pretreatment with MBCD. These results suggest that MBCD inhibits endothelial NO release. Contrastingly, inhibition of maxi-K channels with iberiotoxin enhanced contractions in response to BaK. Likewise, L-NAME decreased the contractile effect of iberiotoxin, as in the ED-denuded arteries. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed the presence and absence of caveolae in intact blood vessels before and after MBCD treatment, respectively, whereas histology confirmed ED removal after the treatment. Caveolar disruption using MBCD impairs ED-dependent relaxation by inhibiting the release of NO from the ED and altered the contractility of SMCs independent of the ED due to reduced contribution of maxi-K channels to the SMC membrane potential, causing depolarization and increasing carotid artery contraction. These findings might help to understand the physiological role of the maxi-K channels in rat carotid arteries.Metal nanoparticles and microplastics are becoming important pollutants in agricultural fields, but there are few studies on the interaction of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and polyethylene (PE) microplastics with rice seedlings. The two rice cultivars Xiangyaxiangzhan and Yuxiangyouzhan were grown at three ZnONP levels (0 mg L-1, 50 mg L-1, and 500 mg L-1) and three PE levels (0 mg L-1, 250 mg L-1, and 500 mg L-1), and the growth, physiological attributes, and Zn uptake of rice seedlings were measured. Result showed that the ZnONPs and PE treatment effects on the investigated parameters differed between the cultivars, whilst Yuxiangyouzhan produced 6.98% higher in mean total dry biomass than Xiangyaxiangzhan. The mean total dry biomass in Xiangyaxiagnzhan and Yuxiangyouzhan changed by 10.22-30.85% and - 11.74-25.58% under ZnONPs, respectively. The PE treatments reduced growth parameters in Xiangyaxiangzhan, whilst the 250 mg L-1 PE treatment reduced the growth parameter of Yuxiangyouzhan. Besides, the ZnONP treatment had a stronger effect on rice seedling growth than the PE treatment. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/hs-10296.html Furthermore, the ZnONPs modulated the physiological parameter in plant tissue of the two rice varieties. ZnONP treatment lead to the accumulation of Zn in plant tissue and the shoot Zn content was strongly related to shoot cellulose content. Overall, ZnONPs and PE treatments modulated the growth, physiological and biochemical attributes, and Zn uptake of rice seedlings, and the cultivars and dose effects could not be ignored.Oxidation of phenolic acids (PCs) by laccase could produce various kinds of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is expected to have substantial impact on the transformation of antibiotics like sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in soil and aquatic environments. In this study, the formation of semiquinones radical (SQ●-), superoxide anion radical (O2●-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (●OH), and singlet oxygen (1O2) in a laccase-gallic acid (GA) reaction system was confirmed. Meanwhile, GA would be transformed to its monomeric quinone and quinones of di- and tri-polymers. Transformation of SMX by laccase alone is negligible, while which was greatly enhanced in the presence of GA at the optimal pH of 5.5. The dissolved O2 was the requisite for transformation of SMX due to its fundamental role in the formation of SQ●-, the key species initializing the chain reactions for the generation of other ROS. The quenching experiments indicated O2●- and 1O2 were the main ROS responsible for SMX transformation. A total of thirteen products were proposed for the SMX transformation, with the pathways including the breaking of S-N bond, the cleavage of oxazole ring, electrophilic substitution, Michael addition, and condensation reactions. Moreover, the existence of electron-withdrawing substitution group on the benzene ring of PCs and less stability of SQ●- was believed to be favorable for the transformation of SMX. The results above expand our understanding on the role of oxidation of PCs by laccase in the SMX transformation in environments and are of significance in relation to use of laccase in dealing with SMX pollution.Microplastics (MPs) and chemical pollutants usually coexist in aquatic environments. The bioaccumulation and metabolism of pollutants in aquatic organisms can be influenced by MPs. In this study, the bioaccumulation of triclosan (TCS) in tilapia tissues was determined, and metabolomics in the liver, gills, and gut were investigated after 10-day exposure to micro-sized polystyrene (PS) and TCS in water. The results showed that TCS bioaccumulated in various tissues, with the highest average concentration of 2728 ± 577 ng g-1 in the gut. The log bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for TCS in these tissues were in the range of 0.99-3.56. Compared to the TCS treatment alone, MPs showed enhancement on the bioaccumulation of TCS in tilapia skin, liver, gut, gills, and stomach tissues in the TCS plus MP exposure. Especially in the skin and liver, the TCS concentrations were up to 2.06 and 1.38 times higher in the co-exposure of TCS and MPs, respectively. Based on the metabolomic analysis, MPs mainly disturbed the lipid and energy metabolism in tilapia fish. The altered metabolites between treatment with TCS alone and TCS + MPs were consistent, indicating that TCS has stronger disturbance in lipid and energy metabolism than MPs. This implies that the metabolism influence by the mixture of MPs and compounds is complicated in fish tissues.Binary composite of zerovalent iron and titanium dioxide (Fe0/TiO2) was synthesized for the catalytic removal of dichlorophene (DCP) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The as-prepared composite (Fe0/TiO2) exhibits synergistic effect and enhanced properties like improved catalytic activity of catalyst and greater magnetic property for facile recycling of catalyst. The results showed that without addition of PMS at reaction time of 50 min, the percent degradation of DCP by TiO2, Fe0, and Fe0/TiO2 was just 5%, 11%, and 12%, respectively. However, with the addition of 0.8 mM PMS, at 10 min of reaction time, the catalytic degradation performance of Fe0, TiO2, and Fe0/TiO2 was significantly improved to 82%, 18%, and 88%, respectively. The as-prepared catalyst was fully characterized to evaluate its structure, chemical states, and morphology. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that in composite TiO2 causes dispersion of agglomerated iron particles which enhances porosity and surface area of the comation decreased from 0.531 to 67.2. This suggests that the proposed technology is an excellent option for the treatment of antibiotic containing wastewater.PNS and CNS myelin contain large amounts of galactocerebroside and sulfatide with 2-hydroxylated fatty acids. The underlying hydroxylation reaction is catalyzed by fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H). Deficiency in this enzyme causes a complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia, SPG35, which is associated with leukodystrophy. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics of purified myelin isolated from sciatic nerves of Fa2h-deficient (Fa2h-/-) mice revealed an increase in the concentration of the three proteins Cadm4, Mpp6 (Pals2), and protein band 4.1G (Epb41l2) in 17-month-old, but not in young (4 to 6-month-old), Fa2h-/- mice. These proteins are known to form a complex, together with the protein Lin7, in Schmidt-Lanterman incisures (SLIs). Accordingly, the number of SLIs was significantly increased in 17-month-old but not 4-month-old Fa2h-/- mice compared to age-matched wild-type mice. On the other hand, the relative increase in the SLI frequency was less pronounced than expected from Cadm4, Lin7, Mpp6 (Pals2), and band 4.1G (Epb41l2) protein levels. This suggests that the latter not only reflect the higher SLI frequency but that the concentration of the Cadm4 containing complex itself is increased in the SLIs or compact myelin of Fa2h-/- mice and may potentially play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. The proteome data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD030244.
