To describe the utility of wrist circumference in the identification of cardiometabolic risk in overweight and obese children.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in the obesity clinic of a tertiary care referral hospital over a two year period. All children and adolescents aged 5-17 years with nutritional overweight and obesity were recruited. Data pertaining to chronological age, sex, risk factors and family history were collected. Clinical assessment of anthropometry Weight, height, body mass index (BMI), Tanner's stage, wrist circumference, blood pressure, waist circumference and triceps skinfold thickness done as per standard criteria. Biochemical assessment of blood glucose, serum insulin, lipid profile, and Homeostatic Model for Insulin Resistance performed after 12 h of fasting.

We recruited 118 subjects (mean age 10.9 years, 71.1% males, 87.3% obese and 12.7% overweight); 30 (25.4%) had metabolic syndrome. The mean z scores of wrist circumference of children who presented with and without metabolic syndrome was 2.7±0.8 and 2.1±0.7, respectively (p<0.05). We observed a fair positive correlation between wrist circumference z score and BMI z score, (r=0.5; p<0.05). On receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, 97th percentile of wrist circumference predicted metabolic syndrome among overweight and obese children with a sensitivity of 86.7% and specificity of 37.5% (AUC=0.675).

Wrist circumference with 97th percentile as a cut-off is a useful tool to identify metabolic syndrome amongst overweight and obese children and adolescents.

Evidence for the contribution of the brain-gut-microbiota axis to the depression pathophysiology is increasing nowadays. Disturbed gut microbiota equilibrium along with bad dietary habits both lead to kynurenine pathway abnormalities contributing to the depression pathophysiology. In this respect, many studies are found but the interventional clinical trials are limited. The present interventional study aims to evaluate the impact of
spp. supplementation together with improving dietary intake on depressive mood and well-being and their correlation with kynurenine blood level in adult Egyptian healthy volunteers.

A number of 98 healthy female volunteers with a mean age of 46.96 ± 1.82 years were selected and enrolled in this study. They were given yogurt enriched with
spp. daily for eight weeks. Clinical examination as well as questionnaires for the evaluation of psychological well-being and depression were done at base line and after eight weeks of intervention. Fasting blood samples and stool sampld reduced kynurenine blood level.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that brings a significant public health challenge. A rapid and simple method is necessary for testing suspected samples and screening the population.

To better monitor sample effectiveness, this study described a method to detect nucleocapsid protein gene (N gene) of SARS-CoV-2 and human ACTB gene employing real-time duplex reverse transcription multienzyme isothermal rapid amplification (RT-MIRA) assays.

The established real-time duplex RT-MIRA assays showed that no cross-reactions were observed to other pathogens and the detection limit was 100 copies/reaction. Using simulated clinical samples to test established assays further and the amplification process took no more than 20 minutes at 42°C.

RT-MIRA assays are faster and easier than reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). It is expected to be further optimized and evaluated in the detection of SARS-CoV-2 confirmed cases.

Distinguishing bacterial infections from viral infections is very important for accurate and appro-priate drug treatment, alleviating diseases and avoiding side effects caused by drug abuse. The aim of this study is to assess the clinical usefulness of the lymphocyte VCS (volume, conductivity, light scatter) parameters to dis-tinguish bacterial infection from viral infection.

Peripheral blood was collected from 60 viral infection patients (VIG), 63 bacterial infection patients (BIG), and 95 healthy controls (HC). The lymphocyte VCS parameters and blood routine indicators were obtained by using a hematology analyzer with VCS technology. The critical cutoff value, sensitivity and specificity were established based on receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

Mean volume of lymphocytes (MV-LY), median angle light scatter of lymphocytes (MALS-LY), upper median angle light scatter of lymphocytes (UMALS-LY), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly increased in the bacterial infection bacterial infection from viral infection and healthy controls because of its high sensitivity and specificity.
Common detection methods of brucellosis are always accompanied by technical problems in infection diagnosis. In this study, the nested PCR technique was used for the detection of Brucella abortus, and it was compared with other methods.

This case-control study was done in Kurdistan. Blood samples were collected from 50 patients with clinical symptoms and 50 healthy people with no clinical symptoms. Serologic and culture tests were done for all the samples. DNA was extracted using a Promega kit. GSK-3 activation Molecular detection was done by nested PCR. In the end, the results of phenotypical method and nested PCR were compared.

The results of culture and serology tests indicate the limited capabilities of these methods to detect Brucella species. According to the results among all samples, only 14 (28%) were cultured. Rose Bengal test sensitivity was 100% but its specificity 26.09%. Also, Wright's test (tube agglutination) sensitivity was also 85% and nested PCR sensitivity was 46.15%.

The sensitivity of Rose Bengal, Wright's and nested PCR tests were 100%, 85%, and 46.15%, respectively, for this sampling.

The objective of this study was to compare the validity of two different assays for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.

We collected 50 nasopharyngeal swabs in universal transport medium from the emergency department of Asia University Hospital for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The samples for the Liat SARS-CoV-2 influenza A/B test were stored at -70℃ after SARS-CoV-2 testing using the RT-PCR in order to assess method comparison.

In this study, the Limit of detection (LOD) of the cobas Liat SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B nucleic acid test is 12 copies/µL and the assay obtained 100% positive agreement and negative percent agreement with RT-PCR.

In summary, a prefect agreement exists between the detection of SARS-CoV-2 conducted with the cobas Liat SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B nucleic acid test and the RT-PCR. The cobas Liat SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B nucleic acid test is a reliable method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, and it only requires 20 minutes to obtain the results. On the other hand, the cobas Liat SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B nucleic acid test is accurate, easy to use, and provides a faster turnaround time than testing performed in the high-throughput platform.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder in women and this chronic low-grade inflammatory state is often associated with various metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, and other complications.

The current study was aimed to assess inflammatory markers including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and complement element 3 (C3) in PCOS subjects and to investigate the association of these inflammatory markers with insulin resistance. One hundred and fifty PCOS subjects and 150 healthy women as control subjects were recruited for the investigation. Serum was used for investigating the routine and specific parameters.

The mean serum hs-CRP was significantly higher (p < 0.0001) in PCOS subjects (10,738 ± 7,658 ng/mL) as compared to the healthy control subjects (1,128 ± 695.92 ng/mL) and mean serum C3 was also highly significant (p < 0.0001) in PCOS subjects (206.86 ± 21.64 mg/dL) as compared to the healthy control subjects (91.84 ± 16.02 mg/dL).
