Health literacy is a fundamental contributor to an individual's ability to self-manage their health and appropriately use health care services. Tools that positively impact health literacy therefore have potential to improve health outcomes. Inpatient portals are a tool that provides patients an opportunity to cultivate health literacy skills during hospitalization. Our study investigated how inpatient portal use could impact attributes of health literacy.

We conducted semi-structured interviews with 132 patients and 440 care team members to learn about patients' inpatient portal use. Interview transcripts were analyzed deductively and inductively to categorize data and understand emergent themes around health literacy.

Patients and care team members identified inpatient portal functions that they perceived to positively impact health literacy. These functions included providing patients access to health information, care plans, and educational materials, as well as enabling patient communication with their care team.

Recognizing the potential of inpatient portals to improve health literacy is critical to ensure they are implemented in ways that leverage this benefit for patients.

The study analyzed all policy documents and mainstream media reports published in Israel from March to May 2020, during the initial mandatory nationwide quarantine.

COVID-19 has highlighted and amplified structural inequalities; drawing attention to issues of racism, poverty, xenophobia as well as arguably ineffective government policies and procedures. In South Africa, the pandemic and the resultant national lockdown have highlighted the shortcomings in the protection and care of children. Children in alternative care are particularly at risk as a result of disrupted and uncoordinated service delivery.

The aim of this study was to explore the experiences and impact of the pandemic and the resulting social isolation on the wellbeing and protection of children living in a residential care facility.

We used qualitative, participatory approaches - specifically draw-and-write methods - to engage with 32 children (average age = 13.5 years) living in a residential care facility in Gauteng.

Children in care demonstrated an awareness of the socio-economic difficulties facing communities in South Africa, and shared deep concerns about the safety, well-being and welfare of parents and siblings. Although they expressed frustration at the lack of contact with family members, they acknowledged the resources they had access to in a residential care facility, which enabled them to cope and which ensured their safety.

Several measures have been undertaken in the societal and professional field, and the healthcare systems have been reorganized to limit the virus spread, and to cope with the surge of hospital admissions for COVID-19. Questions have been raised regarding the indirect effect of the pandemic, with uncertainties regarding the impact of delays in non-COVID diseases management, due to lockdown, postponement of non-urgent medical consultations and interventions, and decrease in screening. Sudden cardiac death could have been impacted by all those changes, and is generally a good surrogate of public health. In the current article, we review the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology and outcome of sudden cardiac death.Cardiac CT-scan is recommended for sorting patients presenting with stable or acute chest pain with low to intermediate risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Recent studies have shown its reliability for diagnosing CAD in high-risk patients, notably those with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) without ST-elevation. Coronary CT-scan also represents a great opportunity for the screening of atherosclerosis in patients at risk and allows a better prevention of coronary artery disease by introduction of preventive treatments in patients with abnormal coronary CT-scan, especially statins. It is useful for the follow-up of patients who underwent a coronary arteries revascularization with either stents or bypasses. Coronary arteries calcium scoring appears to be an independent predictive factor of cardiovascular and total mortality and its use is recommended for stratifying the cardiovascular risk. However, its interpretation remains unobvious and the patient management is poorly improved by the results. Anyway, if the score is above zero, atherosclerosis is present and therefore a lipid lowering treatment should be discussed.
