Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy

Pragmatism is a philosophical system that focuses on experience and context. It could be lacking a clear set of fundamental principles or a coherent ethical framework. This could result in a lack of idealistic aspirations or a radical change.

Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1860-1916) were the first to introduce it's first generation. The classical pragmatists were focused on the theory of inquiry, meaning and the nature of truth. Their influence was felt by a number of influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied these theories to education as well as other aspects of social improvement, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who founded social work.

In recent times an emerging generation has given pragmatism an expanded forum for discussion. Although they differ from the classical pragmatists, many of these neo-pragmatists believe themselves to be part of the same tradition. Robert Brandom is their main figure. He focuses his work on semantics and the philosophy of language, but draws from the philosophy of Peirce, James, and others.

One of the primary distinctions between the classical pragmatists and neo-pragmatists is their understanding of what it takes for an idea to be true. The classical pragmatists focused on a concept called 'truth-functionality,' which states that an idea is genuinely true if it is useful in practice. Neo-pragmatists instead focus on the concept of "ideal justified assertibility," which says that an idea is true if it is justifiable to a certain audience in a certain manner.

This view is not without its problems. The most frequent criticism is that it can be used to justify all sorts of silly and illogical ideas. They also have sought to clarify the role of truth in a traditional epistemology that is a posteriori, and to develop a pragmatic metaphilosophy that includes the concept of language, meaning and the nature of knowledge.

However, pragmatism has continued to evolve, and the epistemology of a posteriori that it developed is still regarded as an important distinction from traditional methods. Its defenders have been forced to grapple with a number of objections that are as old as the pragmatic theory itself, but which have gained more attention in recent years. They include the notion that pragmatism is a flop when it comes to moral issues, and that its claim that "what works" is little more than relativism with an unpolished appearance.
