The kinetics of adsorption toward a saturated state and desorbing reversely from the saturated state were investigated on a 15 nm sample that was etched sufficiently to suppress the influence of the silica gel left in the pores. To clarify the role of the pores, the relative humidity (RH) was transformed to Kelvin's diameter, φ. There were pronounced hysteresis loops in the adsorption amounts against humidity, in which adsorption occurred at higher humidities and desorption took place at humidities corresponding to sizes of pores confirmed by mercury intrusion porosimetry. On the basis of weather data in Tokyo, the antifogging coating having pores larger than 12 nm in size was proposed with an emphasis on the recovery of antifogging. Transbronchial lung biopsy showed the presence of non-caseating epithelioid cell granulomas. The patient received high-dose corticosteroids immediately after diagnosis, albeit with incomplete clinical improvement in vision on a three-month follow-up. In conclusion, we report a novel case of sarcoidosis-related optic neuritis following COVID19 vaccination.Steroids are frequently used for symptom control in cases of asthma exacerbation. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of short-term and long-term oral steroid therapy on symptom control in patients with asthma exacerbation. Patients that received short-term ( less then 10 d) and long-term (≥10 d) oral steroid therapy during asthma exacerbation were compared retrospectively. A visual analog scale (VAS) for symptom severity was administered, and the asthma control test (ACT) and pulmonary function tests were performed before and after treatment. The study included 69 patients and the overall mean duration of steroid treatment was 9.57±3.58 d (range 5-25 d). Mean duration of short-term and long-term steroid treatment was 6.54±0.99 d and 11.63±3.21 d, respectively. Serious side-effects were not observed following oral steroid therapy. Post the short- and long-term oral steroid therapy there were not any significant differences between the 2 groups in terms of ACT, FEV1 (forced expiratory volume 1), or VAS symptom scores. The findings show that in patients with mild asthma exacerbation short-term oral steroid therapy is as effective as long-term steroid therapy and can be safely used for symptom control during periods of mild asthma exacerbation.A 55-year-old man was admitted to a hospital in Northeast India with fever, cough and breathlessness and was diagnosed with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. He was a known case of seropositive, erosive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and was taking disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). The patient was treated with remdesivir, heparin and a short course of corticosteroids for COVID-19 pneumonia. With the improvement of COVID-19 pneumonia, the patient also noticed a marked improvement in his joint symptoms despite not taking any DMARDs for RA. The temporal relationship between the time of disappearance of all signs and symptoms of RA within a few days after COVID-19 pneumonia and maintenance of RA remission for over one year of follow up to date suggests that COVID-19 likely caused the remission of RA. This case highlights the need for larger studies to understand the COVID-19 effects on RA remission and their potential link if any. However, the evidence of worse outcome with COVID-19 in immunosuppression which is common in RA cannot be overlooked.Combined small cell lung carcinoma (C-SCLC) is rare and accounts for 1-3% of all lung cancer cases. Although its incidence has increased recently, there are limited studies on it. The records of patients admitted to our hospital between January 2015 and December 2019 and diagnosed with histologically proven combined small cell were scanned retrospectively and reviewed. 31 patients were analyzed. The average follow-up time was 10 months. The radiotherapy (RT) rate, surgery rate, and large cell malignancy rate were significantly lower in the ex group than in the living group (p=0.024, p=0.023, p=0.015). The rates of extensive disease, metastasis, and thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF1) were significantly higher in the old group than in the living group (p=0.000, p=0.000, p=0.029, respectively). In this work, we optimized the composition of a methylcellulose (MC) hydrogel to confer it with the ability to form a gel at physiological temperatures while remaining in the liquid phase at room temperature to allow gas-plasma treatment with suitable formation of plasma-generated RONS. MC hydrogels demonstrated the capacity for generation, prolonged storage and release of RONS. This release induced cytotoxic effects on the osteosarcoma cancer cell line MG-63, reducing its cell viability in a dose-response manner. These promising results postulate plasma-treated thermosensitive hydrogels as good candidates to provide local anticancer therapies.
Childhood cancer survivors are confronted with various chronic health conditions like therapy-related malignancies. However, it is unclear how exposure to chemotherapy contributes to the mutation burden and clonal composition of healthy tissues early in life. Here, we studied mutation accumulation in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) before and after cancer treatment of 24 children. Of these children, 19 developed therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN). Posttreatment HSPCs had an average mutation burden increase comparable to what treatment-naïve cells accumulate during 16 years of life, with excesses up to 80 years. In most children, these additional mutations were induced by clock-like processes, which are also active during healthy aging. Other patients harbored mutations that could be directly attributed to treatments like platinum-based drugs and thiopurines. Using phylogenetic inference, we demonstrate that most t-MN in children originate after the start of treatment and that leukemic clones become dominant during or directly after chemotherapy exposure.

Methods Data was collected retrospectively on Philippine General Hospital pediatric brain tumor patients from 2015 to 2019. PSI was calculated. Associated factors were determined. Results 196 patients were included. Median PSI was 80.5 days. Longer PSI was significantly associated with older age, supratentorial and low-grade tumors, more physician consults prior to subspecialist referral, longer interval from neuroimaging request to facilitation, and those presenting with seizures (11-month delay), poor school performance (1-year delay), behavioral changes (1.3-year delay) and secondary amenorrhea (3-year delay). Conclusion Delayed diagnosis among Filipino brain tumor patients is associated with age, tumor characteristics and symptoms that are uncommon in this condition. Awareness of these symptoms through physician education, close monitoring of patients, early subspecialist referral and better neuroimaging access may lead to earlier diagnosis.
