The research study aims to analyze the discharges of solely domestic wastewater from 15 single-family dwellings. This sizable dataset, containing over 300 unique and insightful data points, makes it possible to accurately qualify the raw wastewater in terms of concentrations, volumes and pollutant loads. Findings quantify the extremely wide data variability. As such, for single-family households of fewer than six residents, it is suggested not to use the standard P.E. pollution value as the design load, but rather a load range defined by the interval [10th percentile, 90th percentile] of the data distribution, i.e. [123; 568 L·d- 1] and [30; 281 g BOD5·d-1], respectively, for the daily hydraulic and organic loads. Also, an analysis of the hydraulic peak factor would tend to lobby in favor of a collective sewer solution. For subdivisions and residential zones with little economic activity and similar French lifestyle, the daily domestic pollution per resident is now determined with the values 40 g suspended solids, 94 g carbon oxygen demand, 40 g five-day biochemical oxygen demand, 6.7 g NH4+-N, 10.4 g Kjeldhal nitrogen, and 1.2 g total phosphorus for a volume of 83 L. Those data could be used to optimize design and operation of decentralized or small-scale wastewater treatment plant. The membrane fouling issue has aroused great concern. To improve their antifouling properties, surface grafting with oxidative deposition were employed to amend a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The modifiers were amino-modified graphene oxide (AMGO), dopamine (DPA) and 1,3-diaminoguanidine hydrochloride (DAGH). To take bovine serum albumin (BSA, 1 g/l) as an example of organic materials, BSA interception rate and pure water flux recovery rate increased to 93.65% and 66.74%, respectively, while the corresponding values for the original membrane were much lower (72.82% and 31.72%). The optimum synthesis conditions were found to be 1.5 mg/ml of DPA, 1 wt% of DAGH, 2 mg/ml of AMGO, 4 h of DPA oxidation deposition time and 1 h of AMGO grafting time. Many functional groups like C = N, -NH2, C = O and -OH improved the membrane surface hydrophilicity leading to a higher resistance to organic pollution. Dopamine and guanidyl facilitated the antimicrobial performance of the modified membrane, whose antimicrobial rate was up to 96%, while the raw membrane had no antimicrobial activity. The amended membrane possessed 40% higher mechanical strength than the initial one. It could withstand a high pumping suction force. The noteworthy property was that the irreversible fouling rate decreased by 55%. Therefore, the amended membrane could restore its flux much more easily. For typical wastewater treatment processes of urban sewage, plants are often noneffective to improve water qualities of lightly polluted domestic sewage, and urban constructed water quality treatment (WQT) wetlands designed with engineering landscape methods are utilized to optimize both water qualities and landscape values in recent years. The research determines the effects of two typical ecological engineering landscaping projects of urban constructed WQT wetlands by analysing their effects of wastewater quality improvements. Differences of water quality indicators (WQI) respectively among different treatment stages of wetlands includes surface flow wetland, vertical flow wetland, floating wetland islands etc., which have been measured and compared. Evaluation of urban constructed WQT wetlands engineering landscaping has been concluded based on comparisons among hydrological indicators and water quality indicators, i.e. pH, DO, NH3-N, CODCr, TP. Removal effects of individual indicators, includes NH3-N, CODCr and TP during different treatment stages have been quantitatively analysed. In accordance with quantitative analysis, benefits and deficiencies of practical landscape design of urban constructed WQT wetlands are concluded. By adapting proper principles in engineering landscaping, environmental and economic benefits can be achieved to create sustainable landscapes of urban constructed WQT wetlands.Nowadays, modelling, automation and control are widely used for Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRF) upgrading and optimization. Influent generator (IG) models are used to provide relevant input time series for dynamic WRRF simulations used in these applications. Current IG models found in literature are calibrated on the basis of a single performance criterion, such as the mean percentage error or the root mean square error. This results in the IG being adequate on average but with a lack of representativeness of, for instance, the observed temporal variability of the dataset. However, adequately capturing influent variability may be important for certain types of WRRF optimization, e.g., reaction to peak loads, control system performance evaluation, etc. Therefore, in this study, a data-driven IG model is developed based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network and is optimized by a multi-objective genetic algorithm for both mean percentage error and variability. Hence, the influent generator model is able to generate a time series with a probability distribution that better represents reality, thus giving a better influent description for WRRF design and operation. TEN-010 nmr To further increase the variability of the generated time series and in this way approximate the true variability better, the model is extended with a random walk process.Changes in functional properties of biological denitrification in the long-term use of methanol were explored in both pre- and post-denitrification processes. The two systems employed were sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using post-denitrification in temporal sequence, and Carrousel oxidation ditch, which was equipped with a separate pre-denitrification zone. In the SBR, stable nitrate reduction rates reached after 37 days elapsed with addition of methanol (TOC/N = 1.4-1.8) at the start of anoxic phase, and specific denitrification rate increased from 0.378 mgNOx-N·(gVSS·h)-1 to 2.406 mgNOx-N·(gVSS·h)-1. Besides, by means of nitrogen uptake rate (NUR) batch tests based on methanol-adapted sludge, the appropriate range of TOC/N ratios for complete denitrification was estimated to be 1.10-2.68. By comparison, the Carrousel oxidation ditch that was fed with methanol in the anaerobic zone took fewer days (29 days) to obtain a constant effluent nitrate. Moreover, the denitrification yield in ditch was elevated from an initial value of 0.082 mgTN/mgCOD to 0.123 mgTN/mgCOD, and the nitrogen removal efficiency reached up to a level of 68%. The focus on denitrification potential with external methanol is valuable to provide information for developing carbon dosage control, as well as predict the nitrate effluent quality of the plant. The modelling of urban drainage systems is an important aspect of their design process and long-term statistical modelling using historical rain series is commonly used. The objective of this study is to determine whether logistic regression models that use rainfall event statistics can be a viable alternative to create job lists with fewer extraneous events. Two methods are used to develop a regression model; both use iterative stepwise algorithms to select the rain variables to include and both perform similarly. The resulting model is able to capture ∼90% of the relevant events with ∼50% fewer jobs compared to the reference job list. The results suggest that there is no right threshold to use, but instead this methodology facilitates balancing the number of jobs with the desired level of precision of the results. In all cases, it is possible to greatly decrease the number of jobs that need to be run. The methodology works relatively well on different nodes in the system, though node characteristics appear to impact the amount of CSOs captured.Iron-oxidizing bacteria played an important role in the treatment of Sb-containing wastewater. In this study, effect of different iron sources on Sb(III) removal ability by isolated iron-oxidizing bacteria (named as IOB-L) was conducted systemically in batch experiment. Moreover, ferrous lactate and zero-valent iron were chosen as iron sources for IOB-L. The results showed that after inoculation of 2% volume of IOB-L, Sb(III) concentration in water decreased from initial 18 mg/L to 4.1 mg/L at optimal pH of 7.0. There was no reaction between Sb(III) and ferrous lactate, whereas corrosion product of iron can adsorb a certain amount of Sb. When active IOB-L cultivated in ferrous lactate, a better removal rate of Sb(III) can be reached with a longer stagnate phase for bacteria. However, Sb(III) removal ability of IOB-L using zero-valent iron as iron source was lower. SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS analysis further indicated that ferrous lactate was oxidized by IOB-L and precipitated as biogenic iron oxides which had strong adsorption ability towards Sb(III), whereas zero-valent iron was not a good iron source.Recent studies have focused on proposing materials with larger pores and lower cost to replace conventional membranes. This study aims to investigate the performance of an anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) at pilot scale, acting as a post-treatment for an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor treating sewage, for the removal of complementary organic matter, focusing on the module design, dynamic layer formation and process performance. The configurations tested on this study were UASB followed by stone filter and three AnDMBRs in series with polyester pore sizes of 100 μm, 50 μm, and 5 μm; UASB followed by disc filter and the three AnDMBRs in series; UASB followed by the three AnDMBRs in series; and UASB reactor with only one AnDMBR module. Regarding the studied configurations, high removals of total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, and turbidity were achieved in all experimental setups. The use of stone and disc filters did not bring clear benefits to the system concerning the direct application of filtration with dynamic membranes, therefore, their removal in the system was favorable. The dynamic membrane formation was faster in the 50 μm mesh, and only a few hours were necessary to obtain a permeate quality with a total suspended solids concentration and a turbidity lower than 15 mg·L-1 and 30 NTU, respectively. Thus, the dynamic membrane technology proved to be a potential solution in the post-treatment of UASB reactor effluents. This study involved novel-designed sludge biochar (SB) adsorbed for arsenic removal with lower operating costs and higher adsorption efficiency properties. Generally, biochar only relies on micropores for pollutant adsorption, but physical adsorption is not highly efficient for arsenic removal. Therefore, in order to improve the removal efficiency of arsenic by SB, diethylenetriamine (DETA) and FeCl3 were used in this study to modify the surface of SB by an immersion method. The objectives of this research are to obtain optimum operation conditions by assessing the effect of different Fe content, pH and initial concentration on adsorbing arsenic. This study is the first to use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to simulate and verify the adsorption mechanism of arsenic by SB. Results showed the presence of amine/iron oxyhydroxides functional groups greatly promoted SB surface activity and its arsenic adsorption potential. The surface area, pore volume and pore size of the SB were estimated to be 525 m2 g-1, 0.35 cm3 g-1 and 8.
