Over the past several years, a new problem affecting the elderly population has been increasingly reported in popular press-the elderly population is dying as a result of loneliness and related factors at a rate greater than that of lack of medical care. The problem is so pervasive that loneliness is being described as an epidemic.

The objective of this inquiry was to examine whether the physical design of the lived environments could contribute to reducing loneliness in the elderly population.

A combination of scoping and conceptual review of published literature was adopted for the study. The process involved multiple phases of searching, and a review was conducted at each stage. Databases targeted include PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, PsycArticles, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and SocINDEX. In all, 44 articles and books were subjected to in-depth analyses of underlying concepts, constructs, relationships, and empirical findings.

Several theories including meaning in life theory, lifespan ego-development theory, symbolic interaction theory, proxemics, and affordance theory suggest that the design of the physical environment may have a role in addressing loneliness in the elderly. A potential explanatory model articulating the causal pathway is presented in this article.

This exploratory study gathered an in-depth understanding of Canadian transitional care programs and described how each program functions to support older adults and family/friend caregivers. Nine key informants were interviewed about the development of transitional care programs within four Canadian provincial regions including Atlantic, Central, Prairie, and West Coast. Key facilitators and barriers influencing the development and long-term success of transitional care programs included program scope, program structure, continuity of care, funding, and health system infrastructure. Future research is required to identify how a broad range of transitional care programs operate and to disseminate knowledge with health leaders and decision-makers to ensure transitional care programs are embedded as essential health system services.
To evaluate whether the implementation of our surgical approach, referred to in the text as Linear Cutter Vessel Sealing System (LCVSS) technique, will improve perioperative outcomes in patients with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS), specifically by reducing blood loss and blood transfusion rates at the time of cesarean hysterectomy (C-HYST). The LCVSS technique integrates the following (1) hysterotomy performed using the Linear Cutter, (2) no placental manipulation, (3) cauterization of anatomically prominent vascular anastomosis using the handheld vessel sealing system, and (4) completion of bladder dissection until the cervico-vaginal junction before ligation and division of uterine arteries.

This is a retrospective cohort study that analyzed perioperative outcomes in patients undergoing C-HYST for PAS at a tertiary care center from 1 July 2014 to 1December 2019. Comparisons were performed between cases managed with the use of the LCVSS technique (designated as LCVSS cohort) and those managed without thd 0 vs 8%,

To describe asthma control and household environmental exposures among adults and children with asthma in Puerto Rico.

A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the 2014-2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Asthma Call-back Survey on 931 adults and 177 children with current asthma in Puerto Rico. These data were analyzed to assess the prevalence of uncontrolled asthma in Puerto Rico and potential associations with household environmental exposure to cockroaches, smoke, and mold. Asthma control was classified using daytime and nighttime symptoms, activity limitation, and short-acting beta agonist use. Prevalence and prevalence ratios were calculated, adjusting for sample weighting.

An estimated 53% of adults with asthma and 29% of children with asthma in Puerto Rico have uncontrolled asthma. Among adults with asthma, in the past 30 days, 29% had seen or smelled mold and 50% had seen cockroaches; in the past week, 12% reported having someone smoke in their home. Adults with uncontrolled asthma were 1.4 times more likely to have observed mold in their homes than were those with controlled asthma when adjusting for age, sex, education, and income (prevalence ratio [95% confidence interval] 1.4 [1.1, 1.8]). Children with uncontrolled asthma were also more likely to have mold observed in their home than were children with controlled asthma (adjusted PR [95% CI] 3.0 [1.3, 7.1]).
