Environmental contamination by plastics and microplastics is a recognised problem worldwide, and it is the focus of many research teams. In the quantification of microplastics in the environment (plastic items with dimensions between 1 μm and 5 mm), the search for shared and universally recognised protocols and methodologies is still ongoing. In this study, the use of a method for extracting microplastics from marine sediments based on density separation has been considered. Fifty studies were analysed to investigate the scenario of salts exploited during microplastic extraction. The most commonly used salts are NaCl (45.6%), ZnCl2 (19.3%) and NaI (17.5%). Considerations related to cost, availability, hazards of the salts and thus the repeatability of the related extraction method are reported. In light of the findings, NaCl remains the most readily usable, economical and effective salt for the extraction of microplastics from marine sediments.It is unclear what the effects of taxes on sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) are on consumer behaviour and which consumers may be affected the most. We evaluate the effect of the SSB tax introduced in Catalonia (but not in the rest of Spain) in May 2017 using loyalty card data of monthly purchases by 884,843 households from May 2016 to April 2018. Using a Difference-in-Differences approach, we study the SSB tax effect on the purchased quantity of beverages and sugar. Our results suggest a reduction in purchases of taxed beverages and a small increase in purchases of untaxed beverages. Households have substituted taxed beverages with their lower sugar (untaxed) counterparts. This has led to a 2.2% overall reduction in sugar purchases from beverages. Our study implies that although sin taxes moderately change consumer behaviour, a combination of different policies would be required to tackle obesity.This paper offers theoretical and substantive contributions to migration-health scholarship by employing rich panel data with biomarkers to estimate the effect of migration and urban living on non-communicable disease risk in South Africa. Internal migration and urbanization continue to be pervasive demographic and socio-economic phenomena that structure daily life in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs). Yet, how these processes affect illness and disease in low-resource settings is still not well understood. Five waves (2008-2017) of South Africa's National Income Dynamics Study data and fixed-effects modeling are used to estimate the relationship between urban residence, migration, and health. Results indicate that the migration-health relationship differs by gender urban living for men is associated with lower blood pressure. While urban residence appears to convey a health advantage when men reside in urban compared with rural places, there is no evidence of an urban health advantage among women. Migration does, however, negatively affect women's health through higher blood pressure (BP). These findings highlight the need for further interrogation of the ways in which processes and health consequences of migration and urban living are structured by gender in LMICs. Given the importance of urbanization and the prevalence of migration in LMICs, the gendered determinants of blood pressure may be key to understanding rising hypertension incidence in contexts like South Africa.Advances in genomics research have led to the development of polygenic risk scores, which numerically summarize genetic predispositions for a wide array of human outcomes. Initially developed to characterize disease risk, polygenic risk scores can now be calculated for many non-disease traits and social outcomes, with the potential to be used not only in health care but also other institutional domains. In this study, we draw on a nationally-representative survey of U.S. read more adults to examine three sets of lay attitudes toward the deployment of genetic risk scores in a variety of medical and non-medical domains 1. abstract belief about whether people should be judged on the basis of genetic predispositions; 2. concrete attitudes about whether various institutions should be permitted to use genetic information; and 3. personal willingness to provide genetic information to various institutions. Results demonstrate two striking differences across these three sets of attitudes. First, despite almost universal agreement that people should not be judged based on genetics, there is support, albeit varied, for institutions being permitted to use genetic information, with support highest for disease outcomes and in reproductive decision-making. We further find significant variation in personal willingness to provide such information, with a majority of respondents expressing willingness to provide information to health care providers and relative finder services, but less than a quarter expressing willingness to do so for an array of other institutions and services. Second, while there are no demographic differences in respondents' abstract beliefs about judging based on genetics, demographic differences emerge in permissibility ratings and personal willingness. Our results should inform debates about the deployment of polygenic scores in domains within and beyond medicine.There is ongoing debate about how the funding system for social care of older people in England should best be reformed. We investigated how public attitudes to individual and state responsibility for paying for social care in later life vary with demographic and socio-economic characteristics. Four vignettes of individuals in need of home care or residential care with varying levels of savings, income and housing wealth were presented to a sample of people aged 18-75 years (n = 3000) in December 2018. Respondents were asked if care costs should be paid by the user, the state or shared. They were also asked about the best way to pay for social care in old age. Latent class analysis was used to identify sub-groups with similar preferences for paying for care, and to explore their socio-demographic characteristics. We identified five classes. The majority (Class 1, 58%) preferred that the state and the user should share social care costs. Class 2 (18%) thought that the state should pay all costs regardless of users' savings, income or housing wealth. Class 3 (15%) preferred users to pay all costs at all levels of savings, income and housing wealth, with the exception of those unable to afford the costs. Classes 4 and 5 (5% each) were characterised by different patterns of 'don't know' answers. Socio-economic status was higher among those proposing higher user contributions (Class 3) and lower among those with several 'don't' know' responses (Classes 4 and 5). Concerns about care costs in old age were high among those proposing that the state pays all costs (Class 2) and those preferring that users pay all costs (Class 3). This study shows that public views on social care funding vary with respondents' characteristics and that proposals to reform the system need to be carefully calibrated.Contact shielding has been in widespread use for the last 60-70 years aiming to protect against genetic effects, cancer, and other detriment. Since 2012, studies have begun to appear in the literature that question the continued use of such shielding, especially when radiographic technology has changed so much over the intervening period This literature has culminated in several professional bodies such as the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) issuing guidance and statements recommending against the continued routine use of patient contact shielding. Many professional societies have also endorsed these statements. National statements on the matter continue to be produced. It is notable however that the major European bodies involved in diagnostic radiology and radiation safety have not to date issued a statement on patient shielding. This commentary looks at reasons for that and argues that it is now time for a European consensus statement on patient shielding. It is the authors belief that there are advantages to building on the work done by the AAPM and BIR, using the opportunity to amplify the statements, propagate the intent of the original statements, refine the message to deal with questions that have arisen since their publication. Α working group, Gonad and Patient Shielding (GAPS) has been formed by members from a) the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), b) the Eurosafe Imaging initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), c) the European Federation of Radiographers Societies (EFRS), d) EURADOS and e) the BIR to produce a joint statement on the proper application of patient shielding in diagnostic and interventional radiology.DNA transfection is routinely used for delivering expression of gene of interest to target cells. Transfected DNA has been known to activate cellular DNA sensor(s) and innate immune responses, but the effects of such responses on transfected DNA are not fully understood. STING (stimulator of interferon genes) is an important adaptor protein in cellular innate immune response to various DNA and RNA stimuli and upon activation induces significant type I interferon responses. In this work, we characterized the effects of STING on gene expression driven by transfected double-stranded DNA. We observed that gene expression from transfected DNA was repressed in the presence of overexpressed STING, but increased if endogenous STING was knocked down through RNA interference. Endogenous chromosomal genes and chromosome-integrated exogenous genes were not affected by such STING-mediated restriction, which did not depend on DNA circularity or linearity, promoter used, or bacterial sequences in transfected DNA. Mechanistically, STING-mediated repression of transfected DNA correlates with reduced mRNA levels, and partially involves the induction of interferon β production by STING. Collectively, these data indicate that episomal double-stranded DNA is targeted by STING-mediated cell defense.
To compare tomographic (TUS) with radiographic (RUS) union scores in nailed shaft fractures during normal healing and in non-unions.
Two radiologists blinded to fracture age separately determined RUS and TUS in nailed femoral or tibial shaft fractures by analyzing the radiographic and CT examinations obtained in 47 patients during normal healing (early fracture group; 24 study participants, 17 men,19 tibias, mean fracture-CT delay 109 ± 57 days [42-204 days]) and in surgically proven non-united fractures (late fracture group, 23 patients, 14 men, 12 tibias, mean fracture-CT delay 565 ± 519 days[180-1983 days]). In both study groups, we determined the inter- and intra-observer agreement of RUS and TUS and compared TUS with RUS.
Intra- and inter-observer agreement of RUS and TUS was very good in the early fracture group and good in the late fracture group for both readers. TUS correlated with RUS substantially in the early fracture group and only weakly in the late fracture group. TUS was statistically significantly lower than RUS in study participants with RUS ≥ 8 or 9 for R2 only and ≥ 10 for both readers in the early fracture group and in patients with RUS ≥ 8, 9 or 10 in the late fracture group for both readers.
RUS and TUS of nailed shaft fractures during normal healing or in non-unions are both feasible and reproducible. They yield similar values in fractures with no or limited callus. TUS yields lower values than RUS in fractures with callus.
