PURPOSE The authors have previously shown the feasibility of using an artificial neural network (ANN) to eliminate the volume average effect (VAE) of scanning ionization chambers (ICs). The purpose of this work was to evaluate the method when applied to beams of different energies (6 and 10 MV) and modalities [flattened (FF) vs unflattened (FFF)], measured with ICs of various sizes. METHODS The three-layer ANN extracted data from transverse photon beam profiles using a sliding window, and output deconvolved value corresponding to the location at the center of the window. Beam profiles of seven fields ranging from 2 × 2 to 10 × 10 cm2 at four depths (1.5, 5, 10 and 20 cm) were measured with three ICs (CC04, CC13, and FC65-P) and an EDGE diode detector for 6 MV FF and FFF. Similar data for the 10 MV FF beam was also collected with CC13 and EDGE. The EDGE-measured profiles were used as reference data to train and test the ANNs. Separate ANNs were trained by using the data of each beam energy and modality. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the usefulness and safety of personalized application of different iodine concentrations of contrast media in coronary computed tomographic (CT) angiography with a 2nd dual-source CT scanner in eliminating differences in coronary contrast enhancement based on a BSA-adapted injection protocol of contrast media. A total of 270 enrolled participants were randomly assigned to three groups ioversol 320, ioversol 350 and iopromide 370 (n = 90 per group). The three groups were administered contrast media at a BSA-adjusted volume and flow rate with a fixed injection time of 15 seconds, and they subsequently received a 30-mL saline flush. All patients were scanned with a prospective electrocardiogram-gated protocol in a craniocaudal direction using a second-generation 128-slice dual-source CT system. The three iodinated contrast media used in coronary CT angiography exhibited similar diagnostic quality and safety. No significant differences were found in the contrast enhancement degrees, image quality scores, radiation doses and incidences of adverse effects among the three groups. The three contrast media used in coronary CT angiography with 320, 350 and 370 mg/mL iodine, respectively, have comparable diagnostic quality and safety. However, more large-scale, multinational, multi-centre and prospective trials are warranted. © 2020 The Authors. Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine published by Foundation for Cellular and Molecular Medicine and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been shown to be effective in increasing empathy in health professionals. Yet, more research is needed to analyse the specific influence of mindfulness exercises on biological variables involved in empathy, such as the biological system of oxytocin activity. In this study, we analyse the effects of a brief mindfulness session on positive and negative affect, state anxiety and salivary oxytocin (sOXT) in psychology students (N = 68). In the experimental group (n = 42), a mindfulness session was performed that included different guided meditation exercises. In the control group (n = 26), an emotion recognition exercise was carried out, along with a series of creative activities. Results showed that the mindfulness session was effective, because there was a significant reduction in negative affect (d = -.56, p  less then  .001) and state anxiety (d = -.54, p = .007) in the experimental group. Likewise, there was an increase in sOXT (d = .99, p  less then  .001) in this group, compared with the control group. Guided mindfulness meditation practice could be useful to reach an emotional and biological state that facilitates empathy. In this regard, the increase in sOXT after the mindfulness session adds further evidence about the biological mechanisms underlying the benefits of MBI on empathy. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Heterostructure engineering of the electrode materials, which is expected to accelerate the ion/electron transport rates driven by built-in internal electric field at the heterointerface, offers unprecedented promise in improving their cycling stability and rate performance. Herein, carbon nanotubes with Co 9 S 8 /ZnS heterostructures embedded in N-doped carbon framework (Co 9 S 8 /ZnS@NC) have been rationally designed via in-situ vapor chemical transformation strategy with the aid of thiophene, which not only acted as carbon source for the growth of carbon nanotubes but also as sulfur source for the sulfurization of metal Zn and Co. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows about 3.24 eV electrostatic potential difference between ZnS and Co 9 S 8 , which results in a strong electrostatic field across the interface that make electrons transfer from Co 9 S 8 to ZnS side. As expected, stable cycling performance with reversible capacity of 411.2 mAh g -1 at 1000 mA g -1 after 300 cycles, excellent rate capability (324 mAh g -1 at 2000 A g -1 ) and a high percentage of pseudocapacitance contribution (87.5% at 2.2 mv/s) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are achieved. This work provides a possible strategy for designing multicomponent heterostructures materials for application in energy storage and conversion fields. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.Root-associated microbiomes play significant roles in plant productivity, health and ecological services. However, our current understanding of the microbial assemblages in the rhizosphere and endosphere of herbage is still limited. To gain insights into these microbial assemblages, Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing was performed to investigate the characteristics of microbial communities of an herbage, Leymus chinensis. Hierarchical clustering analysis and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) results showed that microbial communities of the rhizosphere and endosphere samples were clearly distinguished. Rhizosphere soil communities showed a greater sensitivity than root endosphere communities using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe). Rhizosphere and endosphere communities performed their respective functions in the soil as a cohesive collective, and Rhizobiales were observed to function as generalists. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and variance partitioning analysis (VPA) results revealed that the contribution of the interaction between soil physicochemical parameters and soil enzymes was greater than their individual contributions. In summary, this study is the first to elucidate the microbial diversity and community structure of L. chinensis and compare the diversity and composition between rhizospheric and endosphere microbiomes. © 2020 The Authors. Microbial Biotechnology published by Society for Applied Microbiology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Fabricating highly efficient electrocatalysts for the electrochemical hydrogen generation is the top priority to relief global energy crisis and environmental contamination. Herein, a rational synthetic strategy is developed for constructing well-defined FeP-CoMoP hierarchical nanostructures (HNSs). In general terms, the self-supported Co nanorods (NRs) are grew on conductive carbon cloth and directly serve as the self-sacrificing template. After the solvothermal treatment, Co NRs are converted into well-ordered Co-Mo nanotubes (NTs). Subsequently, the small-sized Fe oxyhydroxide nanorods arrays are hydrothermally grew on the surface of Co-Mo NTs to form Fe-Co-Mo HNSs, which are then converted into FeP-CoMoP HNSs through a facile phosphorization treatment. FeP-CoMoP HNSs reveal super activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an ultralow cathodic overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 51 mV dec -1 . Moreover, FeP-CoMoP HNSs also display excellent electrochemical durability in alkaline media. click here First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the remarkable HER activitiy of FeP-CoMoP HNSs originates from the synergistic effect between FeP and CoMoP. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.AIMS Over the last 30 years, many medicine development programmes in acute and chronic heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) have failed, in contrast to those in HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). We explore how the neutral results in larger HF trials may be attributable to chance and/or the dilution of statistical power. METHODS AND RESULTS Using simulations, we examined the probability that a positive finding in a Phase 2 trial would result in the study of a truly effective medicine in a Phase 3 trial. We assessed the similarity of clinical trial and registry patient populations. We conducted a meta-analysis of paired Phase 2 and 3 trials in HFrEF and acute HF examining the associations of trial phase and size with placebo event rates and treatment effects for HF events and death. We estimated loss in trial power attributable to dilution with increasing trial size. Appropriately powered Phase 3 trials should have yielded ∼35% positive results. Patient populations in Phase 3 trials are similar to those in Phase 2 trials but both differ substantially from the populations of 'real-life' registries. We observed decreasing placebo event rates and smaller treatment effects with increasing trial size, especially for HF events (and less so for mortality). This was more pronounced in trials in acute HF patients. CONCLUSIONS The selection of more positive Phase 2 trials for further development does not explain the failure of HFpEF and acute HF medicine development. Increasing sample size may lead to reduced event rates and smaller treatment effects, resulting in a high rate of neutral Phase 3 trials. © 2020 European Society of Cardiology. Many hundreds of people have engaged with our collaborative studies using expert-elicitation approaches through facilitated discussions to dynamically inform decision-making within the field of biological invasions. We draw on our experiences to outline ways that allow the inclusion of multiple viewpoints within expert-elicitation while limiting or transparently documenting potential bias. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Patients with advanced breast cancer (BC) showed a higher incidence of regional and distant metastases. Sine oculis homeobox homolog 1 (SIX-1) has been confirmed to be a key tumorigenic and metastatic regulator in BC progression. Yet, molecular mechanisms behind SIX-1-induced BC metastases remain largely unknown. Here we found that SIX-1 was frequently up-regulated in BC and correlated with poor outcomes when tested in human BC tissue microarray. Then, we manipulated the expression of SIX-1 by via shRNA-mediated knockdown and lentivirus-mediated overexpression. Transwell assay in vitro and lung metastases model of nude mice in vivo showed that SIX-1 promoted BC cell invasion and migration in vitro, and facilitated metastases in vivo. Mechanistically, SIX-1 could promote the transcription of lncATB, which exerts critical pro-metastatic role in BC by directly binding to the miR-200 family, especially for miR-200c, to induce EMT and promote metastases. In conclusion, SIX-1 exerts its pro-metastatic role in BC through lncATB/miR-200s axis of EMT signalling pathway and could act as an important diagnostic marker as well as a significant therapeutic target for clinically advanced BC.
