Herein, a double consanguineous family of Moroccan origin with two affected siblings, with suspected brittle cornea syndrome, was recruited. African American youths in the United States grow up in a society with a long, pervasive, and living history of interpersonal and institutional racism. This study examined whether race-related stressors (awareness and experiences of racism) and resources for resilience (racial-ethnic connectedness and perceptions of embedded achievement) were associated with emotional health, conduct problems, and academic investment among African American early adolescents. Embedded achievement is the belief that achievement is a part of one's racial or ethnic group identity.

Participants were recruited from an urban school and youth club (N= 75, mean age= 11.6 years, 71% male participants). Structured interviews were administered to youths.

Adjusting for age and sex, racial-ethnic connectedness and embedded achievement were associated with fewer emotional problems and conduct problems. In addition, embedded achievement was associated with greater academic investment. Racial-ethnic connectedness modified associations bd adversity of racism. Health professionals can advocate for policies and practices to combat racism and to foster racial pride and connectedness among youths of color.SARS-CoV-2 virus infects children but, contrary to other respiratory viruses, children tend to be asymptomatic or to have less symptoms than adults and are rarely the index case in household transmission chains. The aim of this study was to compare the relative viral loads in nasopharyngeal samples from children aged 0 to 17 years with those of an adult population. We selected 126 positive nasopharyngeal samples from children. Relative viral loads were measured by RT-PCR and the comparative ∆Ct method using primers and probes targeting the viral gene E and the human RNAseP. Relative viral loads were significantly lower in the children population than in the adult one.
Sars-Cov-2 epidemic in Italy caused one of the greatest 2020 European outbreaks, with suspension of elective bariatric/metabolic surgery (BMS). From May 2020 a significant decline of the epidemic has been observed (phase 2); National Health Service protocols permitted elective BMS' resumption. A new, more severe COVID-19 surge, the "second wave", started on October 2020 (phase 3).

The primary end point was to analyze the outcomes of any Sars-Cov-2 infection and related morbidity/mortality within 30 POD after laparoscopic BMS during phase 2-3; secondary end points were readmission and reoperation rates.

The induction of immunogenic cell death (ICD) is one of the possible mechanisms behind this event, but the protocol conditions necessary for a robust induction of ICD by PDT have not been defined. In this work, the immunogenicity of B16F10 melanoma cells treated with different PDT protocols was investigated. The exposure of damage-associated molecules (DAMPs), namely HMGB1, calreticulin and ATP, a hallmark of ICD, and the presence of apoptotic and necrotic cells were assessed after the application of PDT mediated by different concentrations of aluminum-phthalocyanine (AlPcNE) in vitro. Furthermore, the in vivo immunogenicity of PDT-treated B16F10 cells was investigated with an immunization-challenge model in C57BL/6 mice. The percentage of dead cells was directly proportional to the concentration of AlPcNE. The IC50, IC70 and IC90 concentrations of AlPcNE induced the exposure of DAMPs by B16F10 cells after PDT. In the in vivo model, however, only the B16F10 cells treated with PDT-AlPcNE at the IC50 or IC70 rendered C57BL/6 significantly more resistant to a subsequent challenge with viable B16F10 cells. Thus, the induction of ICD in B16F10 cells by PDT occurs only at a specific range of AlPcNE concentrations.
Different therapies have been used for dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS) with poor results. Topical 5-aminolaevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) is effective for many inflammatory skin diseases.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fire micro-needling plus 5% ALA-PDT on DCS.

Forty-two male DCS patients were enrolled and treated by four sessions of fire micro-needling plus 5% ALA-PDT (occlusion time 3h, 100mW/cm
for 20-32min, 633±10nm LED) with an interval of 1-2 weeks. The reduction of lesions was evaluated at each follow-up visit. The patients` symptoms were evaluated by Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). All of the side effects were recorded.

Forty-one DCS patients finished the treatments and the marked effective rate (MER) reached 65.85%. Ten patients (24.39%) were cured and 17 patients (41.46%) achieved excellent improvement. The median of lesion numbers decreased significantly from 25 to 7 (p<0.001) with DLQI from 13 to 2 (p<0.001). Although all the ten cured patients had a relapse during the 12-month follow-up, 5/10 patients had a remission of more than 6 months. All the patients tolerated PDT well with mild adverse effects.

Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNPs) were reported as an agent that may enhance the effectiveness of Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT). This in vitro study evaluates the effect of SeNPs on the efficacy of Methylene Blue (MB)-induced PACT against the biofilm formated in 96-well plates and the dentine tubule biofilm of Enterococcus faecalis.

Chitosan coated SeNPs were synthesized using chemical reduction method and were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Twenty-four-hour biofilms of E. faecalis were developed on 96-well plates and treated with SeNPs, MB, and Light-Emitting Diode (LED). Also, three-week biofilms of E. faecalis were formed on 67 specimens of dentinal tubules, and the antibacterial effects of MB+SeNPs on these biofilms were studied.

The average hydrodynamic diameter of SeNPs was 80/3nm according to DLS measurement. The combined use of MB and SeNPs significantly reduced Colony-Forming Units (CFUs) of one-day-old E. faecalis biofilms in comparison with the control group (P value < 0.05). Besides, combination therapy had the most antibacterial effect on root canal E. faecalis biofilms at both 200 and 400µm depths of dentine tubules (P value < 0.001). Of note, about 50% of human fibroblast cells survived at a concentration of 128µg/ml of SeNPs, compared to the control group.

The results demonstrated that the photodynamic therapy modified by SeNPs could be an effective disinfection alternative to the destruction of E. faecalis biofilms and root canal treatment.

Daylight photodynamic therapy (DL-PDT) has similar efficacy to conventional photodynamic therapy in treating actinic keratosis (AKs). Good clinical outcomes have been reported when associated with physical methods such as microneedles, but a comparison of different methods and histologic studies is lacking.

To evaluate clinical and histologic modifications induced by standard DL-PDT and compare with DL-PDT associated with physical methods in treating skin field cancerization of the face.

Forty patients with photodamaged skin and at least one AK lesion on the face were randomly distributed into four groups, ten patients in each (I Standard DL-PDT; II DL-PDT+microneedles; III DL-PDT+CO2 laser; IV DL-PDT+microdermabrasion) and underwent two DL-PDT sessions with methyl aminolevulinate cream and 2-hour daylight exposure. Skin biopsies were performed on all patients before and 3 months after. All fragments were stained using the hematoxylin-eosin, orcein, and picrosirius.

All 40 patients completed the study.
