Younger people with cancer were more likely to allege discrimination in the areas of promotion, training, reinstatement, and referrals to other employers. They were less likely to allege discrimination in the area of benefits. The younger group was also significantly less likely than the older group to find that EEOC investigations of their allegations resulted in merit-based case resolutions, that is, discrimination had indeed occurred.

Psychosocial programs and vocational programming assisting young adults with career development should focus on the types of discrimination that young adults experience, which is unique compared with older adult cancer survivors.In recent years, the preference for using lead-free radiation protection shields has increased because of concerns regarding lead poisoning and leakage. In medical and research laboratories, glass shields are preferred because of their transparency. In this study, various glass shields were examined and compared based on the international standards. One commercially available lead-based shield, four recently studied shields, and three new lead-free shields were considered, and their shielding factors were calculated. We presented three glasses based on borate, phosphate, and silicate compounds, which were named Ir1, Ir2, and Ir3, respectively. Based on the International Electrotechnical Commission standard (IEC 61331), the air-kerma ratios (attenuation ratios) and lead equivalent values were derived using Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) calculations, and mass attenuation coefficients and effective atomic numbers (Zeff) of all the shields were obtained from XCOM database, in the diagnostic X-ray energy range of 40-120 keV. In addition, some measurements were performed for the reference (lead-based) glass to validate the simulations. The above-mentioned factors for silicate-bismuth-based (Ir3) and borosilicate-barium-based (Tu) glasses were found to be higher than the others and comparable to those of commercially available lead-based glass. In conclusion, Ir3 and Tu glasses were found to be the preferred lead-free transparent shields in the diagnostic X-ray energy range.Phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate-dependent Rac exchanger (P-Rex) proteins control many fundamental cellular functions including cell migration, actin cytoskeletal rearrangement and adhesion in many cancers. Here, OSCC tissue microarrays were used to verify the expression levels of P-Rex1, coinhibitory immune checkpoints and tumor associated macrophage (TAM) markers, and to analyze the relationship between PREX1 expression levels and clinicopathological characteristics in OSCC. The study found that P-Rex1 expression was elevated in OSCC compared to dysplasia and normal mucosa (P less then 0.0001). In addition, patients who expressed high PREX1 had a poorer prognosis than those who expressed low PREX1 (P = 0.0070). Furthermore, positive correlations were found between P-Rex1 expression and the immune checkpoints PD-L1, Galectin-9 and B7-H4, and the TAM markers CD68, CD206 and CD163. Participants were 576 7th grade students (Mage = 11.8; 51% boys; 39% Hispanic, 31% White, 20% Black) from a rural county in the southeastern U.S. All participants received the TINAD program and completed pretest and immediate posttest assessments. The program was school-based and implemented in collaboration with school teachers and administrators. Over 91% of all eligible students in the school district participated in the TINAD program. Most participants found the program acceptable-over 83% of students liked the program. Approximately 9% of participants reported prior misuse of prescription opioids. After participating in TINAD, students self-reported higher knowledge and self-efficacy as well as safer attitudes. However, there was no change in intentions to misuse opioids in the future. Effects of the program were consistent across gender, socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and previous opioid misuse. TINAD is acceptable and shows promise for improving opioid-related cognitions. However, more rigorous experimental and longitudinal research is needed to understand whether TINAD reduces opioid misuse over time. Given the limited research on adolescent opioid misuse prevention, this study lays the ground work for future randomized control trials.Indoor air pollutants contribute to respiratory infections and asthma exacerbations in children. Rural Alaska Native children experience some of the highest U.S. rates of respiratory hospitalizations, which are associated with lack of in-home running water, household crowding, and woodstove use. In our previous study, in-home education and modifications reduced respiratory symptoms, and medical visits. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of providing in-hospital environmental health consults for parents/guardians of children less then 5 years old hospitalized at the Alaska Native Medical Center with respiratory infections or asthma. Environmental health specialists conducted 92 in-hospital consults and mailed Healthy Homes Toolkits to households. Local housing authorities completed low-cost home modifications in 47 eligible households. Participants reported changes in household behaviors that were specifically addressed in the consult or included in the Toolkit (e.g. allergen-impermeable pillow covers). Reported respiratory symptoms were decreased at the 6-month follow-up. Over a 2 year period the median overall medical costs for respiratory illness in study children were $70,500. Children with in-home piped water had half the daily overall medical costs than children without in-home piped water ($74 compared to $144). In this study, we demonstrate that it is feasible to provide environmental consults, mail Toolkits, and arrange home modifications to the homes of children hospitalized with respiratory illness. These findings, along with the high costs of medical care for these children, suggest in-hospital environmental health consults are a cost-effective intervention.
Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) constitute around 8% of the human genome and have important roles in human health and disease, including cancers. Previous studies showed that HERV envelope (Env) proteins are highly expressed in cancer tissues and co-related with cancer progression. KAP1 has been reported to play a key role in regulating retrotransposons, including HERV-K, through epigenetic silencing.
The relationship between KAP-1 and HERV Envs expressions was analyzed only in tumor cell lines and has not yet been studied in cancer tissues. In this study, we analyzed the expression patterns and relationship between KAP1 and HERV Env proteins in ovarian cancer tissues.
The expression patterns of KAP-1 and HERV Env proteins, including HERV-K and HERV-R, were analyzed in ovarian cancer tissue microarrays that contained 80 surgical specimens, including normal ovary and malignant ovarian cancers.

Tendon heals slowly after injuries. The results of conservative treatments and surgery are not satisfactory with high re-injury rate and scar tissue formation. The application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to the injured tendons was reported to promote tendon repair. Recent studies have suggested that MSCs supported tendon repair via the secretion of paracrine factors. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a heterogeneous group of cell-derived membranous structures that are produced and secreted by most eukaryotic cells. They carry a plethora of proteins, lipids, microRNA and mRNA which reprogram the recipient cells and are involved in multiple physiological and pathological processes. EVs were shown to promote tissue repair and mediate the healing effects of MSCs. In this review, I aim to review the recent literature on the promotion of tendon repair using EVs-derived from MSCs (MSC-EVs). The mechanisms underlying these actions are also reviewed and future research directions are discussed. Better understanding of the roles of MSC-EVs in tendon repair would offer a new treatment strategy to circumvent this devastating soft tissue disorder. Graphical Abstract.

Sex-biased dispersal has an effect on strong and long-lasting social bonding between mothers and their philopatric offspring. Nepotistic relationships are often seen in species with male-biased dispersal but less frequently in species with female-biased dispersal. Bonobos are unique among female-biased dispersal primates in that the females are codominant with males, exert influence on the mating opportunities of their mature sons, and tolerate each other regardless of relatedness. Few studies on bonobos have examined sex differences in social relationships between juveniles and their mothers, and how this relates to mother-son and female-female cooperative relationships amongst adults. We investigated whether the association index of juveniles with their mothers changed with age depending on the sex of the juveniles in parties of bonobos at Wamba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We found that female bonobos had decreased party associations with their mothers prior to their emigration from the natal group, while male bonobos maintained relatively high party associations with their mothers.
