3 Wheeled Buggies
A 3-wheel buggy is utilized for off-road trails and to tackle terrain from rough roads or woodland tracks. They are also more easy to maneuver up and down kerbs than 4-wheel models.
MadeForMums reviews editor Kath tried one of these three-wheelers with her newborn and 3 year old daughter, putting it through its paces on road and on a rocky surface. You can read her full review here.
Stability
With four wheels and a centre of gravity that's balanced by weight of your child in the seat, 4-wheel buggies are generally thought to be more stable than triwheelers. However, that doesn't mean a three-wheel buggy isn't worth a look, since some of these models are designed to withstand anything from rough terrain to busy high streets.
For a buggy that's easy to control and won't be a problem on muddy roads, opt for a model with large rear wheels and an adjustable front wheel that locks. These all-terrain buggies often have pneumatic tyres as well, which are excellent for handling uneven surfaces and can even be used on sandy beaches or tracks in woodland.
They are also excellent buggies to run with because they provide great stability in rough terrain, and can aid you in staying with your running partner. They can also go up and down steep kerbs, and many of them come with spring suspension built-in so that your baby will have an enjoyable ride.
The one thing that can make a pushchair with three wheels difficult to maneuver is the broad frame, which makes it harder to fit through tight spaces and narrow doors than a 4-wheeler. However, some manufacturers have tackled this issue by implementing a clever design that makes the wheels flip up when they are not being used, which reduces their overall size and helps you get through doors with ease.
You'll also have to consider whether your buggy is suitable for your baby from birth or if you're thinking of using it in conjunction with an infant car seat or carry cot. Find out if the buggy comes with the ability to lie flat, and if it is compatible with a second seat and buggy boards if you plan to take your toddler along. A majority of 3-wheelers can fold flat and be put up in a upright position. This is a great option if you only have a small boot space or a small amount of storage space at home. Some will require you to take out the front wheel prior to folding if you want it to fit in even more compact spaces.
Manoeuvrability
Three-wheeled buggies typically provide better maneuverability than four-wheeled pushchairs. They often have a swivelling front wheel that allows you to change direction quickly and steer with just one hand. Some models have wheels that lock to give you stability on more rough terrain. Some models can be used with an additional seat or buggy board in case you're planning to grow your family.
If you intend to take your three-wheeled buggies off the paved roads it is recommended to choose an option that has pneumatic tyres. They are able to handle the most difficult terrain. These tyres may require regular pumping but they'll be more durable than solid tyres and more likely to be puncture-proof. You should look for one with an swiveling front wheel that can be locked to assist you on difficult surfaces.
Having a single front wheel could be a reason that three-wheelers tend to be more bulkier than buggies with four wheels when folded. Be sure that the model you pick can fit in the boot of your car and can be set up upright if required. Some models are able to be folded with just one hand and stand on their own when collapsed. This can save space in smaller car boots.
A quality three-wheel pushchair will take on any terrain from busy roads to forest tracks. It's important to think about what you'll be using it for every day. If you're planning to run the school run, it must be able to handle steep slopes and kerbs. If you'll be running with it, ensure it has an adjustable swivelling'stretch' lockable front wheel to keep the ride steady.
MFM reviewer Kath found her three-wheeled buggy to be able to perform well with the countryside and urban walks. Kath noted that it was able to negotiate rocky paths, cobbles, and bumpy pavements with ease and was comfortable while jogging. It's also a great option for day trips because it offers plenty of storage space. It comes with a large, spacious, zip-top covered basket and an extendable, 50+ UV hood. It is also able to be adapted to fit babies as young as an adjustable seat that can be sat on or a carry cot, in addition to being compatible with a variety of popular second-seats and buggy boards.
Fabric Sling Seat
The key difference between a fabric sling and modular seat is that the fabric sling fits comfortably inside the frame of the buggy instead of sitting on top like a modular seat. This makes it easier to maintain an comfortable and ergonomically-correct position for the baby, which results in a lower center of gravity at just the right height. This leads to a more comfortable push, a more light curb-pop (you do not have to exert as much effort and weight to lift the buggy off the curb) and improved balance and stability.
The sling fabrics used in these types of buggy seats are very hard-wearing and easy to clean. These fabrics were designed specifically for sling chairs and are extremely UV-resistant and air-tight. They also have an excellent durability and are easy to clean with water and soap.
If you're a jogger or enjoy a bit of off-roading, an all terrain 3 wheeler will be more suitable than a buggy with four wheels. These styles have a wider base, are more stable and utilize air-filled tyres for smooth and easy movement on rough terrain.
Maxi-Cosi is a company known for its car seats, has added a new 3-wheeler called the Stella to its product line. This all-terrain buggy boasts an enormous huge and spacious travel system seat unit that can be used as a world facing or parent facing and reclines flat using an improved 5-point safety harness. It can be used with a car seat or carrycot starting at birth. It also has an ample shopping basket.
For the most discerning buggy owners this luxury 3 wheeler is as beautiful to behold as it is enjoyable to use. The sleek frame features a stunning pewter finish with touches of burnished aluminium. It is a real eye-catching piece. This is a great option for active parents. It features a spacious, padded seat which can be positioned either with the child or in a world-facing position. It also comes with an upgraded 5-point harness as well as a complete set of rain covers.
Modular Seat
Modular seating can be set up in various ways to accommodate different seating requirements. Modular seating can be easily adjusted to create a relaxing setting for watching movies, or a spacious arrangement for entertaining guests. Many modular seating systems come with cushion covers that can be removed which make it easier to clean spills and stain.
Modular Seating can be designed to blend with existing decor or be a standout as an accent piece. A variety of fabrics, colors and shape options ensures that you can choose a modular seating solution that suits your style. Many functional features are offered in modular seating, like hidden storage compartments that allow an easy organization and cleaning of living spaces.
3-wheel buggies are particularly good for off-road and all-terrain adventures because they offer more stability than 4-wheel strollers. The large, extremely maneuverable front wheel allows for a quick and smooth movement, whereas the tyres are usually air-filled and feature suspension, allowing for a smooth ride on the most difficult trails and roads. The wheels are not as close to the ground on these pushchairs as they are on four wheeled pushchairs. This makes them great for walking uphill.
Often, 3-wheel prams are a favourite for parents who enjoy running and jogging with their child because they offer superior agility and are more streamlined than their 4-wheel counterparts. The GB Upp XL, for instance, is a sleek burnished aluminium frame with a fast, one-handed fold and rear-facing and forward-facing seats. The Babyzen Yoyo, on the other hand, comes with an all-black frame that comes with an infant carrycot that can be positioned in a full lie-flat position, and has tyres that are air-filled.
Mountain Buggy Sport verso is another fantastic all-terrain choice. 3 wheeler pushchair 's incredibly lightweight and highly maneuverable. It's also incredibly fashionable. This buggy will last you from birth, with a carrycot included, to toddlerhood, with the seat that is modular. All this is within the footprint of one buggy.
Duet(tm) is an side-by-side buggy that's compact enough to be used in urban areas yet also creative and controlled. It has a unique fabric seat that is set snugly within the frame at the perfect height for weight distribution. This makes it easy crossing of kerbs and for navigating cities and neighborhoods.
