Having a child with a chronic illness is a source of stress for the whole family, especially the primary caregiver. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between caregiver burden and both the caregiver's and child's psychological symptoms in a cohort of children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Thirty-four patients (aged 9-18years) with childhood-onset SLE and their caregivers participated in this study. The control group was composed of healthy children and their caregivers. Questionnaires were used to evaluate caregiver burden and the psychological status of parents and children and adolescents with and without SLE.

No significant difference was found between the study and control groups for caregiver burden, anxiety and depression in parents, and psychological status in children. Caregiver burden was positively correlated with parent's depression, anxiety, and behavioral and peer problems of the children, and it was negatively correlated with the children's prosocial behaviors negatively correlated with child's prosocial behaviors.Phonological awareness is one of the most important predictors of reading. However, there is still controversy concerning its dimensionality. This study evaluated the dimensionality of phonological awareness among Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children. A total of 212 children performed six phonological awareness tasks in the last year of kindergarten. Of those children, 177 performed the same tasks when they were in the first grade. The phonological awareness measures differed in both their cognitive demand (detection, blending, segmentation, and elision) and the phonological unit involved (rhyme, syllable, and phoneme). Confirmatory factor analyzes were employed to test several models of phonological awareness dimensionality. The results indicated that the best model was an oblique model of phonological units with two correlated latent factors phonemic awareness and supraphonemic awareness. This model presented the best fit to the data both in kindergarten and in the first grade. In addition, supraphonemic awareness in the kindergarten predicted phoneme awareness in the first grade; however, phonemic awareness in the kindergarten did not predict supraphonemic awareness in the first grade. These results are compatible with phonological awareness developing from larger phonological units (e.g., syllables) to small phonological units (e.g., phonemes) and the reciprocal relationship between phonological awareness and reading. From a theoretical point of view, these results also suggest that phonological awareness is a one-dimensional construct that can be evaluated by tests employing different phonological units (e.g., syllables, rhymes, phonemes).Locomotor performance and skeletal muscle contraction are critical for animals and are susceptible to changes in the external thermal environment, especially for ectotherms. Phrynocephalus erythrurus, which is endemic to the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, is known for living at the highest elevation among all reptiles in the world (4500-5300 m). In this study, which compares P. erythrurus with the lowland Phrynocephalus przewalskii, we evaluated the locomotor performance at different body temperatures, the effects of temperature and oxygen partial pressure (PO2) on the contractile properties of iliofibularis (IF) muscle in vitro, ATPase activity of IF muscle at different temperatures, and the fiber types of IF muscle. Lowland P. przewalskii runs significantly faster than highland P. erythrurus at all test body temperatures. Almost all contractile properties of the IF muscle of P. przewalskii were better than that of P. erythrurus under all test temperatures and PO2. However, P. erythrurus could achieve both optimal isometric (e.g., dPo/dt) and optimal isotonic (e.g., Vmax) contraction at a lower temperature compared with P. przewalskii. Multi-factor analysis further revealed that temperature has a significant effect on the contractile properties of IF muscle for both species. Although the proportion of fibers types and ATPase activities of IF muscle have no significant interspecies difference, the changing pattern of ATPase activities with temperature is consistent with certain contractile properties and locomotor performance. The interspecies differences in locomotor ability and contractile properties of skeletal muscle in high- and low-altitude lizards may be the results of long-term adaptation to the local environment.
Medial menisco-capsular separations (ramp lesions) are typically found in association with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency. They are frequently missed preoperatively due to low MRI sensitivity. The purpose of this article was to describe demographic and anatomical risk factors for ramp lesions, and to identify concomitant lesions and define their characteristics to improve diagnosis of ramp lesions on MRI.

Patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction between September 2015 and April 2019 were included in this study. The presence/absence of ramp lesions was recorded in preoperative MRIs and at surgery. Patients' characteristics and clinical findings, concomitant injuries on MRI and the posterior tibial slope were evaluated.

One hundred patients (80 male, 20 female) with a mean age of 22.3 ± 4.9yearsmet the inclusion criteria. The incidence of ramp lesions diagnosed at surgery was 16%. Ramp lesions were strongly associated with injuries to the deep MCL (dMCL, p < 0p lesions facilitate the diagnosis of a ramp lesion preoperatively and should raise surgeons' suspicion of this important lesion.

The mechanisms of action and disease-modifying potential of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection for osteoarthritis (OA) treatment are still not fully established. The aim of this systematic review of preclinical evidence was to determine if PRP injections can induce disease-modifying effects in OA joints.

A systematic review was performed on animal studies evaluating intra-articular PRP injections as treatment for OA joints. A synthesis of the results was performed investigating the disease-modifying effects of PRP by evaluating studies that compared PRP with OA controls or other injectable products, different PRP formulations or injection intervals, and the combination of PRP with other products. The risk of bias was assessed according to the SYRCLE's tool.

Forty-four articles were included, for a total of 1251 animals. The publication trend remarkably increased over time. PRP injections showed clinical effects in 80% and disease-modifying effects in 68% of the studies, attenuating cartilage damage progression and reducing synovial inflammation, coupled with changes in biomarker levels. Evidence is limited on the best PRP formulation, injection intervals, and synergistic effect with other injectables. The risk of bias was low in 40%, unclear in 56%, and high in 4% of items.

Intra-articular PRP injections showed disease-modifying effects in most studies, both at the cartilage and synovial level. These findings in animal OA models can play a crucial role in understanding mechanism of action and structural effects of this biological approach. Nevertheless, the overall low quality of the published studies warrants further preclinical studies to confirm the positive findings, as well as high-level human trials to demonstrate if these results translate into disease-modifying effects when PRP is used in the clinical practice to treat OA.

The impact of tumor burden score (TBS) on conditional survival (CS) among patients undergoing curative-intent resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been examined to date.

Patients who underwent liver resection of HCC between 2000 and 2017 were identified from a multi-institutional database. selleck chemicals The impact of TBS and other clinicopathologic factors on 3-year conditional survival (CS
) was examined.

Among 1,040 patients, 263 (25.3%) patients had low TBS, 668 (64.2%) had medium TBS and 109 (10.5%) had high TBS. TBS was strongly associated with OS; 5-year OS was 39.0% among patients with high TBS compared with 61.1% and 79.4% among patients with medium and low TBS, respectively (p < 0.001). While actuarial survival decreased as time elapsed from resection, CS increased over time irrespective of TBS. The largest differences between 3-year actuarial survival and CS
were noted among patients with high TBS (5-years postoperatively; CS
78.7% vs. 3-year actuarial survival 30.7%). The effect of adverse clinicopathologic factors including high TBS, poor/undifferentiated tumor grade, microvascular invasion, liver capsule involvement, and positive margins on prognosis decreased over time.

CS rates among patients who underwent resection for HCC increased as patients survived additional years, irrespective of TBS. CS estimates can be used to provide important dynamic information relative to the changing survival probability after resection of HCC.

Genome sequence analysis of Rhizobium strain AQ_MP unraveled the algal lytic features and toxin degradative pathways in it. Functional genes of CAZymes such as glycosyltransferases (GT), glycoside hydrolases (GH), polysaccharide lyases (PL) which supports algal polysaccharide degradation (lysis) were present in Rhizobium strain AQ_MP. Genome analysis also clarified the presence of the glutathione metabolic pathway, which is the biological detoxification pathway responsible for toxin degradation. The conserved region mlrC, a microcystin toxin-degrading gene was also annotated in the genome. The study illustrated that Rhizobium strain AQ_MP harbored a wide range of mechanisms for the lysis of Microcystis aeruginosa cells and its toxin degradation. These 3D models described range from single to multiple cell type containing cultures with diverse applications from establishing patient-specific liver cells to modeling of chronic liver diseases and regenerative therapy.
