Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy

Pragmatism is a philosophy that focuses on experience and context. It may not have a clear ethical framework or a set of fundamental principles. This could lead to the loss of idealistic goals and a shift in direction.

Contrary to deflationary theories, pragmatic theories do not reject the notion that statements are correlated to actual states of affairs. They simply explain the role that truth plays in our daily activities.

The word pragmatic is used to refer to people or things that are practical, logical and sensible. Another approach that is inspired by Rorty and his followers, focuses on the relatively mundane functions of truth, namely its ability to generalize, recommend, and caution--and is less concerned with the full-blown theory of truth.

The primary flaw in this neo-pragmatic approach to truth is that it stray with relativism, since the notion of "truth" is a concept with such a long and rich tradition that it seems unlikely that it can be reduced to the mundane applications that pragmatists assign it. In addition, pragmatism seems to dismiss the existence of truth in its metaphysical aspect. This is evident in the fact that pragmatists such as Brandom (who is owed an obligation to Peirce and James) are generally silent on questions of metaphysics in Dewey's vast writings, whereas his works have just one reference to the issue of truth.

Pragmatism is a philosophy that aims to provide an alternative to the continental and analytic tradition of philosophy. Its first generation was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James together with their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1855-1916). These classical pragmatists emphasized the importance of inquiry and meaning and the nature of truth. Their influence was felt by many influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied the ideas to education and other dimensions of social development, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who established social work.

In recent years an emerging generation has given pragmatism an expanded forum for discussion. Although they differ from the classical pragmatists, many of these neo-pragmatists believe themselves to be part of the same tradition. Their most prominent model is Robert Brandom, whose work focuses on semantics and the philosophy of language however, he also draws inspiration from the philosophy of Peirce and James.

One of the major distinctions between the classical pragmatists and the neo-pragmatists is their understanding of what it takes for an idea to be true. The classical pragmatists focused on a concept called 'truth-functionality,' which states that an idea is genuinely true if it is useful in practice. Neo-pragmatists concentrate on the notion of "ideal justified assertionibility," which states that an idea is truly true if it is justified to a specific audience in a certain way.

This viewpoint is not without its problems. One of the most common complaints is that it could be used to support all kinds of absurd and illogical theories.
