Microbial production of 2-butanol has also been attempted, however, with little success as witnessed by the low titers and yields reported. Two important reasons for this, are the growth-hampering effect of 2-butanol on microorganisms, and challenges associated with one of the key enzymes involved in its production, namely diol dehydratase. Results We attempt to link the metabolism of an engineered Lactococcus lactis strain, which possesses all enzyme activities required for fermentative production of 2-butanol from glucose, except for diol dehydratase, which acts on meso-2,3-butanediol (mBDO), with that of a Lactobacillus brevis strain which expresses a functional dehydratase natively. We demonstrate growth-coupled production of 2-butanol by the engineered L. lactis strain, when co-cultured with L. brevis. After fine-tuning the co-culture setup, a titer of 80 mM (5.9 g/L) 2-butanol, with a high yield of 0.58 mol/mol is achieved. Conclusions Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to link the metabolism of two bacteria to achieve redox-balanced production of 2-butanol. Using a simple co-cultivation setup, we achieved the highest titer and yield from glucose in a single fermentation step ever reported. The data highlight the potential that lies in harnessing microbial synergies for producing valuable compounds. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Biological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass is significantly hindered by feedstock recalcitrance, which is typically assessed through an enzymatic digestion assay, often preceded by a thermal and/or chemical pretreatment. Here, we assay 17 lines of unpretreated transgenic black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) utilizing a lignocellulose-degrading, metabolically engineered bacterium, Caldicellulosiruptor bescii. The poplar lines were assessed by incubation with an engineered C. bescii strain that solubilized and converted the hexose and pentose carbohydrates to ethanol and acetate. The resulting fermentation titer and biomass solubilization were then utilized as a measure of biomass recalcitrance and compared to data previously reported on the transgenic poplar samples. Results Of the 17 transgenic poplar lines examined with C. bescii, a wide variation in solubilization and fermentation titer was observed. While the wild type poplar control demonstrated relatively high recalcitrance with a totaeved without compromising fitness of the tree. © The Author(s) 2020.Background Non-destructive high-throughput plant phenotyping is becoming increasingly used and various methods for growth analysis have been proposed. Traditional longitudinal or repeated measures analyses that model growth using statistical models are common. However, often the variation in the data is inappropriately modelled, in part because the required models are complicated and difficult to fit. We provide a novel, computationally efficient technique that is based on smoothing and extraction of traits (SET), which we compare with the alternative traditional longitudinal analysis methods. Results The SET-based and longitudinal analyses were applied to a tomato experiment to investigate the effects on plant growth of zinc (Zn) addition and growing plants in soil inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Conclusions from the SET-based and longitudinal analyses are similar, although the former analysis results in more significant differences. They showed that added Zn had little effect on plants gtrated that the oft-omitted unequal variances and autocorrelation may be required for a valid longitudinal analysis. With respect to the separate issue of the subjective choice of mathematical growth functions or splines to characterize growth, it is recommended that, for both SET-based and longitudinal analyses, an evidence-based procedure is adopted. © The Author(s) 2020.Background In a context of the potential epidemic nature of both diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression had negative effects in cases of disability and mortality. Coexisting depression had been linked to morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to identify psychosocial and clinical factors associated to develop depression symptoms in diabetes patients. Methods A systematic institution based cross-sectional study design was conducted from 1st March to 8th April 2016 among adult diabetes patent. Depression status was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data were analyzed by logistic regression and at P  less then  0.05 with 95% CI was considered statistically significant. Result A total of 416 patients were included in this studied. Based on PHQ-9, self- reported depression symptom was 29.3% [95% CI 25.2, 33.4]. In the performed statistical evaluation, patients whose age was between 45 and 54 years old (AOR = 3.88; 95% CI 1.36, 11.08); being female (AOR = 2.43; 95% CI 1.29, 4.58); who has poor social support (AOR = 6.08; 95% CI 2.98, 12.40); and who has high fear of kidney problems secondary to DM (AOR = 6.12; 95% CI 1.75, 21.23) were statistically associated with depressive symptoms in diabetes patients. Conclusion This study demonstrated that complication fears, social support, being female and sexual dysfunction were found significantly associated with co-morbid depression in diabetes. Therefore, availed a social network of family and friends; providing diabetes education to address the patient's fear of complications; and considered a sexual function is an integral part of overall health in diabetic patients. © The Author(s) 2020.
