The aim of this paper is to assess the readiness of the economies belonging to the European Union (EU) to migrate from the actual linear economy to a circular one through a methodology which incorporates economic, social and environmental factors and delivers a composite index. This index is based on a ready to use original unified framework, based on the three pillars of the sustainable development - economic, social and environmental, each founded on two relevant factors. The index is useful for the diagnosis of current situation and allows the identification of the best EU players in terms of readiness of EU nations to pass to a sustainable circular economy. The findings of this paper add value to the current knowledge on circular economy and portray the circularity as being grounded on a safe, rational and socially just transformation. The results of this paper provide a tool that may be used by national and European decision makers/regulators to identify the best/worst practices, which can be replicated/addressed in order to accelerate the transition of the EU to circularity. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in aquatic environments is an important cycled pool of organic matter on the Earth. Satellite remote sensing provides a useful tool to determine spatiotemporal distribution of water quality parameters. Previous DOC remote sensing studies in inland water suffered from either low spatial resolution or low temporal frequency. In this study, we evaluated the potential of jointly using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 with high spatial resolution to estimate DOC concentrations in Saginaw River plume regions of Lake Huron. Firstly, CDOM (colored dissolved organic matter) was estimated from images using the known models and then DOC can be derived in terms of the good correlations between DOC and CDOM. The results show that Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 had acceptable accuracy and good consistency in DOC estimation so that jointly using them can improve the observation frequency. In different seasons from 2013 to 2018, DOC was typically higher in spring and autumn but lower in summer. Monthly spatiotemporal variations of DOC in 2018 were also observed. The image-derived DOC spatiotemporal variations show that DOC was covaried with Saginaw River discharge (r = 0.82) and also weakly and negatively correlated with water temperature (r = -0.6). This study demonstrated that using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 together can offer the potential applications for monitoring DOC and water quality dynamic in complex inland water. This paper reports a comparative study on kinetics of organic matter expressed as BOD5 and nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands operated in Poland. Analyzed data were collected at eight wetland systems, composed of subsurface flow beds horizontal flow (HF) and vertical flow (VF), in different number and sequences. The analysis involved particularly mass removal rates (MRR) and first-order removal rate coefficients of BOD5 and total nitrogen (kA and kv for VF and HF filters, respectively, and k20 as a parameter averaged for a temperature of 20 °C). It was found that the higher the load of pollutants applied to the beds, the higher MRR values were obtained. The average k-rates in analyzed systems were mostly lower than those reported in the literature, especially in the case of total nitrogen. Its removal obtained in horizontal flow beds was kv = 0.002-0.042 d-1, while in vertical flow systems kA varied from 0.007 m d-1 to 0.0037 m d-1. According to data given by previous studies, first-order reaction rates for nitrogen removal varied in range from kv = 0.048 d-1 to kv = 0.19 d-1 and kA from 0.007 to 0.1 m d-1 in HF and VF beds, respectively. Regarding BOD5 shown in literature, removal rate kv for HF beds varied from 0.071 to 6.11 d-1, and kA for VF beds varied from 0.019 to 1.0 m d-1, while in this study lower k-rates were obtained kv = 0.005-0.085 d-1 and kA = 0.015-0.130 m d-1. Relatively long monitoring period, for some of constructed wetland up to 16 years, resulted in good data set and enables creation of the graphs, which could be helpful in evaluation and designing of constructed wetlands for PE bigger than 50, in moderate climate conditions.
