Inspired by the role of cell-surface glycoproteins as coreceptors for pathogens, we report the development of GlycoGrip a glycopolymer-based lateral flow assay for detecting SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. GlycoGrip utilizes glycopolymers for primary capture and antispike antibodies labeled with gold nanoparticles for signal-generating detection. A lock-step integration between experiment and computation has enabled efficient optimization of GlycoGrip test strips which can selectively, sensitively, and rapidly detect SARS-CoV-2 and its variants in biofluids. Employing the power of the glycocalyx in a diagnostic assay has distinct advantages over conventional immunoassays as glycopolymers can bind to antigens in a multivalent capacity and are highly adaptable for mutated strains. As new variants of SARS-CoV-2 are identified, GlycoGrip will serve as a highly reconfigurable biosensor for their detection. Additionally, via extensive ensemble-based docking simulations which incorporate protein and glycan motion, we have elucidated important clues as to how heparan sulfate and other glycocalyx components may bind the spike glycoprotein during SARS-CoV-2 host-cell infection. GlycoGrip is a promising and generalizable alternative to costly, labor-intensive RT-PCR, and we envision it will be broadly useful, including for rural or low-income populations that are historically undertested and under-reported in infection statistics.Pneumonia, such as acute lung injury (ALI), has been a type of lethal disease that is generally caused by uncontrolled inflammatory response and excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, we report Fe-curcumin-based nanoparticles (Fe-Cur NPs) with nanozyme functionalities in guiding the intracellular ROS scavenging and meanwhile exhibiting anti-inflammation efficacy for curing ALI. The nanoparticles are noncytotoxic when directing these biological activities. Mechanism studies for the anti-inflammation aspects of Fe-Cur NPs were systematically carried out, in which the infected cells and tissues were alleviated through downregulating levels of several important inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), decreasing the intracellular Ca2+ release, inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasomes, and suppressing NF-κB signaling pathways. In addition, we performed both the intratracheal and intravenous injection of Fe-Cur NPs in mice experiencing ALI and, importantly, found that the accumulation of such nanozymes was enhanced in lung tissue (better than free curcumin drugs), demonstrating its promising therapeutic efficiency in two different administration methods. We showed that the inflammation reduction of Fe-Cur NPs was effective in animal experiments and that ROS scavenging was also effectively achieved in lung tissue. Finally, we revealed that Fe-Cur NPs can decrease the level of macrophage cells (CD11bloF4/80hi) and CD3+CD45+ T cells in mice, which could help suppress the inflammation cytokine storm caused by ALI. Overall, this work has developed the strategy of using Fe-Cur NPs as nanozymes to scavenge intracellular ROS and as an anti-inflammation nanodrugs to synergistically cure ALI, which may serve as a promising therapeutic agent in the clinical treatment of this deadly disease. On the occasion of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Canada's official multiculturalism policy, this article re-visits Canada's multiculturalism by reviewing its history and ethos and critically examining its actual effects as manifested during the Covid-19 pandemic in Canada. The rise of anti-Asian racism, anti-Black racism, and anti-Indigenous racism incidents in the pandemic reveals that multiculturalism has in effect, sustained a racist and unequal society of Canada with racism entrenched in its history and ingrained in every aspect of its social structure. Multiculturalism tolerates cultural difference but does not challenge an unjust society premised on white supremacy. The anti-racism movement mobilized by racialized communities in Canada indicates that multiculturalism has failed to respond to racialized communities' pressing demand for social change and action for social justice. The article concludes with a proposed alternative framework to multiculturalism, that is, pandemic anti-racism education model, to centre the issue of race and racism in an action-oriented, inclusive, and empowering approach toward a future of a just society.The use of system dynamics as a learning tool for developing sustainable energy strategies and environmental education has advanced in recent years with the availability of new modelling software and webtools. Among the existing models, we highlight the online 2050 Calculators, which aim at simulating scenarios for greenhouse gas emissions, energy planning, sustainable land use, and food consumption. The objective of this study is to assess the available calculators and their contribution to an interdisciplinary education via systems thinking. We carried out a review of the existing models worldwide and ran some of the tools with students from three different postgraduate programmes at master's level at Imperial College London (United Kingdom) and IFP School (France), whilst also assessing their individual views afterwards. The assessments were conducted once a year during three subsequent years 2019, 2020, and 2021. The present study aimed a three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography-derived determination of volumetric and functional features of the atrium being on the morphologic right side ['right atrium (RA)] in adult patients with dTGA.

The present study comprised 18 adult dTGA patients, four of whom were excluded due to inferior image quality. From the remaining 14 patients (mean age 29.7 ± 8.1 years, 9 males), 7 cases underwent Mustard-procedure, while another 7 subjects underwent Senning-procedure. Their results were compared to that of 28 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (28.8 ± 1.4 years, 20 males).

Increased RA volumes respecting the cardiac cycle could be demonstrated in dTGA patients compared to controls. RA stroke volumes (SVs) for reservoir and conduit function were reduced together with impaired RA emptying fractions (EFs) featuring all phases of RA function. Mustard-operated patients showed tendentiously lower RA volumes and increased SVs and EFs respecting the cardiac cycle compared to those of Senning-operated patients suggesting beneficial results for Mustard-procedure. Reduced RA global and mean segmental peak RA strains and RA strains at atrial contraction could be detected in dTGA patients compared to those of controls with tendentiously lower values in Mustard-operated patients compared to those of Senning-operated subjects.

Less is known about how adherence to diabetes medication varies geographically, and the correspondence of this variation to social and contextual factors. Using pharmacy claims data over a two-year period, this study analysed non-adherence to biguanide medication for N=24,387 adult Medicaid enrolees diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and residing in Ohio. Spatial analysis was used to detect clusters of census tract level rates of non-adherence, defined as the proportion of patients below the Proportion Days Covered (PDC) threshold of 80%, the level at which patients have a reasonable likelihood of achieving most clinical benefit from their medication. Multilevel models were used to understand associations between medication non-adherence and contextual factors including social vulnerability, urbanicity and distance to utilised pharmacy, with adjustment for individual-level covariates. These findings indicate that contextual factors are associated with medication non-adherence in Medicaid clients with T2DM.
