The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums and was a stronger, more constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour help promote it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally restructuring the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
