The surgical treatment of CNS actinomycetoma presented poor prognosis and a disseminating recurrence. We believe that clinicians and surgeons must be informed about these "new" infectious pathologies that are so difficult to treat, especially with the arrival of migrant patients from endemic countries in conflict.
The jugular foramen (JF) can be the site of several tumours. Paragangliomas, schwannomas and meningiomas are the most commonly reported. We describe a case of melanocytoma originating from the JF and presenting with an accessory nerve palsy. Illustrative case A 48-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of cervical and left shoulder pain with wasting and weakness of the left trapezius. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed a T1-hyperintense, T2-isointense, heterogeneously enhancing lesion involving the left JF and extending into the cerebello-medullary and cerebello-pontine cisterns. A retrosigmoid craniotomy was performed and a near total removal achieved. The accessory nerve was involved by tumour and could not be preserved. Given the diagnostic uncertainty between melanotic schwannoma, metastatic melanoma and meningeal melanocytoma, next generation sequencing and genome-wide DNA methylation arrays were performed, documenting a mutation in GNA11 (c.6226A>T, p. Gln209Leu) and a methylation profile consistent with melanocytoma. The patient underwent adjuvant fractionated radiotherapy of the tumour remnant. A follow-up MRI 4 years after surgery did not show any tumour recurrence.

Endothelial dysfunction is a condition in which the endothelial layer fails to form normally, and is associated with impaired vascular function. Despite the fact that MPs are known to enter the circulation system through intestinal epithelium, little has been known whether MPs impact the normal function of endothelial cells and the formation of vasculature. In the current study, we investigated the effect of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on tube formation and cytotoxicity in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Our study showed that the treatment of HUVECs with PS-MPs significantly decreased cell viability, with intracellular accumulation occurring in a dose- and size-dependent manner. Moreover, significant dose-dependent inhibition of angiogenic tube formation was observed in HUVECs treated with 0.5 μm PS-MPs; this effect was accompanied by suppression of angiogenic signaling pathways and inhibitory activity against wound healing and cell migration. Regarding the mechanism of decreased viability, we observed increased autophagic and necrotic cell death. These results indicate that 6-h exposure of endothelial cells to PS-MPs represses tube-forming capacity, while 48-h exposure leads to autophagy and necrosis-mediated cytotoxicity.Effectiveness of various emotion regulation (ER) strategies have received much attention in recent research. Among the most studied ER strategies are cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. However, the evidence of their effectiveness is controversial and depends on the measures used. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression strategies of ER via different measures such as self-report, facial expressions (zygomaticus major and corrugator supercilii electromyography), and physiological assessment (skin conductance response and heart rate deceleration). Participants were presented with intensely unpleasant or neutral pictures and performed ER tasks. We expected that the implementation of ER strategies would reduce negative emotions, and cognitive reappraisal would produce greater reduction in negative emotions compared to expressive suppression. Self-report data showed that reappraisal had a greater effect on the reduction of negative emotions compared to suppression. There was no difference between reappraisal and suppression assessed with skin conductance response and electromyography. Curiously, heart rate deceleration increased while participants tried to suppress their emotional expressions, which could reflect efforts exerted in the attempt to suppress. The ER strategies reduced negative emotions during the presentation of unpleasant pictures partially in skin conductance response and heart rate deceleration. Overall, reappraisal is more effective in changing subjective experience, whereas the physiological reactions do not differ substantially between the two ER strategies explored. We therefore recommend that the assessment of ER strategies in the laboratory should accommodate more than one type of measures to come to more reliable conclusions.Worldwide, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the third most important food crop after rice and wheat. Its production is however constrained by several virus diseases. The occurrence and distribution of the economically important viruses and associated insect vectors is however not known for Rwanda and Burundi, where potato is an important food security and income crop. We surveyed 194 potato fields for viruses and insect vectors. Aphids were commonly found infesting farmers' potato fields in contrast to whiteflies. Testing by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) for six potato viruses identified five viruses potato leafroll virus (PLRV), potato virus X, S, M and Y (PVX, PVS, PVM, PVY) in Rwanda and two viruses (PLRV and PVS) in Burundi. A subset of samples were analyzed using small RNA sequencing and assembly (sRSA) and additionally revealed presence of PVX and for the first time, tobacco rattle virus (TRV) in Burundi. PLRV and PVS were most common while PVY was rare and not found in Burundi, which is highly unusual. To our knowledge, this is the first report of TRV infecting potatoes in sub-Saharan Africa. Phylogenetic analysis of 14 complete viral genomes determined by sRSA suggested multiple introductions of viruses into the region.Idebenone (IDB) has demonstrated the potential to treat mitochondrial and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its therapeutic effects are compromised by poor compliance due to low bioavailability. The objective of this study is to fabricate IDB nanorods (IDBNRs) to improve oral bioavailability and increase concentrations in the brain in order to enhance therapeutic effects of IDB in the treatment of AD. IDBNRs showed desired sizes and rod-shaped morphologies. The release rate and the antioxidant activity of IDBNRs were improved relative to other delivery routes. The plasma and brain concentrations were enhanced due to rapid release into the systemic circulation. In behavioral tests, mice treated orally with IDBNRs showed amelioration of AD-induced impairment of learning and memory. Thus, because of improved efficiency of drug delivery, doses can be reduced, and the compliance and therapeutic experience of patients can be improved. IDBNRs may provide effective and convenient treatments for AD patients in the future.Cocaine dependence is a highly prevalent disease in modern society and lacks an effective treatment. Cannabidiol (CBD), a major non-psychoactive constituent of Cannabis sativa, has been shown to be a promising tool in the management of some neuropsychiatric disorders, including cocaine abuse. However, its therapeutic effects on the behavioral outcomes related to cocaine addiction remain unclear. The present research evaluates the effects of CBD (30, 60 and 120 mg/kg; injected intraperitoneally) on the acquisition, expression, extinction and reinstatement of cocaine (10 mg/kg)-induced conditioned place preference (CPP; Study 1); cocaine (25 mg/kg)-induced locomotor stimulation (Study 2); and cocaine withdrawal symptoms (Study 3) in male C57BL/6 J mice. The results show that CBD does not possess motivational properties in itself and does not modify the acquisition, expression or extinction of cocaine-induced CPP. Interestingly, when administered during the extinction phase of the cocaine-induced CPP, CBD (30 and 60 mg/kg) prevented priming-induced reinstatement of CPP. Moreover, CBD abolished cocaine-induced hyperactivity without altering the spontaneous locomotion of the animals. Their 3D cryogenically-structured network was built through hydrogen bonding formed by blending two naturally-derived polysaccharides, chitosan and dextrin. The embedment of EOs within the cryogel matrix generates porous films with an increased elasticity that allows their fast shape recovery after full compression. Thus, the swollen EOs-loaded cryogel films exhibited an elastic modulus of 3.00 MPa, which is more than 40 times higher than that of polysaccharide films without EOs (an elastic modulus of only 0.07 MPa). In addition, the encapsulation of bioactive compounds endows the bio-based films with both antioxidant and antifungal properties, showing a radical scavenging activity of 65% and a zone inhibition diameter of 40 mm for Candida parapsilosis fungi. Our results recommend the entrapment of EOs into bio-based cryogel carriers as a straightforward approach to provide 'green' polysaccharide-based films having both improved physicochemical properties and remarkable antifungal activity.Dipole Strength (DS) of the amides has gained a renewed interest in chemical physics since it provides an important tool to disclose the on-site vibrational energy distributions. Apart from earlier experimental efforts on polypeptides, little is still known about DS in complex proteins. We accurately measured the Fourier Transform Infrared absorption spectra of nine proteins in water solution obtaining their Molar Extinction Coefficient in the amide I and II spectral region. Our results show that the amide I DS value depends on the protein secondary structure, being that of the α-rich and unstructured proteins lower by a factor of 2 than that of the β-rich proteins. The average DS for amino acids in α and β secondary structures confirms this finding. Normal Mode calculation and Molecular Dynamics were performed and used as tools for data analysis and interpretation. The present outcomes corroborate the hypothesis that antiparallel β-sheet environment is more prone to delocalize the on-site CO stretching vibration through coupling mechanisms between carbonyl groups, whereas α-helix structures are energetically less stable to permit vibrational mode delocalization.
