The Band Toto Asia

The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its share of issues. The record companies put Toto under pressure to release an album that was a success or else they would pull the album. Luckily for Toto they delivered and they did it with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard of '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into you. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
