The Band Toto Asia

After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up


The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour to promote it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
