A warmer climate makes growing seasons longer and warmer, increases productivity, and may lower the water level. These effects prolong the duration and intensity of interspecific competition, support highly competitive Sphagnum mosses, and, as such, force niches of specialized fen species towards narrower high-pH ranges. Recent anthropogenic landscape changes pose a severe threat to many fen species and call for mitigation measures to lower competition pressure in their refugia.Understanding trophic cascades in terrestrial wildlife communities is a major challenge because these systems are difficult to sample properly. We show how a tradition of non-random sampling has confounded this understanding in a textbook system (Yellowstone National Park) where carnivore [Canis lupus (wolf)] recovery is associated with a trophic cascade involving changes in herbivore [Cervus canadensis (elk)] behaviour and density that promote plant regeneration. Long-term data indicate a practice of sampling only the tallest young plants overestimated regeneration of overstory aspen (Populus tremuloides) by a factor of 4-7 compared to random sampling because it favoured plants taller than the preferred browsing height of elk and overlooked non-regenerating aspen stands. Random sampling described a trophic cascade, but it was weaker than the one that non-random sampling described. Our findings highlight the critical importance of basic sampling principles (e.g. randomisation) for achieving an accurate understanding of trophic cascades in terrestrial wildlife systems.
Warfarin for the prevention of non-valvular atrial fibrillation related thromboembolic stroke in patients on maintenance haemodialysis is controversial. Despite the exclusion of haemodialysis patients in randomised control trials, the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology has recommended warfarin in high-risk AF patients.

We retrospectively examined the utility of warfarin anticoagulation therapy in our prevalent haemodialysis patients over 10 years of follow-up.

This study compared the structural connectome of children with mTBI or mild orthopedic injury (OI) to that of typically developing (TD) children. Children aged 8-16.99 years with mTBI (n = 83) or OI (n = 37) were recruited from the emergency department and completed 3T diffusion MRI 2-20 days postinjury. TD children (n = 39) were recruited from the community and completed diffusion MRI. Graph theory metrics were calculated for the binarized average fractional anisotropy among 90 regions. Multivariable linear regression and linear mixed effects models were used to compare groups, with covariates age, hemisphere, and sex, correcting for multiple comparisons. The two injury groups did not differ on graph theory metrics, but both differed from TD children in global metrics (local network efficiency TD > OI, mTBI, d = 0.49; clustering coefficient TD OI, mTBI, d = 0.66 to 0.68). Both mTBI and OI demonstrated reduced global and regional network efficiency and segregation as compared to TD children. Findings suggest a general effect of childhood injury that could reflect pre- and postinjury factors that can alter brain structure. An OI group provides a more conservative comparison group than TD children for structural neuroimaging research in pediatric mTBI.
Acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections have been associated with various neurological disorders, including individual cases with Bell's palsy. Nonetheless, systematic studies in the latter are lacking. Therefore, this retrospective study systematically screened a cohort of patients with Bell's palsy for an acute HEV infection.

Overall, 104 patients with Bell's palsy treated in our clinic between 2008 and 2018 were identified. Serum samples were analyzed for anti-HEV immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, serum samples were tested for HEV RNA by polymerase chain reaction in 92 of these 104 patients presenting within the first 7days from symptom onset. A large group of 263healthy individuals served as controls.

None of the patients with Bell's palsy but two healthy controls (0.8%) had an acute HEV infection. Anti-HEV IgG seroprevalence indicating previous infection was unexpectedly high in patients with Bell's palsy (34%) and revealed an age-dependent increase.

In this first systematic study, no cases of Bell's palsy in association with an acute HEV infection were identified. However, based on previous case descriptions, rare associations cannot be excluded. Therefore, large prospective multicenter studies will be necessary for conclusions that are more definitive.

This paper aims to explore the care processes that best exemplify person-centred care during physical activity (PA) for long-term care (LTC) residents with dementia from the perspectives of substitute decision-makers (SDMs) and LTC home staff. Little is known about how person-centred care is reflected during PA for residents with dementia, or the barriers and benefits to enacting person-centred care during PA.

Semistructured interviews were used to collect SDMs and LTC home staffs' perspectives on the importance of person-centred care during PA from two LTC homes in Canada. The McCormack and McCance person-centredness framework was used to guide thematic content analysis of responses.

SDM (n = 26) and staff (n = 21) identified actions categorized under the sympathetic presence or engagement care processes from the person-centredness framework as most reflecting person-centred care. Benefits of person-centred care during PA were categorized into three themes functional and physical, behavioural and communication and psychosocial improvements. Barriers to person-centred care during PA identified were lack of time, opportunities for meaningful activity in LTC setting and staff experiences with resident aggression.

Understanding the care processes that are most recognized as person-centred care and valued by SDMs and LTC home staff has implications for education and training. Insights into SDMs' care expectations regarding person-centred care can inform staff about which actions should be prioritized to meet care expectations and can foster relationships to the benefit of residents with dementia.

Here we show that calcineurin B-like interacting protein kinase CIPK9 along with its interacting partner VDAC3 identified in the present study are involved in mediating plant responses to methyl viologen (MV). CIPK9 physically interacts with and phosphorylates VDAC3. Co-localization, co-immunoprecipitation, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer experiments proved their physical interaction in planta. Both cipk9 and vdac3 mutants exhibited a tolerant phenotype against MV-induced oxidative stress, which coincided with the lower-level accumulation of reactive oxygen species in their roots. In addition, the analysis of cipk9vdac3 double mutant and VDAC3 overexpressing plants revealed that CIPK9 and VDAC3 were involved in the same pathway for inducing MV-dependent oxidative stress. The response to MV was suppressed by the addition of lanthanum chloride, a non-specific Ca2+ channel blocker indicating the role of Ca2+ in this pathway. Our study suggest that CIPK9-VDAC3 module may act as a key component in mediating oxidative stress responses in Arabidopsis.
This investigation comprised information from the Danish population to analyse the development of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) prevalence according to sex, age, physical job demand and educational level.

Data derives from the Danish Health and Morbidity Surveys based on random samples of adults living in Denmark. The analysed samples were composed by 10,457 in 2000 (response rate 62.7%), 5686 in 2005 (52.1%), 15,165 in 2010 (60.1%), 14,265 in 2013 (57.1%) and 14,022 in 2017 (56.1%). CNCP was defined as pain lasting 6months or more. Individuals with a self-reported history of cancer were excluded. Calibration weighting was applied to reduce the impact of potential non-response bias. The Relative and the Absolute Concentration Index were calculated to measure educational inequalities.

CNCP prevalence has increased 8.3 percentage points during 2000-2017 (19.5%-27.8%) and is highest among women (22.1% to 30.8%). Higher CNCP prevalence among men aged 45-64years exceeded the men aged >65years in 2017 (31development of chronic non-cancer pain in a country and analyses the trends with socioeconomic inequalities. The continuous increasing prevalence may have huge social and economic implications. This study reveals an urgent need for measures to attenuate the increasing prevalence, which should be a priority for public health policy.The activation of microglia is found to be associated with neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several studies have shown that okadaic acid (OA) induced deposition of tau hyperphosphorylation, and subsequent neuronal degeneration, loss of synapses, and memory impairment, all of which resemble the pathology of AD. Although OA is a powerful tool available for mechanisms of the neurotoxicity associated with AD, the exact mechanism underlying the activation of microglial cells remains unrevealed. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of both OA and OA-treated neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells on microglial HAPI cell viability, activation, and phagocytosis. The results showed that both OA and OA-treated neurons did not induce any detectable cytotoxicity of microglial cells. Furthermore, incubation with OA-treated SH-SY5Y cells could increase the expression of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) on microglial HAPI cells. This result indicated that OA may induce microglial activation through the toxicity of neurons.
