Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a major tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
