Methanol is highly toxic for human, so methanol detection is valuable especially in water and ethanol medium without complicated and time consuming procedure. In this work, we present a new fluorescence probe for direct detection of methanol in aqueous and ethanol medium based on the ZnSMn2+ quantum dot (QDs) and soluble N-methylpolypyrrole (NMPPy) hybrid. Moreover, the number of spectroscopic techniques were used to study the chemical composition and optical properties of the resultant QDs as well as investigation on the sensing mechanism toward methanol. Also, methanol can be determined by using ZnSMn2+ QDs/NMPPy hybrid based switchable fluorescence sensing system, with high sensitivity, high selectivity and a very good detection limit of 1 mM with linearity in the concentration range of 25-230 mM (~0.1-0.9% v/v) in aqueous solution. Finally, the ZnSMn2+ QDs/NMPPy hybrid as optical sensor was successfully utilized to determine the amount of methanol in real alcoholic beverage samples.The thermal degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) was investigated in water and fish (cod, basa) fillets. Ultrasound assisted solvent extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS) was used to analyze residues in fish. Good instrumental linearity (r2 > 0.99) and recoveries (83.3-128.4%) were achieved. BPA and BPS did not degrade (1 h; 100 °C) in water ( less then 0.1% degradation) but degraded in fish matrices. The degradation percentage of BPA was 33.0 ± 1.5% and 35.4 ± 1.2% in incurred and spiked cod, respectively; and the degradation percentage of BPS was 34.7 ± 1.7% and 37.5 ± 1.4% in incurred and spiked basa, respectively. The degradation products in spiked samples were different from those in the incurred group under the same conditions. This first study on the thermal degradation of plastic-related chemicals in food using a non-targeted approach will contribute to the refining of food safety risk assessments.This study presents a level-1 identification of the seven carbon (7-C) sugar C-methyl-scyllo-inositol (mytilitol) in mussels and clams (Mytilus and Ruditapes spp., respectively) purchased in Denmark and Italy. For each sample, the hydrophilic extract of the soft tissue was analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy using a 600 MHz NMR spectrometer. A first tentative identification of mytilitol was carried out by computing a statistical total correlation spectroscopy (STOCY) analysis of the 1H NMR spectra, followed by a level-1 identification based on first-principles methods including chemical synthesis, structure elucidation and standard-addition experiments. Mytilitol was quantified in the 1H NMR spectra and its average relative concentration turned out to be significantly lower in clams than in mussels (p-value less then 0.001), with Danish mussels having the highest mytilitol concentration. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the NMR dataset brought further evidence to a species-specific and geographic-dependent content of mytilitol in mussels and clams.Potato trypsin inhibitor (PTI) was obtained from imitated potato wastewater through a sustainable method of sequential acid precipitation, salting out, and ultrafiltration. PTI had a favorable inhibition with the low IC50 of 6.861 ± 0.107 mg/L. To explore stability of PTI against pH and heating treatment, PTI secondary structure was investigated by circular dichroism and inhibition was determined using the BAPNA method. The results indicated that PTI exerted a certain heat resistance and excellent stability over a wide pH range. Also, correlation analysis displayed β-sheet and β-turn contents of PTI had a positive correlation with inhibition, whereas α-helix and random coil contents were negatively correlated with inhibition. During in vitro digestion, the limited loss rate of activity (29.28%) and degree of hydrolysis (24.39%) suggested that PTI presented sufficient resistance to gastrointestinal digestion. These findings would extend beneficial hints to convert potato wastewater by-product into the potential anti-obesity ingredient in future.While there is strong evidence from observational studies that physical activity is associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia, the extent to which aerobic training interventions impact on cognitive health and brain structure remains subject to debate. In a pilot study of 46 healthy older adults (66.6 years ± 5.2 years, 63% female), we compared the effects of a twelve-week aerobic training programme to a waitlist control condition on cardiorespiratory fitness, cognition and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by VO2 max testing. Cognitive assessments spanned executive function, memory and processing speed. Structural MRI analysis included examination of hippocampal volume, and voxel-wise assessment of grey matter volumes using voxel-based morphometry. Diffusion tensor imaging analysis of fractional anisotropy, axial diffusivity and radial diffusivity was performed using tract-based spatial statistics. While the intervention successfully increased cardiorespiratory fitness, there was no evidence that the aerobic training programme led to changes in cognitive functioning or measures of brain structure in older adults. Aims The aim of the current study was to investigate whether parents of children with DCD report clinically-significant levels of parenting stress, and to assess a number of factors contributing to this stress, based on evidence from research into other neurodevelopmental disorders. Methods and procedures A survey was completed by 174 parents of children aged 5-12 years with DCD (parents age M = 42;3, SD = 4;11), comprising measures of the child's motor difficulties and behavioural problems, the parent's perceived competence in the parenting role and perceived levels of social support, and parenting stress. Outcomes and results Two thirds of parents reported clinically-significant levels of stress. Multiple regression analyses revealed that all variables except for level of motor difficulties were unique predictors of parenting stress. Conclusions and implications The study highlights the need for greater awareness of DCD by bringing attention to the impact it can have on the whole family.
