OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of health education on incidence of work-related HE in MWAs and to assess confounding factors. MATERIALS/METHODS In a prospective controlled intervention study, 131 MWAs received educational training on prevention of HE, whereas 172 MWAs and 118 office work apprentices served as controls. At baseline and during three yearly follow-ups, questionnaires were completed and hands were examined. Saliva samples were collected for assessment of filaggrin (FLG) null mutations and an explorative genome-wide association study (GWAS), and levels of various cytokines were assessed from stratum corneum samples. RESULTS The 2-year and 3-year incidence of HE in the metalwork control group was 20.9% and 32.6%, respectively, which was significantly higher than in the intervention group (odds ratio [OR] 2.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.31 to 5.28, P  less then  .01 and OR 3.47, 95% CI 1.88 to 6.40, P  less then  .0001). The knowledge score was higher in unaffected MWAs (P  less then  .05). Other factors significantly associated with developing HE in MWAs were smoking cigarettes (P  less then  .01) and FLG mutations (P  less then  .001). No significant links were found regarding epidermal cytokine levels and GWAS. CONCLUSIONS Health education is effective in primary prevention of HE in MWAs. Individual factors should be considered in targeted counseling. © 2020 The Authors. Currently, there is little research on the effect of microorganisms on the fermentation and quality characteristics of Pingwu Fuzhuan brick tea. Investigation of main fungus in Pingwu Fuzhuan brick tea and its effect on fermentation process and tea quality can provide insights into manufacturing of "western road" border-selling tea and lay a foundation for popularization of Pingwu Fuzhuan brick tea. RESULTS The main "golden flower fungus" in Pingwu Fuzhuan brick tea was isolated and identified as Eurotium cristatum (GenBank accession number MF800948.1; strain PW-1). Compared with natural fermentation, PW-1 inoculated fermentation accelerated biotransformation of phenolic compounds, which imparted tea samples with better taste and tea infusion color. The proportions of velvety-like and sweet-tasting amino acids were increased after 16-day fermentation with PW-1. Alcohols were the most abundant volatiles, of which the contents were 40.13% and 39.43% in NF16d and IF16d tea samples. The orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) further revealed naturally and PW-1 fermented teas were significantly different. CONCLUSION Strain PW-1 plays an important role in the fermentation process of Fuzhuan brick tea. Considering fermentation efficiency and tea quality, fermentation inoculated with E. cristatum PW-1 can be applied in the manufacturing of "western road" border-selling tea. The use of healthy olives and their good management along the production process are necessary to obtain the best quality virgin olive oils. One parameter related to the health of the olives is the content of fatty acid alkyl esters. Because these come from the esterification of C16 and C18 free fatty acids with short chain alcohols, the control of methanol, ethanol and acetaldehyde (precursor of ethanol) and their origin (endogenous or from fermentation) is essential. The present study reports the endogenous amount of these compounds in some of the main Spanish olive varieties. For their analyses, headspace solid phase micro-extraction was applied and, to ensure quantitation reliability, the matrix-matched technique was used to build the calibration lines. RESULTS For healthy and mature olives, the contents of ethanol and methanol are much higher and vary within a wider range than those corresponding to acetaldehyde. Because olives were not directly analyzed but previously homogenized, there was no correlation between the olive size parameters and the contents of the compounds investigated. However, these contents are characteristic of each variety. When comparing healthy and unhealthy olives, significant differences were only observed for ethanol contents. Trichostatin A supplier CONCLUSION Higher contents of short alcohols are not only the result of an unhealthy or poor state of the fruits, but also the variety. Therefore, because these alcohols are precursors of fatty acid alkyl esters, the maximum permissible content of the latter should not be set at a single value for all olive varieties. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. This study examined the associations between classmates' reading-related gender stereotypes and students' reading self-efficacy, self-concept, motivation, and achievement. Our sample consisted of 1,508 fifth-grade students (49% girls; age 10.89 years); data were collected at two time points. Multilevel analyses yielded two main results First, there was a relation between students' individual reading-related gender stereotypes and their reading self-concept, self-efficacy, and motivation with boys experiencing negative and girls experiencing positive effects. Second, a contextual effect was found after controlling for students' individual reading-related gender stereotypes, classmates' gender stereotypes were negatively related to all of the boys' reading outcomes. The results provide evidence for the assumption that classmates are important communicators of gender stereotypes and that they reinforce conforming behaviors. © 2020 The Authors. Although these skills may be valued by the health professions, admission processes often do not account for them. This study evaluated the performance of applicants to 3 dental hygiene programs in a multiple mini-interview designed to assess characteristics deemed desirable by the programs and profession. METHODS Trained evaluators assessed the performance of participants as they rotated through 8 unique stations designed to highlight specific traits. Participants were scored on a 1-7 Likert scale, and a mean average was calculated based on performance at all stations. Participants and evaluators also completed a survey to determine opinions regarding the multiple mini-interview (MMI) activity and its potential as an admissions tool. Two-tailed Fisher's exact test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to assess the relationship between station types, and ANOVA and post hoc tests to analyze the performance of program groups among stations. Qualitative data were analyzed for trends and themes. RESULTS Mean scores ranged from 2.5 to 6.25, with a mean average of 4.90. Both participants and evaluators expressed a high degree of satisfaction with the activity overall and believed it was an effective tool for assessment of nonacademic traits. CONCLUSION An MMI is a feasible option for assessment of nonacademic traits of candidates for admission to dental hygiene programs. Programs that consider both academic and nonacademic performances of applicants may admit individuals who are not only uniquely qualified to be healthcare providers, but might otherwise not have gained admission. © 2020 American Dental Education Association.KEY POINTS The functional neuroanatomy of the mammalian respiratory network is far from being understood since experimental tools that measure neural activity across this brainstem-wide circuit are lacking. Here, we use silicon multi-electrode arrays (MEAs) to record respiratory local field potentials (rLFPs) from 196-364 electrode sites within 8-10 mm3 of brainstem tissue in single arterially-perfused brainstem preparations with respect to the on-going respiratory motor pattern of inspiration (I), post-inspiration (PI) and late-expiration (E2). rLFPs peaked specifically at the three respiratory phase transitions, from E2-I, I-PI and PI-E2. We show, for the first time, that only the I-PI transition engages a brainstem-wide network, and that rLFPs during the PI-E2 transition identify a hitherto unknown role for the dorsal respiratory group. Volumetric mapping of ponto-medullary rLFPs in single preparations could become a reliable tool to assess the functional neuroanatomy of the respiratory network in health a E2. Thus, respiratory network activity was maximal at respiratory phase transitions. Spatially, the E2-I, and PI-E2 transitions were anatomically localized to the ventral and dorsal respiratory groups, respectively. In contrast, our data show, for the first time, that the generation of controlled expiration during the post-inspiratory phase engages a distributed neuronal population within ventral, dorsal and pontine network compartments. A group-wise independent component analysis demonstrated that all preparations exhibited rLFPs with a similar temporal structure and thus, share a similar functional neuroanatomy. Thus, volumetric mapping of rLFPs could allow for the physiological assessment of global respiratory network organization in health and disease. This article is protected by copyright.
