y/activity in conjunction with availability of in vivo carcinogenicity data revealed regions of either data-poor (hydroxylated-PAHs) or data-rich (unsubstituted, parent PAHs) PACs. These regions offer potential targets for prioritization of further in vivo assessment and for chemical read-across efforts. The analysis results are searchable through an interactive web application (https//ntp.niehs.nih.gov/go/pacs_tableau), allowing for alternative hypothesis generation. The interaction of polysaccharides with water has a critical impact on their biological function as well as their technological applications. We performed ellipsometry experiments at different relative humidities (RH) to measure the equilibrium swelling of ultrathin films of different polysaccharides native and modified phytoglycogen (PG) nanoparticles, dextran, and hyaluronic acid. For RH > 70%, the swelling of hydrophilic polymers with increases in RH is described by hydration forces that are characterized by an exponential decay length λ. Our analysis of the high RH swelling regime allowed us to determine λ and the bulk modulus K of the films of different polysaccharides. We also probed the high RH swelling regime using attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, which allowed us to determine the degree of hydrogen bonding of the hydration water within the polysaccharide films. Combining the ellipsometry and ATR-IR spectroscopy results, we find that increases in the order of the hydrogen bond network of the hydration water, as specified by the ATR-IR parameter Rnetwork, lead to linear increases in K and corresponding inverse changes in λ. These measurements help to elucidate the intimate relationships between the degree of ordering of hydration water, hydration forces, and the mechanical stiffness of polysaccharides. For phytoglycogen, the addition of chemical groups, both cationic and anionic, produced significant increases in its water holding capacity and mechanical properties, suggesting that chemical modification can be used to tune the properties of phytoglycogen for different applications.Enantioconvergent intramolecular coupling of α-(2-bromobenzoylamino)benzylboronic esters was achieved using a copper catalyst having helically chiral macromolecular bipyridyl ligand, PQXbpy. Racemic α-(2-bromobenzoylamino)benzylboronic esters were converted into (R)-configured 3-arylisoindolinones with high enantiopurity using right-handed helical PQXbpy as a chiral ligand in a toluene/CHCl3 mixed solvent. #link# When enantiopure (R)- and (S)-configured boronates were separately reacted under the same reaction conditions, both afforded (R)-configured products through formal stereoinvertive and stereoretentive processes, respectively. From these results, a mechanism involving deracemization of organocopper intermediates in the presence of PQXbpy is assumed. PQXbpy switched its helical sense to left-handed when a toluene/1,1,2-trichloroethane mixed solvent was used, resulting in the formation of the corresponding (S)-products from the racemic starting material.Aqueous organic-based flow batteries are increasingly receiving attention owing to their appealing traits of high safety and low cost. An economic and high-performance membrane is always regarded as the heart of the batteries. Here, we introduce a cost-effective, homemade porous membrane with high performance for alkaline quinone-based flow batteries. link2 The membrane is constituted by highly stable poly(ether sulfone) (PES) and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) that serves dual functions of (1) adjusting the membrane microstructure and (2) endowing the membrane with a charge trait. Benefiting from the well-tuned structure and charge property of the membrane, a high ion selectivity and transport of OH- with much higher mobility serving as the primary charge-balancing ion can be realized. By employing alkaline alizarin red (ARS)/ferro-ferricyanide flow battery as the platform, a battery delivers a coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.28% and an energy efficiency (EE) of 85.81% at 40 mA cm-2, which is higher than that of the battery with a Nafion 212 membrane (CE ∼ 99.19%, EE ∼ 84.60%), however, with much lower cost. The successful application of homemade porous membrane may provide a new strategy to engineer and fabricate membranes with high efficiency for alkaline quinone-based flow batteries and further decrease the batteries' cost.We successfully identified native point defects that occur in Bi2Te3 crystals by combining high-resolution bias-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory based calculations. As-grown Bi2Te3 crystals contain vacancies, antisites, and interstitial defects that may result in bulk conductivity and therefore may change the insulating bulk character. link3 Here, we demonstrate the interplay between the growth conditions and the density of different types of native near-surface defects. In particular, scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals the dependence on not only the local atomic environment but also on the growth kinetics and the resulting sample doping from n-type toward intrinsic crystals with the Fermi level positioned inside the energy gap. Our results establish a bias-dependent STM signature of the Bi2Te3 native defects and shed light on the link between the native defects and the electronic properties of Bi2Te3, which is relevant for the synthesis of topological insulator materials and the related functional properties. In the mixed matrix membrane (MMM), the interface between the filler and the polymer matrix will directly affect the gas separation performance of the membranes. Reasonable interfacial design in MMMs is thus important and necessary. In this work, metal-organic coordination interaction is used to construct the interface in metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheet-based polyimide MMMs where ultrathin Co-benzenedicarboxylate MOF nanosheets (CBMNs) with a thickness less than 5 nm and a lateral size more than 5 μm are synthesized as fillers and a carboxyl-functionalized polyimide (6FDA-durene-DABA) is used as a polymer matrix. Because of the high aspect ratio (>1000) of CBMNs, abundant metal-organic coordination bonds are formed between Co2+ in CBMNs and the -COOH group in 6FDA-durene-DABA. As a result, the 6FDA-durene-DABA/CBMN MMMs exhibit improved separation performance for the CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 gas pairs with H2/CH4 and CO2/CH4 selectivities up to 42.0 ± 4.0 and 33.6 ± 3.0, respectively. The enhanced interfacial interaction leads to the comprehensive separation performance of CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 gas pairs approaching or surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. In addition, the CO2 plasticization pressure of the MMMs is significantly enhanced up to ∼20 bar, which is 2 times that of the pure 6FDA-durene-DABA membrane. When separating a mixed gas of CO2/CH4, the selectivity of CO2/CH4 remains stable at around 23 and the CO2 permeability keeps around 400 barrer during the long-term test.We developed genetically encoded voltage indicators using a transmembrane voltage-sensing domain and bright near-infrared fluorescent proteins derived from bacterial phytochromes. These new voltage indicators are excited by 640 nm light and emission is measured at 670 nm, allowing imaging in the near-infrared tissue transparency window. The spectral properties of our new indicators permit seamless voltage imaging with simultaneous blue-green light optogenetic actuator activation as well as simultaneous voltage-calcium imaging when paired with green calcium indicators. Iterative optimizations led to a fluorescent probe, here termed nirButterfly, which reliably reports neuronal activities including subthreshold membrane potential depolarization and hyperpolarization as well as spontaneous spiking or electrically- and optogenetically evoked action potentials. This enables largely improved all-optical causal interrogations of physiology.Recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES) is a common chronic disease associated with repeated episodes of epithelial disruption and is characterized by sudden onset of sharp pain in the eye, usually at night or upon waking, as well as redness, photophobia and lacrimation. The cause of the disease is considered to be impaired adhesion of the epithelial layer to the stroma, which is a consequence of abnormal regeneration of the basement membrane of corneal epithelium. A number of biological factors, including inflammatory mediators and proteinases in high concentrations, contribute to the destruction of the formed adhesion complexes. The basis of RCES diagnosis is characteristic medical history and biomicroscopy. An area of epithelium absence can be detected under direct illumination - more often in paracentral view - mainly in the lower third of the cornea, where an area of loose and irregular epithelium with microcysts or grayish inclusions can be seen. There may also be a card-like or «fingerprint» pattern. First of all, it is necessary to differentiate RCES from infectious lesions, which require a fundamentally different treatment regimen. It is believed that the first stage of treatment should include lubricants, drugs that promote epithelialization, inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases and lipases. The «second line» of conservative treatment can include blood derivatives. If conservative therapy is ineffective, it is advised to use phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) or perform diamond burr polishing of Bowman's layer. The choice of a method for treating recurrent erosion should be based on the effectiveness of drug therapy, frequency of recurrence, duration of the disease, severity of clinical symptoms, availability of specific ophthalmic equipment and experience with it.Keratectasias are non-inflammatory dystrophic diseases of the cornea characterized by progressive bilateral thinning of the cornea that lead to deterioration in the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of vision reducing patient's quality of life. GS-5734 chemical structure can be asymmetrical and destructive. A number of surgeries have been proposed to reduce the negative effects of keratectasia including penetrating keratoplasty and its modifications, implantation of corneal ring segments, corneal cross-linking - alone and in combination with other methods, intrastromal keratoplasty. These methods can improve visual acuity to a certain degree and help slow the progression of keratectasia. This article studies various surgical methods used for treating keratectasia and analyses possible assessment of the quality of vision before and after the treatment. The review presents the main pathogenetic mechanisms of cataract development in an avitic eye as well as anatomical and functional changes of the eye in the state of avitria. The authors have also analyzed distinctive behavior of such eyes during phacoemulsification and surgical techniques used to answer specific avitreal phenomena. The review summarizes the results of surgical treatment of cataracts in patients with keratoconus. The major challenges of phacosurgery in keratoconus are associated with intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation, choice of the most appropriate IOL model and additional interventions required to stabilize keratectasia and reduce corneal irregularity.
