Globally, maternal and neonatal health remains a public health priority, particularly for resource-constrained regions like sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Skilled birth attendance (SBA) is essential in promoting maternal and neonatal health. This study investigated the inequalities in the prevalence of SBA in Ghana using data from the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) between 1993 and 2014.

Data were analysed using the World Health Organization's Health Equity Assessment Toolkit software. In analysing the data, we first disaggregated SBA by four inequality stratifiers wealth index, education, residence, and region. Second, we measured the inequality through summary measures, namely difference, population attributable risk, ratio, and population attributable fraction. A 95% confidence interval was constructed for point estimates to measure statistical significance.

Throughout the period, SBA was highest among women in the highest wealth quintile and those with a secondary or higher level of education wealth, residence, and region in Ghana. To enhance SBA, there is the need for policymakers and interventionists to design and develop targeted policies and programs that are tailored to the needs of the subpopulations at risk of low SBA women with no formal education, those within the poorest wealth quintile, rural-dwelling women and women in the Northern region. This will facilitate the uptake of SBA and ultimately translate into the realization of Sustainable Development Goals 3.1 and 3.2.Bentonite (BT) is a biocompatible clay mineral that has advantageous properties as a pharmaceutical excipient. However, the application of BT in controlled-release oral formulations has been challenging due to incomplete drug release from BT-drug complexes. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of modifying BT with zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine (PC) to enhance the dissolution of drugs, thereby increasing their oral bioavailability. Quetiapine (QTP) was chosen as a model drug, and the composition of the complex (BT-PC-QTP) was optimized to have the maximum QTP content and increase the total amount of QTP released. The in vitro release study showed that the incorporation of an appropriate amount of PC into BT improved the low release rate of the BT-QTP complex at pH 7.4, while the pH-dependent release property of BT was maintained. In an in vivo pharmacokinetic study in rats, the oral administration of the BT-PC-QTP complex showed significantly higher Cmax and AUC values than the BT-QTP complex. Moreover, BT-PC-QTP showed a 2.4-fold enhancement of oral bioavailability compared to the QTP powder group. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies confirmed that the intercalation of PC and QTP into BT resulted in the adsorption of QTP in an amorphous state. The characterization of the nanoparticles generated from the BT-PC-QTP complex supported that PC enhanced the dissolution of QTP by forming nanosized PC particles. Taken together, the modification of BT with PC can be applied in pharmaceutical industry as a platform strategy to control the release of the BT-drug complex and enhance the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.The use of 3D printing for the production of systems intended for oral delivery of diet supplements in the veterinary pharmacy constitutes an attractive technology that has remained unexplored. In this sense, this work studies the design and 3D printing of capsular devices that allow the modified release of urea, which is frequently used as a source of non-protein nitrogen in ruminants, but highly toxic if fast ingested. The devices were printed with combinations of polylactic acid (PLA, water-insoluble) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, water-soluble) in order to modulate the urea release through the different parts. The optimization of the designs as well as printing parameters such as extrusion temperature, printing speed, retraction distance and nozzle speed resulted critical to obtain successful capsular devices. In addition, the dissolution studies confirmed that the developed designs showed a controlled release of urea, especially the ones that presented internal partitions. Finally, Logistic and Weibull equations were the kinetic models that best fitted the experimental data corresponding to functions that describe S-shaped dissolution profiles. Overall, this work constitutes a proof of concept and provides the first steps in the development of 3D printed simple devices for the controlled release of supplements and drugs in veterinary pharmacy.A niosomal formula of acemetacin was developed to improve its tumor targeting and radio-kinetic evaluation was performed using 131I. Niosomes were prepared by ether injection method and characterized for particle size (PS), polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential (ZP), entrapment efficiency (EE%) and in vitro drug release. Factors affecting radiolabeling with 131I were studied and optimized. Radio-kinetic evaluation was done for 131I-ACM optimum niosomal formula by intravenous (I.V) administration to solid tumor bearing mice and compared to I.V 131I-ACM solution as a control. The average droplet size, zeta potential and in vitro release after 24 h for the optimum formula were 315.23 ± 5.37 nm, -9.16 ± 2.91 and 76 %, respectively. The greatest labeling yield of 131I-ACM was 93.1 ± 1.1 %. Radio-kinetic evaluation showed a maximum tumor uptake of 5.431 %ID/g for 131I-ACM niosomal formula and 2.601 %ID/g for 131I-ACM solution at 60 min post I.V. injection. As a conclusion, niosomal formula increased tumor uptake of ACM by passive targeting of the nanosized niosomes. In addition, chemotherapeutic effect of ACM and radiotherapeutic effect of 131I were successfully combined in one treatment regimen using 131I-ACM niosomes which could be used as a hopeful dual anticancer therapy.
Bipolar disorder (BD) patients show neurological abnormalities in form of neurological and cerebellar soft signs (NSS and CSS). NSS represents heterogeneous group of symptoms representing i.a. deficits of motor coordination, sequencing of complex motor acts and sensory integration. CSS were introduced as group of the neurological deficits of posture, gait, kinetic functions, eye movements and speech, associated more specifically to cerebellar abnormalities than NSS. Studies show significant effect size variability of those symptoms in BD group suggesting the existence of differing subpopulations. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of BD type, stage and the history of psychotic symptoms (HoPS) on the severity of CSS and NSS as none of the previous studies had verified the role of those categories.

This study involved 181 participants 116 euthymic BD patients (66 BD I, 50 BD II) and 65 healthy controls (HC). CSS was assessed with the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale and NSS with Netially used as easy-to-assess biological marker of BD staging. Observed severity of neurological impairments of BD patients may more likely correspond to the disease progression than to BD type and HoPS.
In this hitherto the largest study of neurological abnormalities in BD we have shown significant role of staging in CSS and NSS severity. Progression criteria based on inter-episode psychosocial functioning may stand as unrecognised factor responsible for variability observed in previous studies evaluating neurological abnormalities in BD. Our study suggests that in clinical practice NSS and CSS may be potentially used as easy-to-assess biological marker of BD staging. Observed severity of neurological impairments of BD patients may more likely correspond to the disease progression than to BD type and HoPS.In the present investigation, we identified a cymothoid isopod species, Livoneca redmanii (Isopoda, Cymothoidae), in the branchial cavity, skin, and muscle pouch of the common sole (Solea solea) (Soleidae, Pleuronectiformes) from Qarun Lake, Egypt. The parasite was identified by morphometric and ultrastructural analysis, and molecular typing of the 16S rRNA gene. Out of 625 S. solea specimens collected, 8.16% were infested with the isopod. For the first time, the ultrastructural features of L. redmanii in different growth stages were described, revealing the fine characteristics of the body appendages, the eyes, the antennae, and the antennules of the female, male, and juvenile isopod, as well as the external layers of the ova. Although the specific activities of the constituent enzyme complexes of succinate oxidase are fairly similar in adult and plerocercoid mitochondria, those of succinate oxidase and NADH-FRD are approximately 4- and 25-fold higher in adult mitochondria than in plerocercoid mitochondria, respectively. Quinone analysis by high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry showed that adult and plerocercoid mitochondria contained both rhodoquinone-10 and ubiquinone-10 at concentrations of 4.98 and 0.106 nmol mg-1 for adult, and 0.677 and 0.137 nmol mg-1 for plerocercoid, respectively. Inhibition studies on the succinate-oxidase system of adult mitochondria showed that they possessed both cyanide-sensitive and -insensitive succinate oxidases, the latter of which produces hydrogen peroxide. Adult mitochondria, when NADH was used as a substrate, were shown to produce hydrogen peroxide, and the production of hydrogen peroxide decreased to undetectable levels in the presence of fumarate. The specific activities of NADH-fumarate reductase and cytochrome c oxidase were significantly higher in mature proglottids than in immature and gravid proglottids. Isopycnic density-gradient centrifugation analyses and in situ electron microscopic histochemistry revealed that both adult and plerocercoid mitochondria were heterogeneous in terms of respiratory function and physicochemical properties. However, the use of FGC requires the validation of measurement techniques and the proper selection of the specific hormone according to the study species. The main objective of this study was to identify the dominant glucocorticoid (GC) hormone in the stress response of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in an arid grassland of Chihuahua, Mexico. A capture stress challenge in the field was developed to determine if the levels of glucocorticoids (cortisol and corticosterone) both in serum and fecal samples could be attributed to stress in Cynomys ludovicianus. The samples were analysed with the technique of liquid phase radioimmunoassay , and this study showed that both cortisol and corticosterone are present at measurable levels in serum and fecal samples of black-tailed prairie dogs.
