The findings reported in our study add to this body of knowledge, strengthening the association between periodontal disease with systemic inflammatory conditions.
The findings reported in our study add to this body of knowledge, strengthening the association between periodontal disease with systemic inflammatory conditions.Amino acids have a wide range of biological activities, which usually rely on the stereoisomer presented. In this study, glycine and 21 common α-amino acids were investigated for their herbicidal property against Chinese amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.). Both d- and l-isomers, as well as a racemic mixture, were tested and found that most compounds barely inhibited germination but moderately suppressed seedling growth. Various ratios of dl-mixture were studied and synergy between enantiomers was found. For Chinese amaranth, the most toxic dl-mixtures were at 37 (for glutamine), 82 (for methionine), and 55 (for tryptophan). For barnyard grass, rac-glutamine was more toxic than the pure forms; however, d-tryptophan exhibited greater activity than racemate and l-isomer, indicating the sign of enantioselective toxicity. The mode of action was unclear, but d-tryptophan caused bleaching of leaves, indicating pigment synthesis of the grass was inhibited. The results highlighted the enantioselective and synergistic toxicity of some amino acids, which relied upon plant species, chemical structures, and concentrations. Overall, our finding clarifies the effect of stereoisomers, and provides a chemical clue of amino acid herbicides, which may be useful in the development of herbicides from natural substances.Nanotoxicology, a discipline transpired by the need to assess the human and environmental safety of nanoscale materials, has evolved over the past 15 years into a mature area of toxicology [...].Idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) is a distinctive interstitial pneumonia with upper lobe predominance that shows unique morphological features among idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs). Affected patients have a variety of clinical presentations with heterogeneous clinical courses. Cluster analysis is a valuable tool for identifying distinct clinical phenotypes under heterogeneous conditions. This study aimed to identify the phenotypes of patients with idiopathic PPFE. Using cluster analysis, novel PPFE phenotypes were identified among subjects from our multicenter cohort, and outcomes were stratified according to phenotypic clusters. Among the subjects with baseline data (N = 84), four clusters were identified. Cluster 1 included younger male subjects with coexisting non-UIP-like patterns. Cluster 2 included elderly female nonsmokers with low body mass index (BMI). Cluster 3 included elderly male smokers with a coexisting IP-like pattern. Cluster 4 included younger male smokers without lower lobe lesions. Patients in cluster 3 had significantly worse survival outcomes than those in clusters 1, 2, and 4 (p less then 0.001, p = 0.0041, and p = 0.0155, respectively). Among idiopathic PPFE patients, cluster analysis using baseline characteristics identified four distinct clinical phenotypes that might predict survival outcomes. This work presents the design and optimization of an antenna with defected ground structure (DGS) using characteristic mode analysis (CMA) to enhance bandwidth. This DGS is integrated with a rectangular patch with circular meandered rings (RPCMR) in a wearable format fully using textiles for wireless body area network (WBAN) application. For this integration process, both CMA and the method of moments (MoM) were applied using the same electromagnetic simulation software. This work characterizes and estimates the final shape and dimensions of the DGS using the CMA method, aimed at enhancing antenna bandwidth. The optimization of the dimensions and shape of the DGS is simplified, as the influence of the substrates and excitation is first excluded. This optimizes the required time and resources in the design process, in contrast to the conventional optimization approaches made using full wave "trial and error" simulations on a complete antenna structure. To validate the performance of the antenna on the body, the specific absorption rate is studied. Simulated and measured results indicate that the proposed antenna meets the requirements of wideband on-body operation. This work presents new material for solid-contact layers-hydrous iridium dioxide IrO2·2H2O, characterized by high electrical capacitance value, evaluated using chronopotentiometry (1.22 mF) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (1.57 mF). The remarkable electrical parameters of layers resulted in great analytical parameters of IrO2·2H2O-contacted potassium-selective electrodes. Various parameters of ion-selective electrodes were examined in the scope of this work using a potentiometry method including linear range, repeatability, stability of potentiometric response and sensitivity to varying measurement conditions. The analytical parameters obtained for solid-contact electrodes were compared with the ones obtained for coated disc electrodes to evaluate the influence of the iridium dioxide layer. The linear range of the IrO2·2H2O-contacted K+-selective electrodes covered concentrations of K+ ions from 10-6 to 10-1 M and the potential stability was estimated at 0.097 mV/h. The IrO2·2H2O-contacted electrodes turned out to be insensitive to varying light exposure and changes in the pH values of measured solutions (in the pH range of 2 to 10.5). A water layer test proved that, contrary to the coated disc electrode, the substantial water film is not formed between the ion-selective membrane and iridium dioxide layer. We prepared electrically conductive polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites by incorporating non-covalently surface-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with hydrophilic polymers such as polydopamine (PDA) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOTPSS). Further, ethylene glycol (EG) was introduced as a second dopant to improve the electrical properties of the nanocomposites prepared with PEDOTPSS-wrapped CNTs. All conductive PS nanocomposites were prepared through latex-based process, and the morphology and properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. The electrical properties of the nanocomposites with PEDOTPSS-wrapped CNTs were better than those of the nanocomposites with PDA-coated CNTs owing to the conducting nature of PEDOTPSS, although the dispersions of both types of modified CNTs in the PS matrix were excellent, as evidenced by morphology and rheology. In the case of PEDOTPSS modification, the electrical properties of the nanocomposites with EG-doped PEDOTPSS-wrapped CNTs were superior to those of the nanocomposites without EG treatment.NifS and NifU (encoded by nifS and nifU) are generally dedicated to biogenesis of the nitrogenase Fe-S cluster in diazotrophs. However, nifS and nifU are not found in N2-fixing Paenibacillus strains, and the mechanisms involved in Fe-S cluster biosynthesis of nitrogenase is not clear. Here, we found that the genome of Paenibacillus polymyxa WLY78 contains the complete sufCDSUB operon, a partial sufC2D2B2 operon, a nifS-like gene, two nifU-like genes (nfuA-like and yutI), and two iscS genes. Deletion and complementation studies showed that the sufC, sufD, and sufB genes of the sufCDSUB operon, and nifS-like and yutI genes were involved in the Fe-S cluster biosynthesis of nitrogenase. Heterologous complementation studies demonstrated that the nifS-like gene of P. polymyxa WLY78 is interchangeable with Klebsiella oxytoca nifS, but P. polymyxa WLY78 SufCDB cannot be functionally replaced by K. oxytoca NifU. In addition, K. oxytoca nifU and Escherichia coli nfuA are able to complement the P. polymyxa WLY78 yutI mutant. Our findings thus indicate that the NifS-like and SufCDB proteins are the specific sulfur donor and the molecular scaffold, respectively, for the Fe-S cluster formation of nitrogenase in P. polymyxa WLY78. YutI can be an Fe-S cluster carrier involved in nitrogenase maturation in P. polymyxa WLY78.The detailed characteristics of strokes at high altitudes in diverse nations have not been extensively studied. We retrospectively enrolled 892 cases of first-ever acute ischemic strokes at altitudes of 20, 2550, and 4200 m in China (697 cases from Penglai, 122 cases from Huzhu, and 73 cases from Yushu). Clinical data and brain images were analyzed. Ischemic strokes at high altitudes were characterized by younger ages (69.14 ± 11.10 vs. 64.44 ± 11.50 vs. 64.45 ± 14.03, p less then 0.001) and larger infract volumes (8436.37 ± 29,615.07 mm3 vs. 17,213.16 ± 47,044.74 mm3 vs. 42,459 ± 84,529.83 mm3, p less then 0.001). The atherosclerotic factors at high altitude, including diabetes mellitus (28.8% vs. 17.2% vs. 9.6%, p less then 0.001), coronary heart disease (14.3% vs. 1.6% vs. 4.1%, p less then 0.001), and hyperlipidemia (20.2% vs. 17.2% vs. 8.2%, p = 0.031), were significantly fewer than those in plain areas. Polycythemia and hemoglobin levels (138.22 ± 18.04 g/L vs. 172.87 ± 31.57 g/L vs. 171.81 ± 29.55 g/L, p less then 0.001), diastolic pressure (89.98 ± 12.99 mmHg vs. 93.07 ± 17.79 mmHg vs. 95.44 ± 17.86 mmHg, p = 0.016), the percentage of hyperhomocysteinemia (13.6% in Penglai vs. 41.8% in Huzhu, p less then 0.001), and the percentage of smoking (33.1% in Penglai vs. Selleck Ricolinostat 50.0% in Huzhu, p = 0.023) were significantly elevated at high altitudes. We concluded that ischemic stroke occurred earlier and more severely in the Chinese plateau. While the atherosclerotic factors were not prominent, the primary prevention of strokes at high altitudes should emphasize anticoagulation, reducing diastolic pressure, adopting a healthy diet, and smoking cessation.(1) Background The aim of the present study was to compare oxygen gradient ektacytometry parameters between sickle cell patients of different genotypes (SS, SC, and S/β+) or under different treatments (hydroxyurea or chronic red blood cell exchange). (2) Methods Oxygen gradient ektacytometry was performed in 167 adults and children at steady state. In addition, five SS patients had oxygenscan measurements at steady state and during an acute complication requiring hospitalization. (3) Results Red blood cell (RBC) deformability upon deoxygenation (EImin) and in normoxia (EImax) was increased, and the susceptibility of RBC to sickle upon deoxygenation was decreased in SC patients when compared to untreated SS patients older than 5 years old. SS patients under chronic red blood cell exchange had higher EImin and EImax and lower susceptibility of RBC to sickle upon deoxygenation compared to untreated SS patients, SS patients younger than 5 years old, and hydroxyurea-treated SS and SC patients. The susceptibility of RBC to sickle upon deoxygenation was increased in the five SS patients during acute complication compared to steady state, although the difference between steady state and acute complication was variable from one patient to another. (4) Conclusions The present study demonstrates that oxygen gradient ektacytometry parameters are affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) genotype and treatment.
