Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic, irreversible disease and a leading cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. In Canada, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death. This systematic review was undertaken to update healthcare professionals and decision makers regarding the recent clinical, humanistic and economic burden evidence in Canada.

A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases to identify original research published January 2000 through December 2012 on the burden of COPD in Canada. Each search was conducted using controlled vocabulary and key words, with "COPD" as the main search concept and limited to Canadian studies, written in English and involving human subjects. Selected studies included randomized controlled trials, observational studies and systematic reviews/meta-analyses that reported healthcare resource utilization, quality of life and/or healthcare costs.

Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a costly global disease that burdens farmers with yield loss and high fungicide expenses. We extracted small RNA from rust-infected wheat flag leaves and performed high-throughput sequencing. Two wheat cultivars were analyzed one is susceptible; the other displays partial high-temperature adult plant resistance. Fungal-specific reads were identified by mappte interaction. We conclude that small RNAs are likely to play a role in regulating the complex developmental processes involved in stripe rust pathogenicity.

Poor diet quality in childhood and adolescence is associated with adverse health outcomes throughout life, yet the dietary habits of American children and how they change across childhood and adolescence are unknown.

This study sought to describe diet quality among children and adolescents by assessing adherence to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) and to determine whether any differences in adherence occurred across childhood.

We employed a cross-sectional design using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Of 9,280 children aged 4 to 18 years who participated in NHANES from 2005 to 2010, those with insufficient data on dietary recall (n=852) or who were pregnant or lactating during the time of interview (n=38) were excluded from the final study sample (n=8,390).

We measured adherence to the DGA using the Healthy Eating Index 2010 (HEI-2010) and stratified participants into three age groups (4 to 8, 9 to 13, and 14 to 18 years of age). PPE used in health care is regulated as either class I (low risk) or class II (intermediate risk) devices in the United States. Many organizations have published guidelines for the use of PPE, including isolation gowns, in health care settings. In addition, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation published a guidance document on the selection of gowns and a classification standard on liquid barrier performance for both surgical and isolation gowns. However, there is currently no existing standard specific to isolation gowns that considers not only the barrier resistance but also a wide array of end user desired attributes. As a result, infection preventionists and purchasing agents face several difficulties in the selection process, and end users have limited or no information on the levels of protection provided by isolation gowns. Lack of knowledge about the performance of protective clothing used in health care became more apparent during the 2014 Ebola epidemic. Amphibians represent particularly vulnerable organisms and many populations around the world are currently at risk of extinction. However, to date, relatively few studies have explored the consequences of exposures to common non-steroidal pharmaceuticals during sensitive amphibian life-stages. To address existing knowledge gaps, tadpoles of the Australian striped-marsh frog (Limnodynastes peronii) were exposed to control water and a mixture of the common pharmaceutical contaminants diclofenac, naproxen, atenolol and gemfibrozil at 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 μg/L throughout the developmental period. Effects on detoxification pathways, energy storage, growth and development, and swimming performance were assessed following exposure. Developmental rates and liver-somatic index (LSI) were significantly reduced in the highest exposure concentration, and condition factor (K) was increased at concentrations as low as 10 μg/L. Morphological endpoints were associated with significantly altered levels of hepatic triglycerides, which in turn were correlated with increased peroxidase activity in animals exposed to the highest concentration (1000 μg/L). The mixture had no significant effect on swimming performance, but a trend of decreased swimming velocity (average and maximum) was observed with increasing concentration, and this was correlated with effects on LSI. Results demonstrate that mixtures of common non-steroidal pharmaceuticals can elicit a range of physiological, metabolic and morphological responses in larval amphibians, and more research is therefore warranted to explore possible relationships between endpoints at different levels of organization.

Patients newly treated with amiodarone between 2005 and 2009 were identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. For each case patient, the study also included 4 age- and gender-matched control subjects who did not receive amiodarone treatment.

Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that amiodarone-treated patients had a 2-fold increased neuropathy in patients treated with amiodarone, especially in males and possibly in patients with longer duration of treatment.

Binocular integrated visual fields (IVFs) using a best location method were constructed for 16 642 patients with bilateral VF loss. A significant VF defect was defined as 3 or more VF locations less than a certain sensitivity threshold, such as 20 dB. Patients were classified as having a VF defect in the inferior hemifield, superior hemifield, both hemifields, or neither hemifield. The criteria for number of locations and sensitivity threshold (in decibels) were varied across a large range of values. In addition, factor analysis was applied to the sensitivity values (in decibels) of the IVFs to determine common defect patterns in an automated fashion.

Ratio of patients with binocular VF defects in the supeis more common than inferior-only loss.
